    Heya PaperX,

I can't believe how long its been since I visiting your sketchbook...its embarrassing!

Obviously you've put out an incredible amount of work. Just absolutely relentless, and its really paid off. Your pencils and linework are much more confident and dimensional, and your brushstrokes and use of color are tremendously better. That last self-portrait looks really good.

I have to say, you really need to post some more stuff, soon!

    A couple of crits;

A lot of your digi-paint pieces are suffering from a sense of claustrophobia, they're lacking in depth. I think this is because there is not enough variation in brushwork, value, and saturation between the foreground and background areas. Also, a lot of the forms seem too heavy and blocky (again, I think not enough variation in brushwork or just level-of-detail).

In general, I think you still need to put more time into putting a 'finished polish' on some of your pieces. Be more confident in your compositional choices. In that 'forgiveness' piece you made a lot of major changes as you went a long...you had a perfectly good idea at the start, so that time and energy probably would have been better spent refining the forms and rendering. Even if the composition could have been improved, the time to do that would be before you added a ton of detail and rendering.

More-more-more! No excuses! We all miss you...

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone...sorry I kinda disappeared for a few months. The truth is that my plan kinda fell through as my uni refused to return the fees I already paid...so I'm pretty much still stuck here.

I have been doing some sketching over the past few months...I'll post some sketches after I get my sketchbook back from school...Anyways I promised sketcheth I'll update this sb again so...here's two digital painting's I did for the only paper in my course that actually involves some drawing

I did a whole bunch of bridgman studies recently but I doubt anyone's really interested in seeing them...I'll update again soonish I hope

That first pic is beautifully james jean-ish, gorgeous colours. Is it for or about anything in particular? Also funny how the second pic has a very similar composition and overall silhouette. Wicked stuff man.

Thanks heaps guys...I really should be updating more...

Here's a rough animatic for the animation I'm working on for Uni...basically a moving version of my storyboard to test out timing.

Not very happy with the pacing...feels a bit too rushed in parts.....would love to get some feedback (as I'm starting to animate this, also...sorry about the crappy video quality, my lame uploading speeds just wouldn't allow anything better)

while we're at it...here's a rotoscope of beyonce's single ladies music video I had to do for uni.....after doing 750 frames of this I think I'll have to disagree with Kayne West .....so SICK of that song haha

Duuude! YOU UPDATE! You make my heart overflow with joy. The rotoscope was a treat.

I dunno a whole ton about animation but it seems to me that the beginning panning through the city sequence just feels a little jarringly quick, and that if there were things moving in the different scenes, you'd want to have the camera drift by at a slower pace so you could take in it all...
The little snippet with the cat running into the tent seems like it could move a little quicker as well, but it might seem to abrupt if it were moving faster in the animatic form.

All that aside, the stuff looks great! What's the program you're studying in now like? I look forward to seeing more!

Maybe also that slow turn through the woods to see the angel, it kind of feels like it drags on for a bit after she glances left and right.

    Crits eh?

Where's the conflict? WHERE IS THE CONFLICT?

Hehe, just kidding, I'll stick to the technical aspects, and give y'all a pass on the story. Good use of panning and limited frames, but a couple scenes are desperately in need of some kind of walk cycle. Even just a little bobbing or swaying would be better. The worst is the skating cat...lol.

Also some of your brushstrokes (cast shadows especially) are softer and rougher than they probably should be. If you concentrate on a few bolder values, you could probably simplify your work a great deal. In that same vein, I know this is a student WIP, but you should probably tighten up your strokes a bit...they can be painterly or calligraphic, but not sloppy.

Overall, pretty good, like I said, the minimal use of keyframes is not too jarring.

Not much to say about the rotoscope...I assume its a good study to do, but I think I'd need to see some application to judge that. Lines look pretty clean, and I do get a sense of volume.

    Keep updating man!

    Love the work man!
I'm just starting to do a little bit of animation, so no crits from me yet as I still have to learn the basics.
    But wow ^_^ nice!
I'd say just try to pick up as much as you can from the uni. Are you continuing it after this year?

Nice updated Allan! The Beyonce rotoscope is really great, you captured the female from in movement very nicely. I've only tried a 5 frame dance animation back in march, but I've been wanting to do a new one, what's it like drawing 750 frames?
I wanted to give you some feedback on the first rotoscope but I'm too sleepy now..

Thanks for the update Allan - the animations are very interesting, and tempting - but I'm lazy and I would have to relearn programs - so meh, instead I'll just hope you will provide more glorious updates in the future.

First attempt at motion capturing (you have probably noticed a trend here, my animation course basically goes rotoscoping > motion capturing > making animation...with none of the fundamentals inbetween...the course leader blew all the budget on getting a low spec mocap system rather than a good teacher *sigh*). Not really pleased with this at all but just putting this here to show the uni side of things.

Animation is of some girl at a bar rejecting a guy's advances. I didn't make the model, and I know its jittery but cleaning up mocap data is a huge pain in the ass...especially when your mocap system isn't very good ...weta makes it look easy in avatar.

My entry for october 11-second club...really dropped the ball on this one...the due date was clashing with a bunch of other assignments so I tried to rush it a bit, the limited animation didn't work well as I expected and my use of fading to transition was quite a terrible choice haha

This is the result of the animation I was working on (completely changed the idea at the last minute...my original plan was impossible to complete due to the workload). I mainly wanted to try animating traditionally so I opted for something shorter and more manageable.

This is my first proper attempt at traditional cell animation, and I rushed it in one week for an assignment hand in so I did not have time to colour or shade in the cells (just scanning the cells individually took hours). Done deliberately in a somewhat Anime style, as I wanted to portray inside this world of animation (or rather Japanese animation) the more 'Anime' one's drawing style is, the more it would be accepted as "correct". Note, this is in no way intended to be against Anime, but rather against the act of prejudice against art styles in general. Composited in After Effects, some transition scenes were taken from storyboard (done in photoshop) as I did not have time to re-do them. Copyright of the song 'Down is the new up' belongs to Radiohead obviously.
