    drawings and paintings

Ahh so many talented people here. Crazy!

Hi, my name is Artem Mirskov. I live in Northern Va, about 30 min south of DC. I'm a graphic/web designer, 23. I didn’t start drawing until 10 months ago. I’ve always loved arts but unlike a lot of people I didn’t do anything about it. I’m starting to get into painting now (both traditional and digital). My dream is to one day get a scholarship and go to an atelier somewhere. ConceptArt.org school looks amazing ... but what are the odds of that?

Regardless ... I'll be working hard on a career switch. Here’s my growth..

Also, huge thanks for helping me along the way!

Just to record my progress in the beginning of this, here’s a life drawing and a still life from this week. I think they both accurately represent the level I’m at.

I'll be taking pictures from now on. My scanner's not big enough!

    First drawings
Here's a few first drawings around the time when i started in the very beginning of 2006. I'm embarrassed to show them here but everything's out in the open... so you can see my progress and maybe just maybe it will inspire someone to draw

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

thanks for the compliments! it means a lot and spurs me on

Here's a few semi-successful ones from tonight... I won't even bother with the rest

Good Life studies man. I also recently started drawing I'm 23 as well this past oct actually. I only started drawing this past November.

What others will tell you is age is irrelevant, that's mostly true It dedication which you are already aware of.

There is a Learning Section here for late bloomer like us. Also check your profile and click on help if you want to learn how to attach a picture on you sketchbook or post a link.

I'm on my second month of drawing now any advice?
    TheRoad

Transition from Art Critic to Artiste - Diligence, that's all I need.

That really is good mark making. How did you get that good at life studies in 10 months? Did you use a particular book or anything? I've been drawing most of my life and I can't touch your studies with a lamp post.

you're all too kind. It's very encouraging to hear. I think the structure is more important than some of the marks and it's definitely something I'm struggling with. But again thanks all for the kind words!

NicoRaven: I don't know if I qualify to give out any advice. What I can tell you is that you and i are a little late to the game! And if that fact hasn't stopped you, and by looking at your sketchbook it doesn't look like it has, you're on your way. My only advice at this point would be what this board's been preaching all along - is you gotta keep drawing. Milage is key at this stage. How you get that milage may be different from how I get it or the next guy. We all think differently I seem to think in forms the next guy might think in lines but it's all equally good. Sorry for being so vague! But keep going!

Darius: I really connected with Vilppu's approach. http://www.vilppustudio.com/

Try him if you get a chance. You can rent his DVD's for $9 here http://www.art-video.com/

In my opinion one of the best teachers/artists in America today. SCAD students are so lucky!

    Here's a few from today's life session:

A few things from this week:

Painted this head. Tried to connect the shapes. Sorry for the the glare from the medium. I gotta head out to work so I don't want to mess with the pic. And I don't want to adjust it too much, so you see it and give crits for what it is, but one thing i'll say is all the reflected light's gone!

    Attachment 127248

We had a little surprise last night at the open life session. 2 models! But I noticed things start getting weird when that happens. First we were trying to shoot ideas of what pose we wanted when this guy yelled out - "why don't we get a couple wet t-shirts and let them wrestle for 3 hours". Another guy went out and bought a bouquet of roses for one of the models right after the first short pose. And told her not to say a thing. Awkward! I LOVE our group!

and i don't know what this is.

hey your lifestudies are seriously great, it seems to me that you learned tons in those 10 months.

keep working, you're heading at the right direction. by the way i don't think that 23 is a too high age to start drawing generally. i see potential in your works, and come on, you know that you're still young with dedication and patience you will reach your goal if you want to.

From life. a 3 hour session. spent 2.5 hours just on the main shape/silhouette. Repainted it i think 3 times...Didn't want to give up. By the time i worked it out, i only had half an hour to paint. Should've probably just left it as that but who can resist slapping in some color ! btw not trying to be this sketchy/techniqy .. just not enough time

Cool stuff! I would recommend doing some color studies of simple-colored objects around the house and just focus on getting the color relationships correct; ignore the quality of the drawing, how you're applying the paint, and don't put it on until you're confident that you mixed it right.
