I hope this challange doesn't die

The monkey reminds me of the Dreamfall Wattilla toy
    I love it.

Thank you Supervlieg for this cool design!

    This is my meager entry.

I hope that more people participate, this is a great design and refference for those of us who are just starting. And Oblio, thanks for organizing this, it is extremely appreciated!

    Edit1:New WIP pictures.
    Edit2:Final picture added.
    Edit3:Final...ahem...Final picture added

PS: I used Chevant Le Beutocuhe plasteline for this one.

I've been moving along on my version that I started in the other challenge, as with many I'm sure, I've been swamped with Christmahanakwanzica too. I'll try to get some shots tomorrow before I put him in the mold....

Ok here he is in unrefined glory... I put him in the waste mold tonight so I can do a wax for refinement. After that I'm going to do a mold for resin castings

The sculpt is looking very cool. Very nice and clean surface.
That's what I need to learn

Thanks KonstantinZ. He'll get smoother still in the wax. I'm not sure what firmness of chivant you are using but that might be why you are having trouble with a clean surface. I'm using a pretty firm chivant for the brown clay, the arms were actually done in hard castilene. I had run out of chivant LOL. I like how well you stuck to Supervliegs great art work, but I would watch the anatomy. I know I decided not to stick so close to the original design, but I still aimed to make him belivable, I also had a few more weeks of work on him since I started it with the character challenge. So if you feel good about him I'd say keep refining the little bugger.

I began modeling this one ... but now i'm in a hurry to finish my drawing for the thunderdome befor the holidays when i'll be far away from home. So maybe i'll post it when i finish it some day after the holidays. No matter the deadline i hope to finish it ... i'm really close to. Nobody should be bothered because of the deadline, as Oblio said we always can finish and post afterwards. So PLS everybody who began doing something - finish and post no matter when

And ... yeah its so sad to not have interes in this section ... but i think its because of the workshop excitement and the holidays comming ...
    Keep it up guys

    You've made some great sculptures!!!
    Hope there will come more

    Have a nice holidays!

Yeah, I think I am using the Green Lebeutoche Chevant(non-sulfurated)
And it's medium I think. It carves ok, and it holds detail well, but it seems to get warm really quick. I am going to redo the legs and his back, but if you have some advise or comments on the rest of him let me know, I am here to learn

What wax do you use? I have never used wax casting so I am not sure how it goes. Are there any good overviews of the process on the net?

I'll post the pics as soon I get to his legs. Have to start making walls for the shoesmaker.

Thanks again for the advise Garyo.

I'd go one level firmer and see how you like that. Using the sulfur based is better still, but if you are like me I find it irritates my hands and don't get it near my eyes LOL. The wax I'm going to use is the pink hasbro wax, sometimes called azbro wax too. It's hard and very good for making nice smooth surfaces and doing any fine detail. The finished wax is a breeze to mold for doing casting resin like I plan or if you are going to do a vinyl figure you can send it directly to the roto-caster...

Look at how Supervlieg defined the back of the monkey, particularly in the shoulder blades. The value in the art makes them look like they jut out like you have but you don't have that nice triangular shape that says yes these are shoulder blades. His legs are a bit trickier, they are cartoonishly small, but Supervlieg has clear structure in there to attach those big feet to that big body. It's just all folded up. Make clear the attachment between the hip and knee and the knee and ankle. Do those thing and I think you'll get a much tighter likeness.

Thanks for the CCs Garyo! I will try to make it a bit tighter this weekend.
I already took off one hand so I could see if I could add more clay underneath to carve him new feet. so that should be fun. And those shoulder blades sure need work Thanks

I'll try to do a mold and a cast of this in wax when I get a chance,
should be interesting to see how it works. Where do you buy your wax?

Are you putting any fur on yours?

Ok, here is the new take on the legs and a bit more work on the shoulders.

I know it looks like a frog, grrr.

Tried to do a fur like texture on him, but not very effective atm.
The bananna idea was shamelessly stolen from Garyo
It's just too fun not to do one

Oh well, another evening after work went by.

As always any ccs are welcome.

    Hello,

Because of my total lack of creativity, I've been looking for some concept art to make some model after, and I'm glad that I've found this challange.

Here is a wip of what I've done today.

    Thanks Supervlieg for the concept!

Got some time tonight, so I could redo the legs. I hope he isn't looking worse.
I am still not sure how to smooth the chevant Le Beutoche effectively.
Hopefully it will come with practice. Other than that this little fellow is a lot of fun to do

How is everyone doing with their entries?

Did some work on the shoulder blades and trapezium today, hopefully it looks better

Next step is the butt, and I am not sure go about it.
Will try smoothing with water and a brush today. I am not sure if it will work, but it's worth a try. the 'Ape' sign was added just for fun and is going to be removed since there are too many things there already with the zippo bannana.

Oh and now I see why people do a greyscale photo, it shows more detail.
If there anymore crits on his back please let me know. Sometimes I am just blind and don't see obvious things.

Ok this is as far as I could go for now.
I am still unhappy with its butt, but I'll have to leave it for later.

Here are some final pictures. Blending with water worked ok, but not as well as I would liked it to. Still, it's a start

Looking forward to seeing your finals Gary and Undoz.

    Hi guys,

    I've updated my previous wip.

Konstantin : haha, I like what you've done with the legs. Do you mind if I steal your ideea with the banana in the hand? I'd like to place a grenade instead

    LOL go ahead
The bannana idea first came from Gary O anyway
I kind of stole it from him and turned it into a zippo

I am happy that you are liking the legs It was the hardest part for me to do and the most fun.

I really like your model, it looks much more flashed out. Do keep the wips though It's always fun to see how a piece progresses.

    Hey Gang,
Still have a way to go before a final painted resin casting, but wanted to share the progress at this point. I really wish non-sculpting things would stop slowing my progress, but I have made progress still

He's all cast up in hasbro wax now and I've gone to town on first pass leveling and some of the detailing. Most of this I do with sharp blades and rifler files. The blades are great for quickly knocking down high spots and then going over with the riflers, the light grooves they leave makes it easy to find the low spots. I fill the lows with my waxer and hit em again with the blades and riflers till I'm satisfied with the surface. I'll continue from here by adding some suggestion of fur at the edges of his bald areas. Then I go at the surface with 320 grit sandpaper to get ride of the rifler marks. After that a fine lace to make it squeaky smooth and he'll be ready for molding.

    Hey Oblio,
It's Garyo Thanks for the comment, but could you be a bit more specific? Narrower shoulders? It's not as much fun making drastic changes in wax, but they still can be done....

And don't worry about the real life stuff getting in the way I know it all too well also. Besides, I think extra time for sculpting is a good thing.

Well i started... but got completely stumped by the monkeys man breast for some reason
then i got whacked by exams

next compo i am entering, i have nightmares about the monkeys breasts, so i can no longer touch them!
    Nice shizzle from everyone else

and good luck on the country change oblio

Garyo- I think he means the arms are to thin?
Also, is the shoulder blade wrong?... it looks really unnatural bending upwards like that with the dip in the top of it!

Right then I'll beef up his upper arm and delts. And I think its the trapezuis muscle that connects the neck and the shoulder blade that is missing...

    Thanks for the input guys.
