you are meticulous in your studies! I'm kind of fond of the way you experiment with alchemy (that looks strange written down) and really like the 3D faces, too. be nice to see some doodles of imagination too

    gutss : Thanks!
monotony : More too come, that is for sure!
bigfooTrooper : Thanks mate, glad to hear that!

Ok. So Mr TheGnoll contacted me the other night. He is another sucker that has fallen for Alchemy. And he liked the little exercises I have been doing, so he suggested we switched alchemy sketches and worked the values on eachothers ideas! His sketches are insane! I feel like I am destroying his art, but it's a great motivation too, so here is nr 1. Make sure that I still don't consider this as a final yet!

TheGnoll : We have to keep doing these! Though I gotta work harder on my alchemy sketches to try and get them in your league!
PieMonster : Thanks mate, its always great to hear I'm pushing forward instead of backwards!

I might fiddle with it some more, but I am pretty happy the way it is. When I saw Gnoll's sketch I immediately thought of this guy to be a pale skinned arctic creature that lives in some cave up in the mountain. Hope I managed to create that effect.
Now I'm quickly going to start roughing in the values on the next one while I wait for the next 15min to pass before I have to run to work!

Nice sketchbook, like that you post the sketches besides the finished work on some of your creature stuff. Lots of monochrome stuff though, you mostly interested in form im guessing?

Jofx : Thanks mate. Well the reason for that is because my art really lacks value. One of my weakest points you could say. So I'm hitting the nail with the hammer

I've been so busy lately. And I don't think it will slow down much these next weeks. So I have to keep pushing myself! Next update will contain more!

I agree with Jens. also you could add values to the sketch strokes, i think that would make even the sketches be more than just sketches.
i was drawing with a very hard pencil at school one day and the teacher copied (copy machine) it and upped the contrast so that the values were seen better, really improved my sketch, he wanted me to use soft pencils instead of hard ones just for that reason...

like the light reflection in the shadows the most in your last drawing

thanks for dropping by my SB.
since we are talking about strokes and values, i think an issue here could be the use.of.strokes.while.shading. You tend to use a lot of soft brushes and the forms seem more blurry or flat than .. well, forms. Go with more variation.. Almost always you can back up a soft stroke with a hard one, if a soft shadow comes about, it usually ends in a sharp edge - example; butt crack. now there is some study for ya

Hey man there is an abundance of great stuff going on in this thread. Just keep working.

oh yeah I love most of your zbrush work. how long on average does it take you to do them. I have had a little dabble at zbrush myself. Its great for quickly playing with shapes but when I really wanted something realistic, it was pretty time consuming for a while.

Jens : thank you! totally noted your suggestions. I guess I struggled a lot with the values in that one because I'm not to sure how to portray pale-white skin with grey-values. Gotta work more on that. Thanks again!

Jofx : Ah, but you see, these are colabs with Gnoll. We create sketches in alchemy, exchange and paint the values. It's a learning process. Mostly for me -keep an eye on his sketchbook for the update. They are looking awesome!

eparts : argh this critique haunts me. It's one of the reasons I started working with values. I have to concentrate more on it. Thanks for reminder. -Buttcracks it is then! (eventually...)

Jofx : But you only posted one!

TheGnoll : Right back at you mate

AK86 : None of them went over an hour. But several of them (not all) I started off by using a plain headmodel that I found on pixelogics website. Go get! And play with them. You learn the program even faster! -well, I did.

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN : Thanks mate. I agree a little, but I really want to be able to draw without textures also. So practice practice practice!

    bharat : Thanks!

Chupacabra : Thank you! I can say the same to yours! -even though I haven't commented in your SB yet.. YET!

Been sooo busy lately guys. You have no idea... But have been doing some in between. I'll try to show more interesting stuff as soon as possible. Right now, only crap. Gotta push more!

Ok guys. Gonna try and post more often. Thoooough, I'm busy with some different things and styles and, ect. For now this polar bear is all I feel like uploading. Nothing grand, but I like it anyways. More animal studies like this one coming. I believe trying different approaches really open the mind to new things, which will help me find my own style.
Anyways..... GO CHECK OUT TheGnoll's SKETCHBOOK!

(yes, I only updated my SB tonight because I wanted to mention him..)

    Hi Hive

First of all your weapons are not half as bad a syou think. They could be more original, but I mean you can only do as many weapon variations.
I like your Warhammer Death Korps pictures, though on the half Korps the stretched arm looks weird, rather short, perhaps because the figure itself has a large head to begin with and you somehow translated it to your drawing.
Your digital painting study isn't bad, but it looks flat due to the lack of different colours and shades. Keep me updated on that one and push yourself with it.

    Cheers

Edit: Oh god sorry, I somehow just saw your first sketchbook page. Thou art amazing. The progress is clearly visible and you give me hope that by doing I can achieve a lot.

    Cheers, the second

sweet stuff man, I can see the improvements happening! for your values, try not to make your shadows too dark, keep them "breathable" and have a bit more contrast between your midtones and highlights

keep up the hardwork! its paying off!

I did another one of these quick studies when I came home. Like doing these. Doing different stuff, but no showing what right now. Gotta do some schoolwork before I head off to work. Laters

Oh btw. I got myself a iMac Love this thing. Gotta get used to it though, and learn Painter in it
