    Red face ▣MC2's SB▣ backtobasics ~updated May 10th/2010~

Please Visit the last page...This stuff is OLD!!!!

Hello everyone...I've been frequenting Conceptart.org for at least a year now just admiring everyones art.

Now I'm finally gonna start a sketchbook thanks to my friend PaperX's persistence at trying to get me to start one

Anyway I really really want to get into the CA Atelier...hopefully this sketchbook will help me improve.

The last two are studies of ingres i did with PaperX...you can see his studies over at his sketchbook http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=83177

EDIT : moved the images to the nxt post so i can use the thread icon thingy

good stuff - keep up with the studies and draw draw draw.

a note though, and you have probably already noticed - some of the legs on the first two papers are really weird/fucked

Hey man, first off, nice stuff.
You've got a lot of strengths going. I like how you render faces, eyes, and all that stuff. The blue pencil is really working for you, I like it. You should definitely work on some anatomy studies, but the figure studies you've got are really great. Especially the ones from the most recent post, you're really doing a great job with the forms of the muscles. Keep up the good work *watches*

Some nice studies mate, good start. Keep those anatomy studies up, I think you need to get a hold of good proportions down. Especially noticed it on the punk janitor. Keep it going.

Hey, looking good. I really like the soft shading you're adding to the faces. You do a great job of defining the features. The blue pencil studies are another one of my favorite things here...really nifty. You've got a really unique style going here, keep developing your anatomy skills, it's looking good.
That's some beautiful shading on your Teen Challenge piece...so pretty. Nice cast shadow on the face and everything.
I think on your CHoW you could maybe add more darks to the piece? Or...hmm..dunno. It's obviously not in it's polished stage yet, I just think maybe having a wider spread of value in the piece could help. Keep it up! Paint away...

Exocentric :Thanks photoshop has a weird habit of making the images more saturated and darker than they actually are...so when i save it out as a jpeg it looks real washed out.

    paperX : See above post ^^ :p

Ok guys I've been working on this all day. Bring on the crits!!!!!

    cool stuff
    like that tight linework xD

to improve : simplifie forms and shapes - dont start with realism start with easy geometrie - understand proportions volumes mass orientation in space then get more n more complex
a simplyfied spehere is a cube
(there are some rules of drawing u should be aware of and keep in ur mind all the time )

    a quad = 4 angles per 360 degree
    a circle = 360 angles per 360 degrees
    got what i mean ? :>

if u look at wireframe picturs from 3d models u will see

    keep up post more !!!

Haha I'm really confused by your reply but I'll see what I can do with simplifying forms and stuff.

    "got reply give reply"

I didn't give you a reply...or are you asking me to give you a reply?

Sorry I'm just really confused right now haha

Btw I checked out your sketchbook...awesome figures...and an insane amount of them done.

damn - one can see the studies at work in the later pieces - really good stuff

As for the digital piece - I got some problems with the stale composition/P.O.V. - though it can work, especially for calm mellow characters, your octoboy feels confined. Anyway I still like

paperX : Well then vote for me . Yea need more studies. Will do some hogarth tomorrow.

The first two are just some random stuffs from my mind. Tried to make up some poses and stuff.

The third is the beginnings of a self portrait. I'm going to attempt to make this as refined as possible.

Last is just a quick sketch from a still from the movie blood diamond

Hey! I was really attracted by the portrait sketches in your first post, really nice and neat. Your anatomical studies are also interesting, as I'm learning anatomy right now. What books do you use?

Sorry guys for not updating these few days....

amer-nazri : Hey thanks...I use hogarth and bridgman....but the ones so far are from KChens thread which can be found in the tutorials and tips section on CA.

Anyways here are some stuff I did these past couple days.

Some more KChen studies...a study from characterdesigns.com.....some quick bridgman studies....and photoshop/painter sketches. The last two are supposed to be for a ut3 mod paperX and I are trying to get running. The painting ended up looking lik jason chan's stuff which wasn't my intention.

Okay dude, first off, how do you get your blue pencil studies so clean and beautiful? I really, really just love those. They're absolutely gorgeous. All of the Bridgman stuff...really great. The figure is my favorite though...something about using the blue for shading...it really comes off extremely well.
On the painting, the girl in the purple looks really nice, the tones on the face are good, although I think some of the form is confusing based on where you put the highlights. Other than that I think the skin tones are really great, especially in the shadows. So much to learn...we'll have to work all this out in some oc's. :3
I really like what you're doing so far with the pirate, design, colors, everything is really great. The striped pants are the best. It seems like her breasts strongly shaded in comparison to the shirt holding them. Haha...so either flatten them out, or add more form to the shirt. You'd probably want to go with the second option. The shading on the face is really nice, what with the rosy cheeks and everything. It's those little things that bring the piece to life. Awesome.

Those last studies are looking keen, keep them up. The values on the woman with the drapery look especially good. The painting of the Piratey girl is looking good but she seems awful long in the mid-section to crotch area. Her hips also seem dented in. Careful on those feet as well, they might end up looking rubbery and weak if you don't tweak their cruves a bit.
