The Expose entry looks cool, good luck with it!
For the last SP it looks a little muddy (this is just my opinion of course), I'm guessing it's due to the almost pure grays you used. They don't really seem to work too well. Apart from that, it's a good portrait!
that last SP was realy goodlooks like you are learning something from them

PAPERX!
Sweet update, you really pulled out all the stops on that painting eh?
can't wait for more![]()
Hi paperX,
Lovely Expose entry. Best of luck with it.
As far as your SP goes, one of the reasons why it's getting muddy is because the values aren't reading well. One of the exercises we do all the time in school is to think of areas as either belonging to light or to shadow and to slightly exaggerate the differences between the two for a clearer read. When I work in Photoshop, I like to keep on top a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer with the Saturation set to 0 - this gives me a grayscale version of my image to to help me figure out the value structure of my piece without having to worry about the color.
To improve your SP, I would push the values in your shadow areas darker than you have here. Also, be sure to think about the planes of the head. For example, if light is coming down onto a head, then that means planes facing up will receive light, and planes facing down will be in shadow. In typical 3/4 top-down studio lighting the planes that are in shadow would include:
• area underneath fringes of the hair
• bottom plane of brow ridge
• area underneath the top eyelid
• bottom plane of the nose
• upper lip
• area underneath the lower lip
• area underneath the chin
... and so on and so forth. If you don't quite get what I'm talking about, here's an Asaro head I have lying around that I propped up with lighting mimicing your SP to give you a visual representation of what I just described. Looking at this, it should be clear which areas you need to push darker for a better read (for instance, the bottom plane of the nose).
Keep going man, you're making great progress.
the SP with the bonsi is great you should add some color to it and finish it up
PieMonster: yeah I was going for neutral cool greens in the shadow but i think I might've gone too far haha, thanks for pointing it out!
DStraX: I feel like I'm learning from them tooits a good practice!
kingkostas: cheers dude, thanks for the constant support!
Helioth: more will come! thanks for dropping by!
sfa: thanks heaps for the crits man...actually I didn't really think about hte lighting and just started painting haha, there were 2 lights on in my room at the time I think so there was a lot of dispersing going onI'll definitely try to take what you said in to account next time
thanks again for being so helpful!
jokerrabit: I'll see haha, thanks for the comment man!

doodle (need to do more stuff from imagination, I feel like my creativity is slipping a bit these days)
Started a Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida study...
Sometimes one SP just isn't enough...if only they looked more like me haha, oh well was a good practice at drawing different expressions quickly
thats a good amount of work that you have hear. This amount of heads sure give you alot of experience.
Sfa made a damn good explanation in the previous post, keep an eye on it.
The one from imagination=Check the functionality, very strange how the torso defense system is connected with the skirt , with the X system.
This is only a point for making me thinking about functionality.
Also check a little about the anatomy.
Keep up working hard!!!see ya pal!!!

TEAM CHOW II : TEAM THUNDERCATS!
The photos look stunning, I have to say. You must've gotten a nice one! Keep it going, good luck with your expose entry, you've accomplished a lot in these past couple of weeks...has uni started back up for you yet? Well, anyways. Keep it going, this all looks fantastic. Love the work you're doing. I look forward to seeing more!
great range of expressions... ever performed/ acted?
thanks for the comment guys! will post some replys later...haven't updated because uni started again for me *sigh*...Already I'm sick of it...I planning on quitting and save up some money to try for CA atelier or attend Watts atelier for a semester.
I really need a good art learning environment in real life right now rather than all this bullshit my course is feeding me...(I hope I can get my fees back haha...)
some studies i squeezed in tonight...god my values suck...
Cool studies, especially that SP spread. Something weird seems to be going on with the right (for the viewer) part of the hip/waist on that last study. I could be wrong though.![]()
actually its interesting
Pal if you get accepted to CA atelier how you are gonna move from new zealand to america and what about renting a house, about money etc.Me myself thinking a lot about going to foreign land but i aim first to make money freelance and then manage to go there with money.
Share your plan if you can
See ya keep up

nice man looks really nice and ca isent it har doo get in ther ? and i whil really soon uppdate check it aoot
What specifically is going on in your class that you dont like?? I dont have a lot to crit because I think you are using some nice colors, and brave strokes. And hey I've seen sucky values, and those ones aren't way down there sir! Just get those harder edges where they belong, and use a softer brush to remove ones that don't if you want a more polished look. It looks like you don't do a lot of underdrawing for your portrait sketches on this page and yet they still feel quite good![]()

wher did u goo dude!!!!
Hupdates!?
Really nice sketchbook man! Your colors are looking really good and your values are coming along nicely too. I think your work would benefit if you added hard edges and some brush textures here and there.
I'm looking forward to working with you.
Hey PaperX!
Impressive ammount of studies you've got here, only thing that bothers me it's a little too much of You and too little of anything else, try doing some other stuf from life, other parts of the body, some dead nature etc.
Best wishes!, ICE
rly nice works here.. great shading!
Pal give us some updates to see that you are alive!!!!
CheckBiomechawolf
Haha he's alive....
He's just super busy with uni work atm.....
