    my WIP

just getting the basic structure down and lightly shading in the darkest shadows, i am kind of fumbling my way through this whole process based on what i have picked up here and there on CA, first real master study i have ever done so comments and crits on my process so far will be really helpful,

    cheers

    Choice 14:
    Alessandro Algardi (1598-1654)
    Titan
    Terracotta, c.1650-1659
    Hermitage, St Petersburg

EDIT:update, just cracking away at the rendering, starting to see alot of things out of proportion such as the head, the thickness of the rendered arm *sigh*am far to lazy to rub it out and go back to change it, i'll finish best i can and then try another, but for now i am going to bed.

Finally finished work so i can now start this. This is a small ways through my first pass over it. I don't get how you colour it do you use layers ie. colour, overlay?
Or do you just paint over it in colour? If you paint over it in colour won't it block out the greyscale and then what was the point of doing a tonal version first? Excuse my ignorance i just always go straight in with the colour and don't know how to paint over a tonal drawing.

    Very nice sketch DannySketch
    Coming along nicely Uziel
    Great, goes without saying Rebeccak.

    Hi guys,

It's good to see more contributions here. I'm going to be scarce for the next few days due to the fact that I have to hang my thesis show - but please continue to post your work and to provide one another with comments and constructive critique.

Mitze, good to have you join us, and thank you for the compliment. Nice start to this! Regarding grayscale to color painting methods, check out Steven Stahlberg's excellent painting tutorial here:

    http://www.androidblues.com/Jealousy...lousystep.html

DannySketch, that is looking really good so far - keep working on this! I have done many copies of the same master work, and each time, I get something new out of it. You may find yourself revisiting certain master works to copy, there is nothing wrong with that. Also, if you find that you are having a problem drawing a certain area, feel free to draw that area larger / independently on a separate page in order to better understand it's form. Quite often there are certain areas for artists that are harder to understand than others, and the best way to understand them better is to study them further.

Looking forward to seeing more of your and everyone's work.

    Cheers,

    -Rebeccak

Here's my attempt: Woman At The Well done with charcoal. I'm trying to get rid of fixative smell in my small room.

Got a little bit of time today after work, figured I'd start one up.
Thanks again for doing this Rebeccaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

I'm really crummy with exterior edges on the face it seems, got any 'fixes' anyone? Negative shapes I guess , did notice the break in the jaw is a good angle check.

So many shapes in faces... Aieee! Takes quite awhile.

Ok, had some free time today to pick up where I left off last night. Not sure if I'm going to take this much further, clothing... not ready for that yet haha. Want some more portrait practice, this one has ... too many faults.

Going to put this and the PSD up in my demo thread.

Heheh, thanks. It's 'pretty' close to the original, I'm happy with the results don't get me wrong. But I'm trying to tighten up the process, the visualization. Notice in the GIF that I had to stretch everything out horizontally? How am I supposed to do that on canvas ... ? hehe.

Added just a JPEG up there as I noticed it was annoying to wait 20 odd seconds to see the end.

Uziel i think the eyes are a bit too small for a young woman. and her left eye is a tad too low those should be easy to fix i think. wonderful render tho

hey IdiotApathy beautiful atmoshpere i love the steps thanks

    thanks a bunch Rebeccak!!

here's my start the proportions are way off and her pose is more stiff.

[Edit] well here's a couple more hours on this. i don't think i going to do much more to it because i had a lot of trouble with it.

Here is my latest attempt. I'm definately learning, though I still need to work on color relationships and I seem to be trying different tools everytime I draw. I hope to get comfortable with some method before this workshop is all over.

Here is my first try on the subject. Soon i might start painting. One thing have been hammering in my mind tough... Do you guys think it´s going to be a major trouble the fact that i´ll work on different medium (tempera gouache instead of oils) and a probably different size (not taller than an A4 paper)?

Yes Idiot Apathy, you´re totally right...

Well, just after i posted the sketch above, i went to drawn this one i´m showing now. I had the paper streched on a piece of wood and decided to take it of to scan and them stretch it again, so i already painted on it for about 6 or 7 hours non-stop and i´m going to sleep (it´s 3:25 am here in Brazil...). Tomorrow i´ll try to finish it to show here, cause i don´t have a camera and i won´t take it off the wood to scan the progress, hehe....

Chardy, great to see your progress, keep it up!

paperX, glad to have you aboard! Good solid start, keep pushing those values!

Chardy, beautiful drawing so far, and I say it's never too late to do something you love! Welcome to Conceptart and to the Workshop!

Experimental 'colorized' version - base layer - the grayscale isn't finished yet.
