I envy you for being able to do so many studies. It really hurts somewhere inside not having the time to do at least a couple of different studies per day aside from just drawing for myself. Your studies are fantastic, but i still would love to see more imaginary stuff as well. I really dug the samurai comic page u did, more of those please

Your sketchbook shows real progress; it was great seeing you work on nailing those forms/contours in your line drawings. I also picked up a few pointers/sparks of inspiration about my own process from reading this thread. Thanks!

My only piece of advice would be for your monochromatic studies - and that is to really experiment with your value range. See just how dark and how light you can paint things before they start to look wrong. I'm only just getting to this myself, but have found it to be another useful step on the way to believability.

Hey dude! Been REAL busy, that's why I haven't posted anything yet. I got PLENTY OF UPDATES to come soon. I am currently attending TAD full time so I'm jumping from one assignment to the next all the time.

    Thanks for checking in though.

There's plenty of improvement here. I'm really enjoying those latest figure drawings. You're exploring new mediums with which to draw with, which is a very very good thing. You're using toned paper to serve as a mid tone which is awesome. Is that white chalk you're using? Some of your drawings have proportion issues, but they're looking really good for the most part.

One thing Dorian Iten stresses is getting those early proportional issue figured out before moving to higher stages in a drawing. The approach they've been teaching us at TAD is to 1) check horizontals and verticals (to "frame" the image), 2) then come in with diagonals, 3) then check all your measurements, 4) and to pay very close attention to the light, mid-tone, and shadow shapes. One thing John English mentions over and over again is that an image is essentially an arrangement of shapes. Just hearing him say this has already changed the whole way I look at an image.

I hope this feedback helps. Keep up the good work!

    ART. MORE. NOW.

Sorry to intrude on this thread and comment to Mr.Pryminista (it was perfectly by chance).. but I have to comment that this is some of the exact information I picked up at Barnstone. It's cool to see that others are learning and using this information. (Also you would find horizontals and verticals at regular intervals throughout the subject to establish a rhythm).

the feltip drawing are pretty nices
i think in the last drawings you need to relax before drawing, sometimes it works on me. post 496 seems more relaxed drawings (and prove and u can do better)

    good luck with your next

    Aryeh -

I had to do a double-take...you changed your name

Yeah...muscles are a thing, that exists.

I'm prioritizing the bony landmarks because they dominate the overall form (cranium and jaw).
The muscles can take million different configurations of influence on the planes. So once you
have the framework of the bones you can start layering in the muscles, making decisions about
    where values will go.

    Wow, that was windy...LOL

    Istmin52 -

    You are correct, sir.

    LordVenom -

I was hoping somone would notice the samurai . Its an idea that I had to push out,
been in my head for a while, I've got others too, of course, just need to justify the time

As to studies, its a matter of priority, as you can tell, I don't really spend time on other
kinds of drawing, much. You have so many quick finished pieces..so I can be jealous too

    r-t-a -

    Welcome to my sketchbook!

    Hmm...yeah value contrast...working on it!

    Mr.Pryminista -

    Busy is good.

TAD; awesome, cool. Pick their brains mercilessly.

Yes, proportions before forms...I get all psyched out and forget steps.

MR. Iten is an incredible technician, you'll learn a lot from him...take lotsa notes.

    p sage -

    Not intruding...interjecting! ...or reiterating

Yeah what Pryminista said sounded a lot like Barnston'es approach from the videos I saw.

Since you guys sorta had the same comment I'll reply to both

It seems to me that the TAD has a very fine art and illustration oriented method. Pure image-
making, the construction of single composition for narrative or aesthetic effect. In that world,
its true, everything is just a harmony of colors and shapes.

Most of my self-teaching has been more along a line of analysis, deconstruction, and categor-
ization of forms and materials. This is partly because my mind is obsessed with Form, and also I have
a hard time working with things that I don't understand, that is, completely analyze and capture
    in my mind.

I also see this method as being ideal to create and design things from a concept-art approach.

That being said...good tips, I will re-read what you two just said and analyze it for future use

    zou -

Yeah...you know, its really funny (well, ironic). The better the model, the worse I do, usually. The
model we had that night is pretty lazy, so I wasn't intimidated all, like, "oh God, this pose is awesome,
better not screw up". I could just relax and concentrate. Gotta work on my meditation techniques

    -/-/-

Sorry sorry sorry for not being around. You guys are way too kind and attentive.

Been indulging in my habit of doing a lot of very boring stuff. I have pages of other work
but I won't upload it (now) since its none of it *new*. Really need more focus and momentum

As y'all can see, been hardcore value studying. I received a copy of one of Scott
Robertson's matte rendering DVDs for Chrismas so the clock has been ticking for me
to bite the bullet and develop my lighting and rendering.

Been really honing in on how to choose values on a scale of 10. I think that Loomis's
system (in Creative Illustration) is a bit more true to life.

Swore I wasn't going to give any more critiques but...

<according to some, an unqualified opinion>
Agreed; but the background is drawing too much attention to itself because of the contrast with the tabletop. If the cubes are the subject, they should be the most 'contrasty' elements.

Lovely figure sketches. I particularly like the line quality in the last set. There's probably about only 3 figures I can see at the moment that's not proportionate. Other than that, no crits from me.

    Heya Bludhund,

Your powerful and insightful comments forced me to check out your thread, not to mention the fact I don't want to slay a kitten.

There's some pretty bad ass stuff happening in here. But the construction confuses me, it looks like you're more than capable of not relying on methods, like you could just throw down the pain without needing a system. You just aren't.

Trust yourself to make the marks you want to without putting in all the extra gibberish. It starts to be a crutch, after awhile, you just have to drop it and believe you can walk without it.

Hopefully, you've got an update brewing.

Oh you might want to check out Scott Robertson gnomon dvd on value scales and shading basic forms. I saw it a friends out it has a unique numbering system. He even uses post it notes to help him shade blocks or vehicles.

The conteur figure drawings are my favorite out of that set.

I've got a gigantic pile of life drawings that need to be scanned.

    Oh wow, a grognard!

    Thanks!

Hmm...the construction marks...yeah a lot of times its not strictly necessary
for the drawing itself. More a combination of analysis and trying to really
    always think form.

But yeah, definitely too rote/mindless some time I'm kind re-evaluating/
refining my process right now, too, so we'll see where that goes.

Hehe. Actually that was the impetus for this values work, I got the 2nd
rendering DVD for Christmas, and it was time to bite the bullet .

I love Scott's DVDs on form construction and vehicles...they were a crucial
wake-up call for my art. You could say they changed my life...

However I found his system for assigning values a bit weird and abstract.
Lots of great pointers on technique but the 'halfway to black' method didn't
    really make sense to me.

hey man thx for posting in my sketchbook i really admire ur anatomy studies, i should probably do more of that stuff. i notice with the face studies the eyes are always a little big, which people have but not all people. i think artists tend to subconsciously integrate their own features in the characters they make sometimes. neway, keep up the good work dude!

Wow hombre! I leave for a little bit and come back to some interesting stuff. Your studies have become very "cubic" (I think that is the word for it). I really like this stuff. People seem to take on linear forms less organic and more "mathematic" .... hard to find the words for the difference but I do like it.

Thanks, yeah I do tend to make them kinda big.

I don't think its really a self-incorporating thing...hehe my eyes look big in that photo because of the 'MySpace Effect'.
Photographing yourself at arms length causes a warping that makes your features look bigger. Cameras DO lie

    liquidjack -

Thanks. Yeah, playing around with trying to get the sense of 3D and direction (which way is this leg pointing, for example).

    Jason Scanlon -

its not quite up to 8 inches yet...

Hehe been doing a lot more reading and writing, actually. Trying to get my 'big picture' priorities in order. But don't worry,

Looking good, my man. Your lines are kicking ass, and your figures are looking volumetric.

    Waiting for more.

    Yo yo yo!

    I'm back!

I read that you have been doing more writing and reading, working on the 'big picture' in life. That's excellent! We all need to do that from time to time. It's something that I've been doing myself while attending TAD. What kind of literature are you reading at the moment? Maybe we could exchange material.

Anyways, I was wondering, what other mediums do you use?

Only crit I got now is not to use straight lines in the shadows. If you're going to work in line, follow the contours of the form in the shadows. This will give the form a more 3D feel. Perhaps you sketched quickly due to time constraints, which is understandable, but in the future really push yourself to follow the shadow forms with your lines instead of straight lines to block in values.

    Keep rockin dude!
