Here's some still life studies I've done with oils...trying to teach myself haha They turned out pretty terrible so would love some crits, I'm having some trouble painting laying down paints on top of each other, either I'm not painting wet-on-wet correctly or my brushes are too crappy

the lighting on the photos aren't the best so some colours have been altered from what they look like in real life


Ran out of time on this as the lighting completely changed...doing these at my friend's place so have to finish in one session (featuring possibly the least appetizing looking orange in the world )




Tried to be less ambitious this time and just stuck with a simple apple (or more of an apple/orange crossbreed)




Kinda failed to get a good "glass" look, also I'm not sure why but the back ground looks less well blended with the back of the table top in the photo than it does in real life , also, I didn't use black, its more of a dark olive green. The edgework is terrible in this one

The study2final is wowwwwwwwwww!!!!
Maybe try to use the watercoloring in some other kind of artworks.Maybe more linework as base and simply giving mood with the transparent qualities of the watercolor.

Hey...you been busy.

I see you're getting the hang of working with pen...its all about working in layers...unless your the freaking Black Frog that is . Grey marker is a good choice for the under-sketch, I never really pushed that approach, usually just use non-photo pencil or a very fine pen (like a HI-TEC-C or such).

Stuff's looking pretty good. Mix in some more creative stuff, I know you're never lacking for ideas...

I think a balance of creation and study is important for you because, while your studies are uniformly excellent, a lot of you creative work is messy, disjointed, lacking in a sense of form and space.

Your studies have excellent rendering of planes and excellent distribution of values, you need to apply that to an understanding of form and composition in your creative work.

When you are working from life/ref (even for quick sketches) try first to capture the gesture with a few careful and simple strokes. Second, try to analyze the main forms and indicate them such that the subject appears as a crude model of itself. If you get to that stage you have enough to apply values for composition, and a perspective framework to build upon. Only then should you worry about the details.

I'm not saying this is the best approach for recording interesting details or capturing a good portrait or landscape, I'm saying this is a good way to drill the understanding of form and gesture into your brain, so that it comes naturally when you are working without reference. BTW, are you still doing life drawing sessions? You had some awesome from-life stuff earlier.

One big issue in your creative work is, you should be sketching a mannequin or skeleton to keep your proportions straight and to set the forms into a perspective space. A lot of times your figures suffer from big-headedness (looks too child-like), mis-matched joints, or general flatness...all of these can be corrected by visualizing a good mannequin. Again this is only one technique, but I think its really essential a certain stage of progress.

BTW post #569 was really strong...especially the designs for the girl in that animation. One note, I'm not sure if it was deliberate, she looked more human than the boy, who seems to be just a cartoon character...either way, I'd like to see more in-depth developments for characters, work the analytical into the creative.

Keep it up man, you're working hard...sorry I haven't dropped by in a while.

PS oh yeah...watercolors look fine...its a hard-ass medium. Look at Sargent and Arthur Rackham for inspiration. On the oils: I don't know much about the medium, but I think maybe you're being to stingy with the paint, not laying it on heavy enough?

Great studies and for watercolour I suggest playing with wet on wet techniques. Its my fave method and full of happy accident.

really love the kick boxing studies, the flow is nice.
you mentioned something about being weak with values, I would say that look at the edges you are making and try to play with them, the value transition is as important as values, in fact with variation you can do away with unnecessary changes in values

about the life studies in paints, one thing I noticed is that lack of contours when forms meet. Also, I saw the way the you have painted the objects, its as if they don't have much weight, and the point of contact with the table(surface they are kept on) is blurry.
There is almost no reflected light. it would be better for now to also take the pic of the composition so you can do multiple sessions later on too.

Awesome updates man!! Post#602 is a real stand-out update especially the girl in the last pic and the girl that was polished up. I'd have to agree with Huey about trying the wet-on-wet technique a la Bob Ross. Keep up the good work my friend.

Sorry guys for the long absence again...uni has started once more...and its just sucking away my time doing boring stuff again (writing proposals *coughBSINGcough*, research etc etc) Well I don't mind researching...just wish I had time to do drawing at the same time *sigh*

Luckily I managed to switch one of my papers to Graphic Design's Illustration paper (compulsory life drawing!! WOOT!) So at least I'm not getting SOME drawing done....

Just a dump of life drawing stuff I've done...sorry for the lack of imagination stuff again...I also really need to get an A3 scanner..

great stuff

those tonal figure paintings look pretty good. Good range and generally well drawn. Consider trying to keep your light shapes unified almost as much as you want your shadows to be. I'd say don't jump the tone of the highlights quite so much except in very key area's. be very careful with the tone of darker marks that you put on planes facing the light. Keeping tones close is important. it especially helps with femininity if you're after that.

hey long time no speak paper. shaping up well - those digis a few posts back look fantastic. With the figures - and especially the ink ones - they feel rushed. Lots of little artifacts that don't help describe the figure and don't add to the drawing visually. Invest more time. Don't try to become good at drawing fast, rather get faster at making good drawings.

Cool stuff though, you've come a long way man>

Man, I wish I was figure drawing so much! This is great to see! Work on getting more confidence in to those lines, dude! Try contour drawings from life with a pen. They're rough!
