JYF1987, thanks. I like your line confident gestures.

I don't care for self portrait, here's one I did. I also shaded in the monster concept, not sure about colorizing it. Any feedback would be great.

I like the double complimentary color scheme in your portrait piece - the proportions to each color mixes well, esp. the soft blue and orange.

If you want to try more intense light, OR make your monster feel a little more reflective/slimy you could put more focus on specific highlights. Also think about adding some texture ideas as you flesh him out to give it even more life. Keep a good understanding of your light direction and keep going! I see hints of secondary sources as well, which generally look great. Dont be afraid to add some slightly harder edged cast shadows on his body where applicable - this is something that adds a lot of punch as far as depth goes.

Jakers, mmm I haven't thought about wet and slimy skin. I'll give that a try and add some texture as well. The hard highlight and darker shadows sound like a good plan. Thanks


Took some advice from Jeri and worked on some comics for fun. I'll be sure to lay of the comic sans font in the future.


The Kingdom of Loki were blessed to finally have an Arch Bishop. It wasn’t too long ago Grayleaf was presented the covenant title and responsibility. It was a joyous time and illness and famine seemed to almost fade away. But as fate had it, a dark cloud was eyeing this gem among the Kingdom of Loki.

Im not a huge fan of the comic style you are working in when I can see what you can do with photo reference at the top of this page!

However that might be a specific project so don't put a lot of weight on it, just make sure you are being challenged.

Loved the head studies as well, as I forgot to say...looks like you got some accurate results from them which is great as they are so important...don't only study it on that page, really try and apply all those things to real drawings as well! thats the hard part.

Jakers: Thanks. Comic/paneling is still new grounds for me. But making accurate results and applying them to drawings would be great. Instead of the style of anime. I'll give that go.

I also added the reflective/slimy skin on to the monster painting. A bit of textures here and there.

Janos, I'll keep trying to improve on paneling and comics. I always wanted to write a story.

More drawings. Applying what I know from anatomy in the horror/zombie like drawing. Did a sketch of that Madoff scammer on the news. His ponzi scheme is considered to be one of the most devastating financial massacre of the century. 50 billion dollars from investors, retirement plans and charities all scammed away. A lot of the victims have all their life saving in jepordary and might end up being homeless now.

Monster concept updated with tattoos and highlights.

Quick gestures done from posemaniacs.com I have tons of gestures but most of them are meh. Game splash screen for Odin-ro.com ragnarok game server. The characters names are Pokky and BlessedMay. I'll stick with five fingers next time. Priest painting in progress.

Oh I forgot to mention about that comic on post #217. A girl name "Grayleaf" like the comic. So we I got married in game(just for fun, not real in life) She plays a female priest Grayleaf and my character is a Priest, BlessedMay. Here are some screenshot of our wedding.

We were wed by GM Summer and she threw a great wedding for us with magic and rainbows. Grayleaf picked a romantic spot for us to wed. A peaceful forest with snow, pretty gemstones, and gigantic dildo in the background.

The wizard in a comic is actually a disgruntled staff member on the Ragnarok Game on the server I play time to time. That "wizard" has been since demoted for laundering virtual and real money from players and server. Fortunately that person is no longer in the position to suddenly make player's account "disappear" for questioning their authority or lack of in game ethics.

All in all, I got inspired to make those loose political cartoons for the server...and someone what of inside joke.

Janos, haha thanks. She lives in Europe and I live in the Usa time zone, and she had wake up 5:00am to meet up.

Right now I'm going through draw a lot of anime phrase(It's like eating candy for me), but getting back into traditional as well. I used a handy plaster mask as great lightening reference, for the priest painting.

I agree, I just added more contrast to the priest. I'll continue to paint. Thanks

Hey man, your potrait with that skeletton horse look really great! Normally I am not into too colorfull stuff, but that looks cool and freaky at the same time!
Maybe just toning down the blue a bit? Otherwise really good.

Love the Cthulu magician. Very original and funny. The unicorn is really a lot of cuteness to handle, and the horn looks a little to far down but it is very clean and nice and fits perfectly for an anime image. If thats what you feel like doing, hell I totally back you up.

that priest needs moar shadow behind him also.
get a hold of a spotlight or something, and make yourself cast a shadow onto a wall, and note what happens when you move further to the light, closer to the wall and so on.

Janos, Thanks to be honest I'm still that satisfied with it. I gave it another go, I think need more practice with animals in general.
AimBiZ, He isnt' wearing glasses, But that would be fun to add. I never played D&D, however I enjoy a lot of the fantasy theme monsters they have.
Timmi-o-Tool, Thank you I'll keep drawing.
Flaskpost, Okay. I just posted some sketches from life drawing class. I think the model's name is Bob and some other quick skeleton studies. That's a good idea to try out the lightening and study the cast shadow. I just updated the Priest painting and I'll be sure to apply what I see in the nice polishing stage.

Haven't been here for awhile. Lots of new stuff!... Even game weddings, haha.

I'm gonna give you some advice on the cartoon drawings.
Now, I don't know what sort of art background you come from, so no offense if you already know what I'm gonna say or disagree with it.

From what I can see, you started studying from life (like a good artist should), and now you're moving onto some stylized works. Am I correct?

This is where the problem rears it's ugly head. I think you're getting caught up between simplifying/stylizing things and the more 'academic' practice that you've had.
I have this problem, and I know others who do too.

What I've found is that 'academic' drawing has limited ties to 'stylized' drawing. Being awesome at drawing from life is not going to make you awesome at drawing cartoons, it requires a different set of skills and mode of thinking.

I've found that when drawing cartoons, you need to let go of a lot of things you've learned about drawing.
I think drawing cartoons is more like graphic design than anything else - the character must have good composition and good flat shapes.
No matter how solid the construction of a cartoon character is, if the flat shapes don't look good, it's not gonna look good. This is where I think you're most going wrong, you're trying to everything 'make sense' and not thinking about the interaction of shapes and their design.

What it comes down to is that drawing cartoons needs dedicated practice and study just like observational drawing.

Anyway, I'm saying this with the best intentions. I would like to know what your thoughts are.

Great update...those life drawings of the guy with the beard and glasses are incredible! You have an amazing sense of weight and balance.
