Max: Hey dude, good to see you around. The castle is actually not finished, which is why it lacks more tonal work It seemed to work okay when I scanned it though, and since I didn't have more time for it I left it like that.

Another bunch of doodlings and blah. Trying to work on the current Thunderdome a bit: 'Loss of Innoncence', and some other stuff. I need to finish stuff...

Joey-b: Thanks for stopping by dude. You're right about the falling backwards thing, it started out as intentionally tilting the horizon a bit but I have some difficulty pulling it off

    hunchback: Thanks!

Small update on my Chow entry. Chipping away at it since I need more practice with characters. I might post a step-by-step thingy for myself a little later on, since I saved most of the progress.

nice last sketch man.. i hope you finish it. I think you're wasting a lot of values around the corners though... you could use those to put more emphasis on the focal points.. to make the composition stronger..!

keep it up man.. inspirational works

So here's the finished black 'n white version of my chow entry, though I might work on some details before I go into slapping some colour on it.

So yeah, final.. Ran out of time for the colors since I spent too much time on rendering the B&W version, it would've cost me another day to fix the colors the way it was going. Not all that exited with the result, I should've planned it out better. Oh well, there's always the next round.

    Kingkostas: Will do

So, since I'm finally finished with a huge project that took away all my drawing time for almost half a year, I can finally draw a lot more again. Brain is fizzing and sparking at the moment, in fact.

Decided to jump in on the current CHOW/IDW collab: the witch Baba Yaga flying in her mortar while steering with a pestle, and her hut on chickenlegs. Took the Russian way with it, because after I did some research on old Russian wooden architecture I got very inspired. Anyway, here's a first sketch for her hut and her mortar. I think I'm going with one of the lower right ones.

And another update. I'm on drawing crack for the moment it seems, but since I need to work on stuff for my portfolio that suits me so far

Baba Yaga herself. Very sketchy yet, but I needed an idea of what she would look like so I can keep it in mind when finishing the design of the hut and mortar.

the house with the chicken legs is awesome! the ferry seems a little off, though, even if she is leaning on something. it may have something to do with how her leg is situated.

great sketchbook, though. really like your lines in the sketches.

Lexxx: Thanks Yeh the faerie is not one of my best pieces. Don't think I'll ever color it, the pose has been bugging me from the start.

TheGnoll: Thanks man, finishing the Baba Yaga as we speak (though probably not in time for the deadline...).

Anyway, I did lots of sketching and painting over the past few days as I've got way too much time on my hands all of a sudden. Then again, trying to pull off two finished renders for IDW and ChOW proved to be a bit too much maybe I'll work some more on it after the deadlines though, as I think it would sit well in my portfolio.

There's a curious morbidity to your Baba Yaga character and house design. I can't place what about but what I do know about is that its instantly likeable and tickles the senses in a vulgar way (I know, must be just me getting tickled)

The real blair witch project of the Siberian farmlands. A few attempted crits on the industrial design:

    - I could imagine the "house with chicken legs" being in an assortment of environments from jungles to deserts, Moroccan markets to New York City. You could actually even expand this to something of that sort because it has a lot of potential for expansion past CA activities.
    - I see one vine dripping from the lower wooden deck supporting the house on the left. There could be more drooping vegetation and random growth like that all around the wooden median.
    - The skull decor/ornament atop the second highest ledge of the house isn't really necessary for me. You already have an ornamental eye catcher at the very top so you might not need the other one. When I think about it more, it does add balance to the structure but I'm curious to see what it'd look like without it. Maybe more decor is better because I'd doubt this lady pays attention to exterior design balance.

Those eye windows are also great. You did your thing on this, yoit.

    Keep doing you

Vulgar: Thanks man! Yeh the morbidity is totally on purpose, but glad to hear I pulled it off in a not too blatant way. In my mind, Baba Yaga isn't so much good or bad, more a force of nature and mother figure for the East (Russia mostly). As for the house, I deliberately introduced some Russian elements in it to make it fit with that culture. The vine is supposed to be the spot where she enters dead bodies into her oven to burn them to ash, and the remaining bones she pounds to dust in her mortar You're right about the skull, I think I'll replace it with something else. Wish I'd had more time as I planned on adding all sorts of details yet. For portfolio purposes I think I will though.

Anyway, here's an update on Baba Yaga herself. I don't really call it totally done, but since I had a ChOW deadline to meet this is going to be it for now.

Max: Hey dude, how's NZ at this time of the year? Thanks for stopping by

So, I joined CGHub.com a couple of days ago, and since CA doesn't compete in the Dominance War challenge I figured I might as well represent them. Here's what I'm working on for the firts minichallenge, a War General Portrait. Haven't planned anything out, so I'm just making it up on the fly at the moment

    Name: general6 flip small.jpg
Views: 1417
Size: 251.0 KB

Edit: Worked some more on it, starts to feel like an overheavy polished turd but meh, don't feel like starting over. There's still things to learn from finishing it Still need to add the general-ish bits though...

Awesome job on the babayaga my friend!

I'm not sure about the war general portrait so far, there is nothing distinctive about him :/. His expression is dead, and his design is very minion like.

    Keep it up.

Muzzoid: Thanks for the crit, I tried to give him a more interesting expression then just the tight lipped stare Mind you, portraits tend to be a bit frozen, especially the old photographed ones where they had to wait for 5 seconds for the picture to develop. I used old American Civil war pictures as inspiration. Also, since the process I used here basically consists of painting and designing on the go, I left out the details like decorations and stuff until last, just focussing on the basic shapes still.

Last update for today (it's already morning here..). Slapped on some texture to see where that took me, but still I need to push the colors back a bit since the texture changed the original. Starting to be a bit happier with the whole thing though

More spam and blah, I should try and post them all in one go once a week or so I guess. Although, it's not called sketchbook for nothing

Two hour session of car sketching from pictures in class this morning, had fun with them. The focus is more on trying to capture the spirit and character of the cars than to get the perspective completely right, so there's some mess-ups here and there. All of them are originally on A3 format.

    Awesome cars dude! Great sketches.

I prefer the second last sketch from your general painting, the last one has to much contrast, to strong highlights imo.
