Lightbulb Justin's Sketches (update on last page)

    VELCOME:

Alrighty... I realized I haven't been drawing as much as I should, and I realized it's because of my little arrogant "I'm special and don't feel like making a sketchbook" thing, so get your shoes ready, I can already feel the butt-kicking begin.

(GO TO LAST PAGE FOR BEST RESULTS! SATISFACTION NOT GUARANTEED, CRITICISM ENCOURAGED)

Well, here we go!- Maybe I will put more recent stuff up tonight.

hooray, i get your sb virginity!
Those characters are great man, the anatmy is tops.
Just be wary of line quality, strong lines beat rough lines anyday.

ANyway, hope you got over that "rough" period and back to drawing your heart out!

    hey justin!
Good stuff going on. The anatomy looks good. nothing to crit for the moment.
Just got a question, how do you pick the colors and from where do you start when you do a colored portrait (like the sp you did) ?
Im kinda lost when i'm doing one, and since you handle them pretty well, i thought you could give me some directions... :>
Anyway, keep up the good work !

hey man, really nice stuff! I thought I'd seen that self portrait before but I wasn't sure where; went and checked the sp subforum and I didn't see Pixel's Portrayals.. didn't realize you had changed your forum name either way man nice to see a sketchbook; I really like the small figures you did near the bottom, great form on all of em. gotta say you seem to have a really nice confident line in your drawings. either way man keep it up! I'll try to stop by from time to time.

Well, if I recall I started off with lines, very very thick ones (see bottom of the shoulder) and just blocked in general areas of shadow, then I chose an approximate skintone, and went from there. I would change the saturation and value as I went along, I didn't color pick much. It's not my favorite SP, but it looks the most like me. (still does.)

@Tigermilk: Thanks for the comment! =)

@Onir: Thanks for the compliments, I stopped by your book already ;]

    Awesome, finally.
My suggestion would be to try out more swooshy lines with gestures as they are kind of linear now, but it's just personal preference.

    @Marley: Thanks dude!

    @PHATandy
: Plenty of sketches to spare my frien'!

    @Greensock
: I got some good Hi-res movie shots, and you will see studies of them pop up once in a while. I have 1 finished charcoal still life which is about.. damn, had to be over 10 hours for sure, it's 18x24, but it's at school. I am working on one in Colored pencil (Teacher made me) which is also 11x24, which is taking even longer than the charcoal one, and I will be working on an Illustration for Dante's Inferno, Cantos XXIV (24)- as soon as I read the damn thing. THIS is why I love my art class. I actually have as much time as I need to get shit done! It's just too bad I am in the back corner of a beginning class, all they do is talk!

    @Max
: Thank you, I need to do more and increase my mental vocab. Those all seem repetative and cliche, I gotta start doin tons of em.

Update!!! Small though... like I said, I have TONS of school work, and noone models for me =( But hey, it's my last year here. Then I will be joining some of you someplace... can't wait.

Good to hear on the longer studies. Cant wait to see em posted! WIsh we did fun 10+ hour things back when i was in highschool (haha first time ive said "back when i was in highschool" yay for getting old!)
this is badass, now transfer that quality over to your imagination and life work and you'll be kicking some serious ass.
Last couple of pages of character-type stuff has been looking pretty repetitive imo, unless youve been working on designing one particular character i think youre working yourself into a sketch formula. Get outta that right away! Pick a different area of study to push yourself in to freshen up, something as simple as a temporary focus on the way a body part (i focused on the shoulders until recently, now im looking at the pelvis and its relation to the shoulders and the twist of the spine) creates mood action and characterization was enough for me to get outta that.

Haven't really gotten in any "formula" that I have noticed, haven't drawn characters too much actually, but today I just tried to do stuff randomly and think about stuff while drawing like a nut (1st/2nd page)

The first 2; No ref fun! Last 2, from life. only 4 pages?? School is sapping my time, but I garuntee next year (when I have everything out of my way) you'll see alot more of me, as will I

EDIT: The bottom sketch isn't fully rendered by any means- just as a note- It was on the bus so I never really got a chance to fill out the values.

Sketches yesterday are great, first and second ones definitely. Underlighting on the 5th one is convincing even at this stage, well done.
I remember my father told me "watch professionals play tennis long enough and you'll get better even if its not immediately noticable to you."
I would say replace "play tennis" with "on conceptart", and you're a great example of that...... you're clearly improving with almost every post.
You also practice a lot and (of course) thats the important part.
Send me a message when you get that driver's license~*

Ok, I dunno what you want crits on, but I try to go from start!
In your first post, you got really nice portraits on all the characthers,
On your self-portrait though ( I guess its a self portrait???) the
eyes , at least to me, very small, or at least a little bit to small
on your small portrait on the top, you have been really nice on the line-economy side
    thats a good one!
On the black/grey/white thing to the lower left, you been really good
on the black/white values, but you have really "fucked up" the piece by adding some
very unnessesary highlights! I know people use to draw different when useing
pencils/pens and stuff analog, and useing other techniques when going digital
and its nice to see you mixed em both up though in the piece I last mentioned!
The SpaceShip thing is nice, and its coll that you didnt used ANY #000000 for it,
I hate pure black, and have abused it WAY to much in my own pieces, and have
got way to much negative feedback on it, sometimes black is good, but never
as pure as #000000 its good for leading the eye to points , such as the focial points
although, other objects in the pieces should do that just fine without any black
*Now im just talking general and not about your piece, so back to your piece again!!*
I love the way you did the cockpit, the colours are so nice, and so is the reflection
I can see you really thought of how it should look!!
Nice one, the colours on the overall piece is pretty good, not awsome, and
it isnt giving the piece a good mood, it could look way better, right now
"just painted" and it isnt giving it a nice look , uhm, I know its not finished
or anything, and theres a clear look of WORK IN PROGRESS in the picture, but it would be really cool
to put a way more desaturated colour in the backgroudn , and give the space ship/airplane
some more focus! You have already done that, I mean giveing it focus
by blurring the background alittle, but it would be cool with MORE focus on it! imho..

    *****Post#3*******

Its nice to see you going for anatomy, although, the "gap" after the biceps looking
kinda odd in your anatomy studie, Im aware of that people with short muscle-attachment
may look like that, but its very unusual, On the small studie above the rendered
one, it looks alot more 'normal' Try to fill the whole page with alot of arms
and when your done, try to connect it to etc the body, its 'in most cases' not
the certain part that looks out of proporations, it use to be when
its connected to something else, like, the lower leg, and the uper-leg looks
very good next to eachother , but when you put em on a torso/arms and stuff
it use (if you havent practised enough) abit out of place/proporations, so
practise the whole thing in one!! and now I dont mean you shouldnt draw anatomy
with whole bodies all time, I just mean that you should remember to connect
it to the body afterwards you've studied it!

I love when people doing thumbs!! Makes me soo wanna go draw on something!
Just remember to not focus on anything by doing em, just work the design out
or the sillhoute out if thats what you focus on, never go on
details, I would advice takeing a serious work in (by working with thumbs)
    Into 3 parts,
1** Focus on the sillhoute, make a few of em, 12 - 20 something
2** Choose one of the sillhoutes that looking cool, work out a few designs, and just
give im a touch of design!
3** Take a few of the designs and work em out, this time alittle bigger so you can
get the details there! I know you will like some of those, and now you can go for a finished design
or piece overall! just some tips, may sound odd from someone like me though.

I guess the pices in the third piece is done from life, good! Its nice to mix
it up! Just try to keep the line-economy like you did in your thumbs and it will look
really awsome, right now its alittle messy, nothing wrong with it, but theres different
with messy, and messy, messy could be 'messy' with nice line quality, and it could
aswell means 'messy' with alot of lines everywhere and theres no way to see whats what!
Right now it looks 'messy' in a good way! Just think about the economy of the lines as I said!
    The Vehicle looks nice though!

On the fourth and fifth piece, try to block out the facials ! Its not often you
do a connected body WITH portrait on, try to make it a good habit man, just a tip from me
Although, these to papers are looking good, keep it up!References are awesome!
I dunno about the sixth piece, it looks mostly like un-serious doodles , I dunno
if they worth crits ? The guys hands looks good though!
**Gestures looking way good! you competed in the gesture Thunderdome ? You should !!
Nice sence of action in them, once again, thumbs makes me wanna go draw, cause it gives you
    1000000 of idéas!nice!!
Download a martial art video or something, theres alot of poses you could capture in them, and it would help
you to bring the stiffness that some of your characthers acctually have..

    Nice perspective exercises! No crits!

    *****Post#7******

Well, its cool, but it sint amazing to me, I know you could do better, especially all these black
lines is destroying the pic for me! Try to work out every brush stroke you do, im thinking
of the lines / colours of the head and wings of that bird, although the bird got a cool
look!! Go for Prom's tutorial here http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/main.php?id=ps55paint
and here : http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm these are soo worth gold for painting!
Im not saying your bad at it, its just that you dont get your colours down as cool
as I know you could (and have done!!)
    Keep at it!

    *****Post#13******
To start of here, that first portrait os one of the coolest things in here! really good values
especially on the chin! good one! not to over-worked eighter, just very smooth! cool!!!
Piece Two and Three cool, but i would say, get nire if these enviroment thumbs down, as mentioned
they are very inspiring, and your good at it! so show your good sides even if its best
to attack the weakest parts mostly! once again, I can see you doddled mostly
in these, so not much to crit, just wanna write down my thoughts about em!
The third piece is cool though! nice portraits, keep those up, and enlarge em as you go!
Nice use of greyscales in the fourth piece! I think you should
do the same when its comeing to coloured pieces, try convert it to greyscales , since you greyscale/b&w work
is stronger!convert it to greyscales to check if the values looks good! keep it in mind, and dont
forget to always mirror your pieces, just small notes from me, because these 2 tips always help to improve mistakes!
As for the 3 characthers at the bottom, cool, I start with the first one
*1* Nice lighting, it feels a bit flat, get more values in there, i see you have defined a clear light source,
keep to it! and never go pure black!!!!!! damnit I know its lineart this time, i just want it to get to ya !
Ohwell, get some values in there and it will improve alot! and take your time, dont rush!
*2* good, but far from as good as the first one! i see you used multiply, right ? Try to have a clean
lineart sketch first ! or the work you do over/under the line will still look abit crappy whatever its done awsome or not!!
    Cool pose!
    *3*
Nice pose, and also, good way of useing line-economy! take your time again, dont rush damnit!

I dont know if its the scanner or something, but all the nice darkness dissapeard in all the artworks
presented in post 18! Get some 2B / 3B / 4B in there! Looks HB all the way man!
First page, Awsome poses, work them out! you got em there, now get an A4 and work something out from them! I especially
like the guy in the middle! Would love to see it digital coloured!
Page2 Nice improvement already on the poses, doesnt look stiff = good ! Good designs aswell

    flatliner:Thanks man!!!

DanielC: Thanks Dan, I will work on that.

Sartell: Thanks Sartell, it might take a while though, we get our 1st quarter report cards on Monday... and due to the staff giving me unecessary classes and screwing up my schedule, I missed a bunch of days' worth of classes, and was always like 4 assignments behind. So I'll be grounded for a while...

    BloodBrush: Can't wait to seeum!

    Listing: Same to you!

Woooooop. Biiig post. Alrighty, I'll commend your efforts by returning the favor Friday night. Thanks for all the words, they really come in handy! I appreciate every letter.

Updates; Crippity crap for some reason- I don't know why, but I found ZERO time to draw today, during lunch I was pulling my hair out.. I must have ripped out at least 3 pages because some pen drawings I was doing just didn't work at all. I did 1 on the bus, some hawks when I got home, 2 thumbs, and some random abstractions to pull design stuff out of- I also did an anatomy/color study of a really popular Domai pic. Really rough, 20 mins maybe. a bit saturated compared with the ref, but that doesn't matter much, if anything it's a good sign for me.

I like the colors on the naked chick. Her waist can be trimmed a bit, to get torso and hips to read as two forms, also will make her hips look a lil wider so she'll look younger, she's looking middle aged currently. Another tip is that if you taper a womans legs from top to bottom you'll get them to look more feminine, sort of like what's happening on her left leg but not so much on her right, pay attention to that next time you're looking at a chick with nice legs. Other than that I think you're doing a hell of a job.

Glad to see the female nude, you do a lot of male studies in sketching and girls don't seem to get as much attention. In contrast to the above comment, I would like to commend the stomach you drew. It makes perfect sense that someone with such developed rectus abdominals would also have substantial transverse abs and lateral obliques. Slicing off someone's waist doesn't make them look younger, it makes them look like they spend all day lying in bed.

hey Justin, nice updates; loove the faces and figures you drew a few posts ago, really nicely put to together. as others have said you have a really nice way of drawing males so it's nice to see a female in the mix. The form on her is really nice all around... body parts are a little thick and slightly off in relation to the body, but I'd assume that's because you did it really quickly. either way keep up the good work man!

oh and I said it in reponse to ya in my sketchbook, but just incase ya don't see it, I love your ssg name lol and the lens flares are a nice touch

Hey man, nice mixture of studies and imagination in here. It's good to see you working in black and white along with color. Yo' digi. skillz are getting up there too, nice work on the Domai study. If I could give one crit about that would be to watch out for using the stylus the way you use the pencil. You can see that the marks you're making are highlights on the body. [example on her left leg and stomach] But it doesn't translate well onto the screen, atleast for the texture of human skin. I remember Coro saying "squiggly lines = technology", and in this case they equal highlights. I'm guilty of it as well, it's all about getting used to painting digitally; so no worries. Hope that made sense. Cheers man.
