Something a bit different this week: a character from a book:
Iorek Byrnison

Iorek Byrnison is the exiled king of the Panserbjørne (armoured bears). He forged his own armour from sky iron. His armour is his soul.
Like all Panserbjørne, Iorek follows a very strict code of contract, and will in no situation betray a promise he has made. He possesses incredible strength, and like many of his kind is an expert smith.

Ok I have had a look at all the entries which are all fantastic.
The only ones I would say should not make the poll are steampunk,inkfish and makerman.

Although i thought all of these entries had a good feel to them they seemed some what unresolved.

And my final. I went for a little more conventional inspiration; classic plate armor wth the occasional nod to a samurai's yoroi. I considered an underlying suit of chain mail, but I figured it would be highly uncomfortable, constantly getting one's fur caught and pulled out in the links. Instead, I'm going to go with a series of gliding plates bolted to a soft leather backing. I also wanted to make something more suited to quadrupedal movement, but which would allow the character to rear up on his hind legs when necessary.

All in all, not exactly to the level of refinement I would like, especially after a healthy dose of second-guessing by my wife, whose read the books and understands the character much better than I did. Regardless, I'm pleased overall with where I've gotten to these past six days, and I look forward to perfecting my craft on these projects in the future.

I'm new here and still finding my feet, but I'll do my best to get an entry together that doesn't make me feel too inadequate.

Update - finally had time to make a start. Critique welcome, I don't bite.

Update2 - final updated. I was going to put Lyra on his back and clean everything up, but I have a lot to do before Monday.
I've enjoyed this a lot though, will definitely enter these as much as I can from now on.

Well, I will give this a try. This is my first attempt at this so I hope I do OK. Anyways, here is my WIP. Enjoy

UPDATED: Now in INKS! Now...to color or not to color...that is the question. I am always cautious when it comes to color...it is VERY dangerous!


Here is my final. I don't have time to finish the colors I am working on so this will have to be it. Added more fur shading and the flattest background EVER! I enjoyed doing this though, I think I will do more...make some good portfolio pieces!

Alighty here we go... First off thanks, Caekypigdog for clearing that up, I was reading the wiki stuff and was still a bit lost, alot of intricate concepts to grasp. Also... <slaps forehead> sky armour is rust red? noooo, at least I'm not to far in.

I made my Iorek alot more humanoid than what seems to be in most stuff I see, but Im pretty much running with it, see how it will pan out.

Okay, a bit further along, I changes his armour up a bit, I was originally gonna do a pretty traditional breastplate but then thought waht the hell, the setting allows for play so I went with something a touch more modern for him, also adding a helmet atm.
One other thing, Im thinking of making his scale coat thingy a similar red, as shown, anyone think it might be too much red? I think it borders on too much but also ties it together more than just plain metal.


Ok, final done, and Im not cutting super fine like normal! whooo! I tried a new technique for the mail coat so reasonably happy but could take a bit of perfecting before I decently grasp it. anyways.

Here's my stab at the topic, went with the Steampunk theme suggested above. Made Iorek pretty humanoid, seeing how running on all fours would be a challenge with machine gun for a hand. Didn't do any color because, frankly, im scared of it. I'm mainly looking for any and all critisism, I want to get better

SO heres my pose, still not very refined. WIll try to use acrylics here. I am stil new to the medium but I am loving it.

Wip I really wanted to make this one look good. Ahh I really dont feel like working more on it. But I might doplay around with it tonight.

I had a terrible time trying to decide on a design for the armor. I've read the book, and the first time we see the armor it's described as crudely riveted together, dented, and rusty. I didn't really want to paint just a bunch of pieces of metal jammed together, because that would look crappy, and probably look like laziness. However, I did stick with "rusty and dented."

Also, normal polar bears look cute and goofy. There is no getting around this. So I freely admit that to make my design for Iorek a bit more intimidating, I borrowed heavily from grizzly bears.

Here's my version of the panserbj&#248;rn. I havn't read the books but fortunately my girlfriend have so she gave me alot of useful art direction. The girl is Lyra Belaqua the protagonist and the little rodent is called Pantalaimon, her so-called 'Daimon'.



Nice to see so many awesome interpretations, looks like you had as much fun with the concept as I did.

I made-a my polar bar blue, because I've always wanted to see a blue polar bar. I wasn't too sure exactly what 'sky iron' is, but I thought it would be neat if it reflected the sky and make plumes of clouds as decoration. Not too sure how well I pulled that off, my coloring still needs a lot of work I think. Crits are always welcome

There's a lot of good entires in this one, I particularly like Chuck Wadey's final and artdwx's as well, though everyone always does such a good job!

So it's been awhile since I've participated - I've been busy with school and such.
Anyways, I haven't read the books or anything so I might be way off. And after doing this, I think the armor should be more ornate. Oh well... that's the critique of myself. Attempt 1

Ok, so in the spirit of improvement, I have returned to this image and did a bit more research. So here it is. Hopefully it looks a bit more regal now. Then again, perhaps it's a bit too simplified now. ....hmm... meh...
