Great stuff paperX! My two cents for critique is that if you trained your hand to make longer cleaner lines I think it would improve your work a lot.

    Hope that helps.

sorry for double post...wanted to keep this separate....we started doing some storyboarding for uni so I thought I'd post them here for critique:

firstly we started off by doing one based on the music video for Karma Police by Radiohead (just happens to be one of my favourite songs )

Medium: Markers, ink pens, twink, and white pencil/charcoal.
PS: my teacher pretty much didn't teach us anything so I based these storyboards examples I found on google. (please point out any obvious errors you see!)

Next is one I made for a story concept (I had really limited time for this so I didn't think up much of a story...was trying to convey a mood more, I also wrote the comments and stuff on the physical copy to hand in...so this might not make much sense sorry...) I made a template based off a storyboard page I found from Miyazaki's Kiki's Delivery Service (please dont sue me guys! :'( )

    Medium: photoshop, used reference.

    UPDATE!!!!!!!!

Good on you man, that's a colossal update after a long time.

I really like this one. The left leg on this guy is way too thin though, I'm sure it couldn't support him.

Nice V bottle on the second storyboard. My only crit on it is the fingers - they're all stiff. There's too much straightness, try to get a relaxed look, some fluidity. Think of each finger's individual sections, how they'll just fall and sit in their own comfortable space. It seems like the sort of drawing I end up with when I'm tense. If you're drawing tense, listen to some Daft Punk!

    Hey Paper X,

Recognized your doujin cover. I was also selling with my friends at Doujin Overload. You made your doujin with Kouken right? I'll have to make sure to introduce myself next time.

btw those are really cool storyboards!

I took some time to look at your sketchbook. It great to see that you put so much time and effort to get better and yes, you are getting better. I see tremendous improvement from the beginning to the end of your sketchbook. I think I could learn a great deal of your effort. I am a master of procrastination and I really want to break that habit. It was also nice to see you doing a lot of self portraits and even if you do one in five minutes I still can see it is you.

Keep up the great work and I want to see more so I'll be dropping by from time to time.

Very nice stuff! As far as critique goes the only thing I can say that I personally spot is a tad bit of work that needs to be done on perspective+proportion as far as references go.
I'm not that great though so I'm not sure if that's even helpful!
    (hahahaha)

Ah! We finally got another update!

Unfortunately I don't have any critique for you colour face either.. for obvious reasons.

I'm finally starting to see what you mean about that drawing you did of me.. it looked good early on. But I like the drawing you did of that middle aged man, with the beard etc. Looks sort of like the cover illustration for Metal Gear Solid 3.

Hey man, good to meet you in Wellington!

Those storyboards look like the best thing you've done so far, they turned out quite well. I think they could probably be a bit more bold, less sketchy and gradually built-up.

In general you seem to have kind of an inconsistent level of quality, some of your works are much better than others, I'm guessing the missing ingredient is *time*, either time per piece or time between pieces.

You also tend to rely heavily on building up your forms from sketchy rhythmic lines. This isn't such a bad approach sometimes, but it tends to flatten things, take away their volume. It also makes everything look a bit aimless, kind of flopping around. Its especially not helpful when applied to mechanical stuff...much more appropriate to monsters and stuff.

I would say work on being able to much more boldly lay down your lines, and when you do build things up from rhythmic lines, use that as an underlying sketch, then go in on top and clean up the lines, make sure that all the correct contours and overlapping are communicated effectively.

On the color face: needs more WORK...more layering of strokes and colors, more observation from life. In general you need to apply a more finished level of rendering and such...you've got lots of good ideas here, pieces where you started something but left it at the stage of sketch or an initial concept drawing...commit to producing some 'complete' pieces (just think...could this piece be used, as is, for production of a film, animation, game, whatever).

Lots of good imagination here, keep pushing it!
sketchbook...a kitten dies every time you don't comment

“When forced to work within a strict framework,
the imagination is taxed to its utmost – and will
produce its richest ideas. Given total freedom,
the work is likely to sprawl.”

A music video I made for a school animation assignment, wasn't completely happy with it due to time constraints but check it out if you're interested I guess.

The song is 'Black Swan' by Thom Yorke:

    Freakin cool animation dood.

haha you already know my crits for your tree piece but it still think it has too much contrast all around....focus it on ur focal areas...and don't use curves/colour balance too much...it kinda gives u that "overexposed" look...
Try to use to them only at the very beginning to give you a headstart or at the very end to balance things out.

Great to see an update and I'm looking forward to the next one

I like your animation, tells a good story and introduces me to new music that makes me want to draw.. was gonna critique your painting but I'll be back later, drawing now
