Resin Kit Tutorial ,new stuff 4/1/2011

Absolutely STUNNING!!!! That looks fantastic dude. Great sculpt and interesting casting methods. Awsome how it all fits together like that. Whats a roto casting mean? Is it like the gamesworkshop kinda casting, with a spinning centrafugal machine?

I love the weight you have sculpted in the creaures skin on the legs. Has a sort of realistic tortoisy-ness to them. Awsome detail in all of it mind, but the legs stand out as highlight.

Were all the moulds for this done in 2 part silicon rubber? Or did you paint the rubber onto them making a jacket mould?
Cant wait to see your tutorial.

hey bat fink ,
I don't have a roto cast machine which is exactly what you mentioned , all roto casting is . is taking a mold and placing it in the center of two axis one going vertical and the other horizontal . all at the same time, it spreads your resin around equally until it sets . it makes bubble free very thin castings . ans on this piece made it sell-able .
thanks for your comments about the merchant , the legs believe it or not were very challenging making them realistic like you could actually see one walking like that .

Hey Kent, thought as a sculptor, you might enjoy this! .... its basically porn for sculptors! Fantastic work, and at the end it shows how theyre made, so i recomend watching the whole thing. However its 30 mins long, so watch it when your not busy.

Also, completely diffrent topic, have you ever made a mask from silicon? I was thinking of making a Batman mask for a fan film, i wondered if it could be coloured black? and if not this casting silicon, do you have any other sugestions? I have tried liquid latex in the past, but found that it is very thin and flexible, and i dont have access to foam latex.

hey bat fink I will check it out . as for life casting I did some years ago we used an alginate material , My knowledge of lifecasting and doing latex masks is probably very antiquated . I would bet there are better methods then I could show, things have changed since 1990, sounds like a fun project though. good luck with that ..

Hey bat , great job, The only true test of a mold quality is in its castings and those look great . congrats, Love the pudgy spidey by the way.
Thanks sleep , I would be honored if they would , the idea of all this effort vanishing into the black hole freaks me out a little. But truthfully this thread is getting old im surprised its still hanging around , thanks for posting always a small reprieve from death.
I am currently working on a recardo mantlaban figure , as star treks khan . its still a ways from bieng finished but here it goes.

Great Kahn sculpt Kent, Bet he's a devil with the ladies, hehehe (re pole) cheap gag.

Did you get comissioned to sculpt him? or is it a personal project? I want to get into sculpting kits for films such as Batman and Judge dredd etc... any clues as to who to approach with the idea? Also, have you ever had one of your sculpts/moulds sent away for mass production? ie, someone else casting from your moulds etc?

Anyways, cool Kahn, be good to see more photos of your casting/moulding processes.

Iv just finished a sculpt of a Zombie bust, ready for moulding. Then in my spare time i wanna sculpt a Judge Dredd figure.

Thanks very much charmilla ,Inspiring is a great compliment I appreciate that very much > I find so many artists in this forum inspiring. HI bat fink , the khan is for kitbuilders mag, as for other work I am very new to that industry so its all new to me . from what I have gathered , doing a piece and posting it in the forums Like the clubhouse , AFM magazine forum Etc , is what I did and it has been great . I think the companies review your work but also the publics opinion of your work and that will probably be the determining factor about working with the pros. to answer your mold question < I have before made the molds and sent off but on the head merchant piece I had to send the piece away for moldwork due to my choice to go roto cast on the parts .I will be doing more moldwork soon <I will input once I get that started . Thanks again bat you are always way cool to me . Mr D, Im pleased you like , post your sculps in here once you get something started .

I have a few things to say about it, (but you should notice that i don't know this character)

Well, seems a bit short, legs maybe or the head is a little big, maybe both

Anyway, as always the work is great, strong attitude and wise.

I can honestly say this piece has given me more trouble then any other in a long time.

Wow! I think this is a great Khan. It looks like you pushed the features of the face and muscle mass just a bit further than the actor but that's just as it should be. It makes for a better sculpture.

For example, if someone sculpts Superman to look "exactly" like Christopher Reeve, it doesn't quite look right. The features need to be exaggerated a tiny bit, like your Khan sculpture.

I hope you understand what I'm getting at. You did a fantastic job!

Im doing a few various paintjob experiments so any 2 may look diffrent. Im also considering making a few resin BRONZE effect ones, yet Iv not tryed that yet. Need to save up for some bronze powder to add to the resin. Anyone tryed that before? Any tips?

Cool bust bat ,
I would skip tha bronze powder gig a long road with poor reults .these are two pieces that are cast regular resin and painted with dark brown then brushed with bronze rub. pigmented black resin is even better, same process just less paint to get coverage .
give it a shot, I have had good results . I had very poor results using bronze powder. It also weakens the resins strength. I always need to say though this has been my experience and is not at all the final word on that . take care .

I cant find any of that bronze rub here in the uk, not even on ebay. Is it some kind of paint? the closest thing im my local art store is bronze acrylic paint, or some kind of gold stuff for picture frames.

I also just changed resins, the first resin looked like it was more suited to metal powders as it dryed clear-ish, much like fiber glass resin.

This new resin is better in general and it dries like white-chocolate, and as im making shell casts and filling them with plaster this new resin G26, is great for slushing around as it dries VERY quickly but it dries sticky and gloopy.

The old resin, polyeurothane resin dryed like Jelly and slipped around in the mould without giving it a good coat, it just pooled at the bottom.

This new G26 looks like the whole metal powders isnt meant for it anyway. So i guess broze acrylic is my only option. I dont understand why so many important materials can not be bought in the UK, Klean Klay for one, its not sold here anywhere.

I will post new pics of my new ZOMBIE model shortly too so watch this space.

hey monkey , Thanks for asking the move went well , cool thing to say jake if this forum helped increase peoples interest in this shrinking art form I am happy.hidden thanks ...I am attaching some pics of a recently completed project and one in the process, the first is depicting a religious figure in the lds faith . captain moroni and the second is a take off of a world of warcraft figure whos name escapes meat the moment something about soul collecting . not my bag really but an interresting comission Im having fun with . The religious figure will be molded in a roto cast mold . This will be my first roto cast mold so I am trepidatious to show that process , it will be a box mother mold with a removable rubber core.There is very little offered by way of how to on that one so I dont want to mislead anyone if the mold goes south,but I probably will show it anyway after I know its works . silicons inc a company that supplies materials for many a roto cast users, they refuse to give me any pointers due to the secret nature of this industry

. don't get me started on this subject . Anyway I would like this process to work well so all those stupid idiots that feel that stifleing the learning process for monetary gain will hate me, as I hate them.anyway the w o w piece I will show more of as i go . for imiges of the latest pieces see page 7 . take care yall and merry Christmas.
