    Good work!
    But don't get too quickly to rendering. Lines are a very important part of the drawing... so get them as accurate as possible =)
    Don't hesitate to also use planes for the figure!!

    dan liimatta: haha thanks man, trying hard not to take shortcuts

    Exocentric: thanks!~ i have to say tho...regarding the ribs....after the first couple it kinda gets into a pattern lol , thanks for the crit btw! indeed i need to push my values and contrast

    Kronos: hey man! your stuff is awesome, how can i not comment? we all just have to keep working hard eh?

    DanielC: thanks for the C&C! yeah my line work is pretty bad....still working on that

    Here's Page 2 ...this time the focus is on the muscle formations beneath the skin (the figure is pretty bad i know, i flipped it after i finished and saw all these mistakes , oh well a practice is a practice, just gotta learn from the mistakes )

    And btw thanks for dropping by my sb mate , really appreciate the support.

    hey nice...keep doing those studies....
    Maybe you could take more time when you render your figure, don't rush it. It's kinda really scribbly right now

    nice updates if you fix the arms on the last update, it would make an interesting piece.

    about the clean lines, if you look at some of my pencil/pen doodles and sketches, they will make anyone's lines look clean I think I may have one of the messiest lines in CA.

    MSN convo between PaperX and myself
    Bolded the crits
    You can read some of PaperX's ideas in the convo

    ~ paperX ~: warning its really messy lol dont blame me
    mc2mc2 : lol well its ur piece so ur to blame
    is dat a tree
    ~ paperX ~: yes
    mc2mc2 : ooo
    mc2mc2 : its lik a cloaked figure
    ~ paperX ~: yes it is
    mc2mc2 : lol
    it looks kinda weird cuz ur blowing cloak is lik at tangent to the perspective lines to the vanishing pt at teh head, kno wat im sayin
    looks lik a flat person in perspective

    ~ paperX ~: hmm...so should i stick the vanishing pt lower?
    mc2mc2 : lol depends on ur "composition"
    wat do u wanna show?
    ~ paperX ~: isolation?
    mc2mc2 : well...doesnt feel isolated cuz its all enclosed up and the dood is lik real close to the camera
    feels lik ur rite there
    ~ paperX ~: well not isolation as in in the middle of no where kind sense
    more like....alone and being enclosed kinda sense
    mc2mc2 : hmm...
    ~ paperX ~: the vanishing pt isn't really clear at this pt....
    i think its more at her waist.....
    mc2mc2 : yea i kno but it seems the vanishing pt is at her head
    ~ paperX ~: yeah i know
    i stopped at that point to take a shower lol
    mc2mc2 : lol ok fix it up
    ~ paperX ~: it was on the same layer so i didn't wanna scribble over her face
    also i didn't do the trees at the back....its more like really black behind her, except u cant tell
    mc2mc2 : lol...shes also kinda titled to the left
    ~ paperX ~: yeah the cloak needs fixing

    im thinking of making her hold like a lamp sorta thing
    cuz otherwise u cant even see her face since the light source is behind her lol
    mc2mc2 : wats dat thing on the left
    ~ paperX ~: its supposd to be a flower growing on a rock lol
    like the petals are being blown off....but u know...lazy doodle style lol

    mc2mc2 : lol kk
    ~ paperX ~: im also thinking maybe like extend the piece even further down...and stick like a small pond in front of her...but then its gonna be really confusing lighting
    and might lose some of that enclosure
    mc2mc2 : lol kk...y isnt the grass blowing to the right
    ~ paperX ~: cuz i drew the grass first lol b4 i decided to have the wind blow to the right
    nice find there lol
    didn't see that

    lol that's cuz I didn't show the pencils it had lines everywhere.

    Anyhow, that last one is hard to tell what is going on right now. But use the big brushes to block in form and work your way down to the smaller brushes as more details are added. I'm learning this too, err trying to anyways.

    Great work in here paper. You are making great strides and studying the right things! I like the composition of the last painting as well. Great job.

    I noticed something when looking through your drawings that I think I might be able to help with. I see a lot of confusion in your shadow areas. The edges in the shadow areas and just the masses of tone are not quite right. I think you are not yet thinking about the shadow areas as masses of tone...not lines or anything like that. Check out brom's art and you will see how little he does in the shadow areas. He has almost an even tone in all of his shadow areas. Remember shadows define form and the light areas tell us what it is (texture, etc...).

    http://www.bromart.com/index.html

    Also look at Jacob Collins drawing page as well...he shows the same idea:

    http://www.jacobcollinspaintings.com/drawing1.html

    The important thing when doing muscles and everything is knowing what their mass is...if you know and can imagine what they look like in a 3d space you can correctly define the shadow area. But not much needs to be done in the shadow area at all. Sometimes even just a flat tone will work great...depends what you are going for. But above all things you need to think of shadows as masses of tone...not a collection of lines. Masses of tone are big blobs that have different edges in relation to one another etc.. I hope that makes sense. Keep up your work ethic you are pushing hard and it will pay off. Love the Ingres studies great job on them.

    MindCandyMan: pld: wow....sorry about sounding like a fanboy but i cant believe THE MindCandyMan commented and gave me critique....you're like...one of my art heroes i think ill go take some screenshots now

    fanboy-ism aside...i just wanted to thank you for that incredible post of critique, indeed shading is one of my biggest weaknesses (i have quite a few for that matter) so I'll try my best to correct it in the future

    I also like to just take this time to thank everyone who have and maybe will in the future give me supportive comments and critique here on Concept Art.org...everyone of you is an inspiration to me

    That's pretty...wow. Yeah. I like the colors you've chosen for the Teen Challenge piece. The moon is gorgeous, and I like the tree highlights, like you said, you're pretty much there, just little refinements will make the piece. Maybe you could add something more to the glowy balls... I don't know if you just intended them to be glowing specks or what, but maybe some brighter hairs of light streaming after them would break up that airbrush look, because it's a little inconsistent with the textured look of the rest of the piece... Anyways, my hat is off to anybody who can draw trees. I need to work on that. Great piece!

    There's some really impressive progress mate. MCM makes a really good point about the shadows. Just something to add (follows logically to what he said) - edges in dark areas will also be softer, whereas edges in lighter areas will be hard and well defined.

    Your thumbnails are good but I see a great deal of fear in them. The only person a thumb needs to make sense to is you - NO ONE else. So don't be afraid of going absolutely whack with them - let go of the control and let them take their own route. More often than not it will be these happy accidents that make for the better artwork, not the planned and contrived thumbs.

    So go whack and have fun.
    keep up the studies, you're making awesome progress.

    hey dude, great progress happening, the teen TD is real nice, i think just a little refinement would help it a lot particularly in the bottom third, some of the strokes are not working with the piece and just look a tad messy.

    anyway, it looks like you already have a few good critiques and things to work on so i'll save up for next time

    keep working dude, things are looking good!

    Unhappy

    asoir: hey thanks for the comment man i might fix things up a bit later but i really want to move on to my CHOW piece atm so sorry about the "transparent grass"

    Blaz: thanks! yeah i get that problem too sometimes , remind me to comment your sb sometime (need sleep now sorry )

    Brendan N: hey man i just wanted to say a big Thank You for that piece of critique, only after you told me about the problem with my thumbnails did i realise how correct you are. looking back now, the only "real" thumbnail out of the whole bunch is probably the first one, and even with that i was scared of ppl not realising what the tentacles would look like so i added the budget outlines . to say your comment opened up my eyes would be an understatement once again Thank you for helping out a noob in need

    Kronos: thanks man...like i said for asoir ...really wanna move on to CHOW piece...but thanks alot for giving me crits, mucho appreciated

    dan liimatta: thanks gotta work harder tho if i wanna get in to CA atelier

    Longxiang: haha thanks telling the truth...i'll probably have a hard time doing one of similar "bad-ass-ness" if you told me to do it again. it was just one of those "happy accidents" , anyways like i said with Blaz, remind me to leave a reply in ur sb man, gotta return such a nice compliment (btw are you chinese? or just living in china?)

    -----

    Anyways time for the update....been slacking around sorta today... MUST WORK HARDER

    so im making some changes around here:

    1. every night when i update im gonna make a list of art that im aim to complete by the end of the following day, you can all kick my virtual ass if i dont comply
    2. i realised that i mess around with the brightness and contrast of my scans entirely too much, and the result looks pretty artificial and the paper waaaay too bright, so im going to try and keep some of the paper texture form now on (easier on the eyes and looks more natural )
    3. had a look at the CA atelier thread today...and realised im working NOT HARD ENOUGH. so yeah...GOT.TO.WORK.HARDER

    ~~~so yeah....heres the goals for tomorrow:~~~
    a) get at least 30%+ of my CHOW entry finished
    b) do a frikking joseph sheppard study like i said i would daily
    c) do some bridgman figures
    d) do a self-portrait
    e) some doodles if i have time
    so there....hopefully its not too much for me to handle
    --------
    annnnnd here's the updates (god this is a long rant):
    1. random doodles...pretty crappy
    2. my dad got bored (maybe drunk too ) and decided he'll pose for me....................
    ............then decided that it was too tiring after 10 minutes had to rush and make stuff up so it looks pretty crappy (arrg, excuses, excuses )
    3. doodles, tried to a clean figure like exocentric and mc2mc2 but failed pretty miserably, my lines are still as sketchy as ever (not to mention the horrific doodle down the bottom)
    4. some random figure stuff, bottom left corner = crap, bottom right corner = bridgmans (thats the difference right there )
    5. bridgman arm study
    6. a chow doodle, i was thinking that since the brief was about an ex-lord of Atlantis who survived the sinking in to the ocean....he probably shouldn't have fins and gills and stuff (or else the whole race probably would've survived)
    so I'm thinking of going with a steam punk theme (dont ask me how that works underwater) as Atlantis was supposebly pretty high tech
    anyhow that was an incredibility long rant that no one probably read so wtv (i like talking to myself
