Oookay, I've been gone too long. Yes. Now I'm back. It's summer, etc., etc.. Expect more. Definitely. I'm just going to give you guys a few for now.
These are from a series I put together amongst other works for a drawing competition at school. I didn't win but apparently sophomores never do. I was disappointed to find out that one of the winners' works included a piece of paper which he pressed his cat against and traced. I'm pretty sure the politics of who's older than whom play a pretty big role in the judging, like they want to give seniors a chance to win before they graduate or something? Whatever.

Hey man. I'm glad your posting again. I was afraid you had lost steam.
I think many art competitions/schools, especially in the "fine arts" category, discourage good drawing skills because the teachers and judges don't understand how to draw. They encourage the stranger things because they fear competition.
That's my little soap box anyway.

I like those new studies! A bit too soft or hard depending on each. I'd like to see more of each in those things. The new enviro is really cool too. I like all the lines. It lacks a sense of depth tho. There aren't really any layers to it. Pushing the values and adding more elements might help build some atmosphere to help it. Keep it coming!

This is all I have today, I spent like 4-5 hours trying to vectorize one of my drawings incredibly tediously for a freelance gig. It's a struggle, doing what I want vs. doing what I can when I get the chance to make money. Freelance stuff doesn't stop by all the time, so I feel like I need to jump when I get the chance. I feel like i have no choice because I have limited funds as it is...another thing I realize is that judging by my work, it's almost impossible to tell what I actually want to do. That kind of sickens me. How can I expect to get the jobs I want if I never show I can do them?
That's a problem I'll address very soon.
More thoughts later, need sleep for the joe job interview tomorrow...whee...

second--your colors in the pepper still life are awesome--you're doing a good job of giving the highlights color and not just light (does that make sense? o.o)

love that series you did for the contest. it would be cool to see you expand on that!

good luck with the interview! Don't feel too bad about the freelancing thing. Once you start to put together work that you want to show and be paid to do, your work is going to find strength that makes this frustration now, very worth it. Good luck

Even though the Wacom is messing you up it's still a beautiful study! Ha! I love the subtle texture you're indicated in there. I'm still not that great at communicating it digitally but you do a fantastic job of it.

Getting back to my last crit... sometimes it's really helpful to try and break an image down into layers. Think of the foreground, middle ground and background. And try to push and pull all of those elements to create a forced sense of depth. It also helps you develop the composition more as well. Try to keep those things in mind when doing these and create shapes and values that will keep the eye in the painting. Keep up the great work, my friend. Much love for you too! Ha! OH! And I think I know who that is in those pencil sketches... lol

Armando: Lol. You think he's too unrealistic to study? What I like about him is that he breaks things down in ways that make sense to me. With his renderings there's no doubt what you're looking at, and you can see how things weave and wrap around the bones, I feel like I just need clarity for my memory's sake sometimes, from there I can get specific about shape and whatnot through the use of other sources if I want. What about him don't you like?

I wanted to do this, and I did it. I'm proud of myself. Just messing around with tones. I think I should research edges a lot more.

Here are some recent things. I'm painting every day. I think that's my requirement for myself, I can't avoid paint any longer. So there's the pen drawing and the value/landscape creations. I just want to try and set a mood but I kinda think they're all failures in their own right. I'm not getting my colors to sing like I've seen other people like tiemens accomplish with their colors. Gotta work on that. I think painting with watercolors or gouache is something I'll be able to benefit from forever so I'm going to keep trying these small scale paintings to practice with. I've got some other sketches but I wasn't excited about scanning them, so I'll just show more later.

I wanted to drop by and tell you that you're an inspiration to me. I miss your daily self portraits, but it seems that you've moved on from that strict schedule of self portraits, which just shows your growth.

Hey Eric, sweet watercolors as I said before . Just keep at them and they will certainly improve.

That last one is an interesting concept, but you might want to think of spicing up the pose of the girl. Right now she is a bit too rigid, I think you might want to look towards putting some curves and bends in there. For example, bend her knees back and have her hunched over a bit so that she's almost ready to spring out of the shadows, it'll give a little more tension in the scene. Think of the emotions running through her head... who is she ambushing, what are her motives. Now put yourself in her shoes... are you scared, excited, apathetic? Once you come to a conclusion, imagine yourself in that very situation, lurking in the shadows. How would you hold yourself? Get up and stand in that pose, close your eyes and just feel it out. Now open your eyes and examine yourself... how is your rib cage in relation to your pelvis, are your knees bent? How far? How are you holding your arms? How are you holding your hands? Are your muscles tensed or relaxed? Run through a checklist like this, then come back and redraw the girl... I can bet you she'll like several times better, just because now you have a real emotional connection with that character. Hope this helps, take it easy dude. This stuff is kicking ass.

Hogarth just doesn't quite know what he's doing. His form is bad his figures often look like paper cut outs. He doesnt have a grasp of space as demonstrated on his drapery book. Bad sense of mass and balance, action is choppy, doesn't understand light and shadow, doesn't understand planes, anatomy of his figures doesn't link up the pieces don't quite fit together. I think the only book of his worth a glance is his light book, but I haven't really gone through it. Why not just copy from Neal Adams or John Buscema instead? Why not Leyendecker, Michelangelo, Rockwell? The memory doesn't hold simplifications and diagrams, the memory holds significant events, stores them up like treasure. So what if with Hogarth if his drawings are easier to copy. Most of the things in the books are tautologies, with great artists and master artists you get all the obvious stuff plus the things that are never discussed in the books.
