    Shantih's sketchybook - 24/10 update :)

Little about me - I've just turned 18 and I'm taking my A-Levels at school, I've enjoyed drawing all my life but it's only in the last few months I've started to take it seriously when I realised I really wasn't getting any better and seemed to be functioning under the belief that I'd get better without putting some work in.

I've been lurking around for a while but was too scared to post because the quality of work here is amazing, but you can't really learn anything hiding under your keyboard

    Some stuff -

    ^ Thanks.

Ack, I should have known I'd be bad at this Starting tomorrow I'm setting myself a timetable of half an hours sketching a day, so not including school work, then I'm going to try and work it up.

    Just recent stuff -

Welcome to CA. Nice life studies and paints. Keep drawing from life and draw from your imagination as well. And also draw lots of anatomy studies. Keep it up.

Wait, if you weren't serious until recently, WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE TO GET THIS GOOD?! You're definetly talented, keep going.

I love that horse painting, hope you'll finish it someday. And the recent hand painting is looking very convincing as well. Good job!

    Thanks a lot

I've had my A2 art exam for the last three days, so I don't have much to offer since I had to hand it all in before I could photograph it, I think I can next week though. I'm quite happy with my final piece despite having a breakdown the first day because I rubbished up the skin tones

Anyhow, another small hand study I did for my exam work a few days ago -

Err, random doodlings, my hamster who did not like being drawn at all, horse studies from Sam Savitt's book and some from imagination, a quick life drawing from the shopping center, and then my final exam piece for school -

I've never owned my own but I've been riding since I was 5 and worked with them for a couple of years. And like them a lot too, I guess, hence why they keep reappearing in my sketchpad

Yaaay I'm not the only one sittin' around poring over Sam Savitt My only helpful hint about horses -- watch out for big necks/almost-big-enough heads; otherwise, perfecto

Luv your work! You got skillz

your painting skills are preeeeeetty damn good, i really like the warmth of the hand studies, and your colour selection seems spot on. the odd portraits ive seen so far look great aswell, wouldnt mind seeing some more figures and faces, seeing as you handle pencil adn paint so well.

on a side note, i assume your off to art uni next year, and if so, which one? bein in the same situation, i guess i is just curious to hear from others.... and a little nosey, but hey.

anyway, to reiterate my pure astoundment at ya painting skills, WOWZA

Hey, thank you for your reply in my Da Vinci thread! Now about your work, I Love all your sketching and especialy your horse studies, the skull studies are very accurate as well! You handle paint pretty good as well. Maybe you should try figure art? As in character development? Good luck with your studies my friend!

I got completely bogged down with exams (history and english lit together...do not work out well). Thanks for the comments everyone! I expected my sketchbook to be dead at the bottom of the pile when I came back.

AmontilladoAg - I do have a tendency to get the head/neck area out of proportion, it's definately something I need to focus on.

wookiedabo - I've just finished my A-level, in September I'm going to a local college to do an art foundation course, where hopefully I can figure out what course I want to do at uni, right now I'm not quite sure.

This from the last couple of days, I had to put everything to one side to try and pass my history exams...which I don't think I did, but what can you do. Except for the photoshop one which is without a ref, they're a mix of reffed and imagination only drawings, just ask if you want to know which is which, but I suspect it's obvious.

And I apoligise to AmontilladoAg for having done the very thing she warned me against in the first sketch

You have no reason to hide behind a keyboard, you've got the stuff. This sb is looking real good. You excell at drawing horses/animals. Your final exam piece was awesome too, great color. How did you do on that?

real nice studies. i like that you are doing both human and animal anatomy as well as still life. it would be great to see you use some of the excellent value work from those hands in your other work as well as some full figure drawings.

I like your studies and the paintings are amazing(especially the last one - how long did it take?). Do you paint with oils?

Notspecialist - I'll give some a go, and I'm pretty sure that when college starts in September, they run a life drawing class along with it. I'm not sure if it runs all year though, I hope it does, because I've had bugger all luck finding any classes around here.

h2rra - the last painting was an exam piece done over three days, and I do use oils

Some Loomis studies and a self portrait. I know the photos are terrible but it's been raining for two days straight so I can't take them outside -

This is a half started SP, some crappy non-reffed horses, and some quick poses. I've decided it's sort of amusing that you can tell what the weather's like here by how bad my photos are.
