Hey all.

Been reading CA for a little while now, though i'd add my 2 cents. I'm a Melbourne 3d artist by trade, getting into 2d more as an escape from technology than anything else.

Feel free to crit, comment... I am here to get ultimate contol of my pencil. Moo hoo ha ha ha ha (evil laugh)

There's scatterings of Loomis, bridgeman, hogarth etc... any book I can get my hands on. There's scratchings from life, and imagination too...

not real happy with any of these... I've been doing too much anatomy studies from other artists and not putting them into my own practical application. I'll try and do some more original stuff over the week.

Man... i'm really having trouble getting results that I'm happy with using the wacom.

I find that the strokes that I do slowly come through real shakey, and the strokes that I do a little faster aren't as accurate. I'm guessing that will all come out with practise.

Envisor: Hey thanks fro dropping by. I've been doing anatomy studies, but not really posting them. Been focusing on torso, pelvis and legs. Should get onto arms soon.

Jim Kalogiratos: Hey Jim! What happened to your sketch book? there haven't been updates in ages!

Notorious K.A.B: Thanks for the advice. I'm a bit like you I think... jumping from anatomy, to faces, to concept, to life... This is going to be a long journey.

Bumskee: Hey Bum. Of course I miss you you damn emo! How was the Sydney workshop?


Here's some anatomy studies; mostly of legs. Went down to the skate park to get out of the house yesterday. There's a quick page of stuff from down there.

Conference was awsome.. something to remember for life definitely. The workshop was really relaxing and casual. David Kassan was so casual and an awsome teacher.. I think we did so many stupid silly things as much as drawing and painting. heheh. Awsome!

You going sketching today mate?

it's funny how things look better in colour even tho it should be same as a pencil. these look good, just ermm make sure you try and copy them as close as possible! it will be a good "observation" skill too. also watch the calf muscle, they don't quite split right in the middle.

As for quick sketches.. try capturing the silhouette and then work your way towards detail of you get time. I notice you are starting from top and that tends to stretch the bottom details. (having said this, I suffer from this too..)

Min: You'll have to post some of the stuff you did at the workshop.

I'll be heading out with Jim later today... not sure if anyone else will rock up though with it being Easter Sunday... and it's actually damn cold today too.

I'll keep that in mind about the silhouettes. Thanx. Will post the days sketches later tonight. i've got this bad habit of starting with the heads and then moving on.... and then noticing later that the head are way too small. Hopefully this silhouette tech will help.

I've been checking the DSG.. and doodling ideas, but nothing polished yet. Once I've done my anatomy studies I'll have some fun with that I hope.

yeah I know I do that all the time.. stretching the crap out of people.. I think I am going to do the same and do more on working with the overall shape of things rather than just work from top down.

I am also kinda puzzled with values more these days.. heh, I think the key is to see things in planes.. bridgman is kinda good for that I think, he simplifies a lot and shows things in simple forms.

also keep clothing and folds separate. I remember someone saying a simple approach to clothing and folds is to make them quite tight. then u only have to worry about where the tension is on them. I think it's a great advice.

Thanks min.... I'll give breaking down values into planes a try on the next sketches. I'll give clothing a miss right now I think, and focus on anatomy and nude models.


I used to love clothing and doing the folds without lifting the pen.. and I was afraid of the naked body, now it's the other way around. i'll put clothing on the list too.

Thanks again. When are you moving back to Sydney? we'll all have to do a road trip to come visit you... wait a minute... you can come visit us you lazy bum.

they have got to be the most interesting thing I've studied fo far.... next week: arms and hands.

I find i jump way too fast into detail... so I'm keeping my lines quick and no grey value. I need to work on proportion while I'm at it.

I had a bad day sketching in the city today with Jim.... thought I needed to try something different. There's been an itch to draw faces lately, so here's the result of 1 hour. The proportion is a little off though.

Your anatomy studies are in a good way! I like the page with the foot studies!

Nice studies going on here. One major mistake I can notice is the placement of the eyes when you're drawing heads and faces. They are to close to the nose and to each other in your drawings. Remember that the eyes are one eye lenght apart from each other and the avarage nose is also one eye lenght wide. So to place the eye correctly in a front view you have to draw a line from the end of the nostril parallel to the centerline of the nose to the eyeline. There's where te eyes starts. I hope you can understand and see what I mean. Just look carefully at the placement of your eyes in a mirror and it will be clear I think. Now keep posting!
