When hatching, sweep and curve more with your stylus (in portraiture at any rate). Then you punctuate form and dimension with sharp straight aways. Quick improvement, too (very good).

I guess one thing I might say, Justin, is that when you're doing more detailed shadings, go for tidier and more uniform hatchings. Like you did in this one.
    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1161116672

Of course I can't really tell if you were going for the general impression, or more detailed depictions.

I like this one the best btw, why did you rework it?

    Joostin!

Did I ever tell you that you have a really awesome way of rendering? I know you'll hate this comparison, but it does remind me of Marko's stuff. Hows your portfolio coming along? Gonna post 'er when you're done?

Making progress Justin, keep up the studies.
Im glad to see longer studies, values are looking better, just make sure to push the darks a tad more here and there. Faces have gotten way better too, and are moving away from your own features more now.
I like the direction your designs are moving in. Your specific designs are improving a lot on the abstract level, but could use refinement on the conceptual level. I know that oftentimes its better to play around or make something that looks cool, but Id also like to see more concepts that are refined technically and could actually exist if you know what i mean.
Hatching is improving, getting less messy for the most part. Those two reffed drawings (face and figure) are great, that hand got messy from too much crosshatching, which created smears and a texture that doesnt belong.
The head plane study has a lot of the right stuff in place, but your verticals are too exagerrated so the planes curve too much.
If youre going for foundation stuff (something i myself am getting back into) do some more of the "boring" stuff too, long studies from life, detailed anatomy studies, composition and colour studies, thumbnails, grayscale paintings etc should all be covered too.
Keep up the blind contours, i think theyre helping you a lot!

While everyone is posting just wanted to put up my Xmas card.

Haven't been drawing much the last week, my parents have kept me busy all the time and I have been sick since 2 tuesdays ago. Also, not being around people makes it hard for me to draw... I still don't have a car, and my bike tire is broken (otherwise I'd totally ride my bike to the mall each day).

Great job with the face studies! Going from workshop photos? I think i recognize Andrew and Jason?
Suit of armor is looking good, now try doing it again, but hatching across the form, not with it, so see the difference. You'll get the roundness to read better.

I like the armour guy. Faces too, especially the very sparse shading on the self-potrait?
    Anyway, keep it up.

Awesome! but man, slow down! The hatching is next to terrible! Just spend some more time, hey, we had this LOOOONG loooong conversation yesterday
about how to motivate your self as much as you can and to stay focused to improve.. and this sketch is awesome, I mean, GOOD observations.
But... Could you be able to re-create it without a reference ?
I did this drawing of an armour just a few weeks ago... Its ugly, but man, I can see that drawing sooooo clear whenever i want in front of me.. not the "drawing " it self, but the material, and how it was rendered. I spend 2 hours on it. I doubt you spend 1 hour on yours. Im not judgeing you or anything..
But I know you have TONS of potential, and you are not even useing half of it! The portrait you did, show your potential very good, Im talking about these coro and jason one, I saw who it was LIKE THAT! that means you are a good observer, and you are good at getting it down on paper, but , it doesnt matter in the long run if you dont slow down and think of what your doing.
Really, when you doing studies, do it that good and take that long time , so you can re-create it after wards without a reference! thats the purpose, to expand your visual library, dont limit your self, use your potential!

Keep it up, your improvement from your last book's first page, to this one is damn awesome =) just keep drawing , and TAKE YOUR TIME, it wont kill you.

I love all of your studies you have here!
Especially the blind contours! I have done so many of those, I just am too shy to post them!
    Great pieces!
I would have to say though, I would def. enjoy more animals in here!
The evil poochy you have towards the top is great!

Damn thats a sexy colour job. Good job with the lighting/value range, dont like whats going on along the bottom though, its all too dark/murky alltogether, so it draws no interest in the composition. Look at it smaller like a thumbnail and you'll see what i mean. I'd increase contrast/bounce light along the bottom to get more interest/edge separation inthere.

The thing he is holding looks really effective in the zoomed out shot! And I love his tigerskin waist jacket thing. His sword look liek it is stabbing into himself though.

We went out shopping.. had enough gift money to get Black, white, and Burnt sienna, with 2 synthetic filberts, but not enough for some medium. So now I can't use 'em.

    Anyways, tonights stuff.

    Hey man, how's things?
Your really making progress here, I can tell. The polo figure is great, amazing lighting and colors. cheers to that!
I think you could do more full-sized bodies though, proportions sometimes lacking. This last study of the naked man looks good, colors looking cool, but his legs are way off tho. There a bit too short I'd say.
Anyways great progress, as I said, keep it up - I check this thread regularely.

Lookin at your other thread i see you had trouble with the legs, which reinforces my point that this area is the weakest in the composition.

The master/torso study looks good colourwise, though you went into the smaller brushstrokes too soon i think, the arm looks splotchy. You gotta get out of that hatching habbt of yours, you're not Leyendecker quite yet.

the last pencil study of the girl (from anatomy for the artist?) is looking really really rushed and messy...

haha digging the black band on your hand studies, I tend to include it in my own too

Great progress going on here! The faces from the Insomania pictures came out particularly well.
The Marco Polo piece is looking great, but I'm going to be nit-picky and say that on the hand holding the astrolabe the fingers might be a tad short, but I didn't even notice it except in the close-up. A quick rule of thumb is that the length of the middle finger is the same as the distance from the knuckle to the wrist.
Keep up the great work! I'll have to start coming here more often!

Hey dude. The schoolies v non schoolies challenge piece is great! The ONLY thing that bothers me is his left arm. It seems a tiny bit thin and wobly. Maybe it's just me hehe. Your studies are awesome dude... and now that you've got those damn loomis books they can only get even more awesomer! Can't wait to see how you start with the oils!

Oh and hope you have a sweet 2007 and had a great xmas dude.

Cool studies, the first render looks kickass, great job with the value scheme, isnt at all messy either. Keep it up!

2 crits = Work on lessy hairy lines on your studies from life (your torso studies) and study the chin/jaw structure more, its the one thing where youre getting no variation (and to a small degree noses as well)
