    Portrait Sculpture - Old Man

Hello Everyone, I'm Brad, and I'm Brand new to the forum. I have been working on my first sculpture, a portrait of an old man... just taking my time, working and reworking trying to observe form and anatomy, and get used to tools and materials.

Nice beginning... the face seems to be smaller than the actual, though. I look forward to seeing your progress!

Hey, not bad... It seems like your trying to make it more even over the whole face, I'd prefer to keep it uneven/non-symmetrical, however you want to say it, like it is in the photo. That's really just artistic license though, but I think it would help to give the character that the photo has. It's looking good though and if there's one thing I've learned thus far from my sculpting, it's texture! An old wrinkly face like that has some great texture that you need to represent.

    Good job and keep going!
    Crappy stuff by me!
Please check it out and drop advice, tell me what I'm doing wrong, and suggest things to learn!!!

Thanks guys, yeah I have been noticing thats it pretty symmetrical, I think what makes the sculpture look smaller too, is I need to pull the cheeks in more and narrow the jaw a little, that should make the face a little longer, and I want to really loosen up and break up the symmetry, you are absolutely right about that, he has a little bit of Abraham Lincoln face going on, higher tight right side, and relaxed cheek muscles on the left that soften up those forms a little.

In regards to the texture, I think I would really like to follow the planes of the face with a small tool, and really give it almost a line drawing quality, not sure yet, I'll play around a little... I agree with you Marked, I prefer surface texture over smooth surfaces for sure... it's like getting lost in a paintings brush strokes.

Also, Ive noticed that I don't like the way the sculpture looks in photos as much as I do in life... anyone feel like that?

Any good focals legths or photo tricks to get decent photos of your work?
