Really like the traditional stuff you've done, especially the pencils, and that hydra is awesome as are the other creatures.

You're doing well so far with the digital painting, the first one especially has some real nice variaty in the colours.

As for crits, I'm going to stick with the most recent portrait. The two main points I'd mention are to pay attention to the planes of the face and not to be afraid of pushing the values of the painting.

The shadowed part of the face is very close in value to the darker area of the lit side, which makes it pop out and flatten the face somewhat. Same with the side of the breast, the lack of deep shadows flattens things out.

The planes of the nose and front of the chin are two areas in particular which need some attention when painting them. Although you might think they're rounded, the nose usually has a fairly solid plane on the top and the chin one on the bottom angled downwards slightly.

I've done a quick paintover to show you what I mean. I've upped the contrast of the face and deepend the shadow on the left side. I probably would have upped the lightness of the top of the cheek and the shoulder too if I'd been doing it. I didn't make any changes to anatomy or anything though, those seem to be pretty much spot on. The lips in particular were impressive, I always have trouble with those myself.

Damn, I just realised, I was doing a painting from this very ref before my hard disk went down. I think you've nailed the proportions much better than I did though

Big-Dave: Thank you for the crit, I'll keep the nose plan in mind next time I do another portrait. And thank you for the paint over, helps a lot.

Here's a WIP for the teen challenge going on right now, the topic is: Alien mount and rider.

Finally an update, just for you Oki!

Some anatomy studies, I need to do more of those.
And some gas mask for flies, since it's a buggy bug world out there. And lastly a portrait study, I need to work on my facial structure as well.

Yay new artz =]. For the last portrait I was thinking you should use a few more bright colors to kind of bring more life to the skin.

Oki: Yeah, I'll add more highlights into the next portrait I do,the colors there are kind of dull.

Yikes, how did I miss all these updates? Nice work with the anatomy sketches, always good to practice the basics. Especially like the one with the sheet on it, you've done a great job giving the impression of the sheet wrapping around her.

On the portrait, I'd say the nose needs tweaked again a bit, since it throws the face off a bit. The better light nostril seems like it should be a bit broader when compared with the darker one. Also the bit at the tip of the nose where there's a sudden dark patch around the top, I think that might be a bit over done. Might be better to use a lighter patch at the edge rather than a darker patch. The chin lighting is a bit distorted too, it seems like the shadows angle down where they should be level, which makes it look like the jaw does too.

That said, the hair looks pretty good, and again you've managed to pretty much nail the anatomy of the piece. The nose especially is impressive, since you've manage to do it well at this angle, which isn't easily done.

Lastly, really like the atmosphere you've got going in th boat painting, looking forward to seeing how that one turns out

Oki: Thanks, I like him too.
jdeegz: Thanks Jim, yeah I should head back and try to finish some of my work. I never finish anything =/

Here's a very small update, I have more but sadly my old ass camera uses 4 batteries just to function. And the batteries don't last long......=/

I have an oil painting that I'm working on, it's almost done! Will update later. And another life drawing from class it was a 2 hour pose, I believe.

Awesome update I like that last figure drawing, the perspective on whatever it is she's sitting on seems a little off but its not anything big.
