Ahw man I started too late .

So I had to 'sacrifice' two nights of sleep to make mine(after finding out what the competition really was like), only to find out that it sucks compared to the rest...

    Rematch?

Heheh, you've got some very nice pieces here! I voted for Marthe because of the great mood in his(hers?) piece. 8)
Kristel's image is very nice too, and very funny, only if there wasn't that text...
Yokal's one caught my eye too, strong attempt at complicated composition, keep workin on that!
Alex gets bonus point for including titties, but next time use some reference, i'm sure you can find plenty of it even on your own HD, at least I know I have.
Swendly, very heroic and stuff, good lightning too! The green "sky" or whatever isn't needed tho imho.

Hey wait a second, I thought this was a battle only for the recruitment of the Concept Art group, then are Ward and Marthe competing? I thought you two already were in the group.

The Sacrifice Battle was open for everybody, not just people who wanted to join the concept art group. We'll make sure that the voting will be fair.

lol, whats this "concept art group" ?

Not to be mean, but some of this peaces looks like "WHOA I GOT PHOTOSHOP ; NOW LETS PLAY!!!!"

and..wouter, I dunno, but that piece is kinda...touching, in a bad way somehow.. maybe im just to sensitive, but I really dont understand whats the point of "sacrifice" and wtc, and a damn pilot thats dead ?...

I just think its stupid..but yeh, maybe im just to sensitive..

EDIT* Lol, this post really sounded negative 100% , I dont mean everybody looks like "I got photoshop-thingy" some of those are really nice done, and
I dont have any clue of how long the deadline, time was really, so I cant say anything more

Heh, next time I compete I am going to start earlier than this (hopefully the subject will be easier). Anyways, my vote goes to Marthe and Ward, both pieces look excellent. Anyways, good work everyone! There are some really excellent pieces in here.

    to Dile:

First of all, if you're here to tear down people's pieces, don't...
If you want to be constructive in your criticism, please do.

and second: it's pretty obvious what the sacrifice is in Wouter's piece, it's the terrorist giving his live for a goal he believes in. Maybe it's too controversial for you, but that doesn't take away that he executed the assignment just fine.

I did see you edited your post, but I still wanted to let you know this.

We all registered, since we are the ones who made this art, and by 'he executed the assignment perfefectly' I meant wouter by doing his piece.

I don't think I really speak spanish or anything, so please read carefully.

Hello Dile, I've been here longer then you (although less posty/spammy), and I'm also a contestant of this ("Pepijn"). So maybe you'll trust me more?
    Post count isn't anything btw.

SlaQ: man, seriously, if you mean that the terrorist executed the assignment just fine...then you are pretty fucked up, and whats up man ? you registered just to say that ?
Heh no, he maybe worded it wrongly. What he ment to say is that the artist followed the given subject: "The sacrifice" just fine.

And please be more open to other people's opinions and perspectives.

And all those nicknames looks alittle fishy to me ? never seen such a combo with names before..
Are you guys from some other forum ? you did never answered my question !!

We're all from an education/college/school/whatever you would call it in english. And it's about Game Design and Development, here there are some students who founded a certain concept art group to give more attention to development in that area.

This is a 'battle' to be accepted to that group.

Jochem: Or who ever you are, thats pretty fucked up aswell...
You obviously dont know what critism is, and you obviously havent looked around on the forum much..

Constructive critisism is never just blatantly saying someone 'sucks at photoshop'. It is building up from comments and pointers to help the person who made it to improve himself.
Saying someone he sucks isn't going to help improve himself.

If you'd have been around longer here at CA you would have known that.

(post later with C&C for everyone, yes even you Ward and Marthe, if you like it or not)

May we remind everyone that this is an art-contest. That means you should vote for the DRAWING you like the most, not the PERSON you like the most. It's a shame some of you didn't understand that.

Shit man, did I said any of these pics sucked ? I didnt!!! Iwasnt even near saying that! and I didnt said that all users had like 1-4 post, i said MOST had,
man, im really sorry that you are reading inbetween the lines, i havent said any of that shit your saying I was, I never gave any critism, and I never said!
It was Jochem who said that I was giving critism, and I said he didnt know what
it was if he think that was critism, really sorry for the confusion, I really dont
think any of those pieces is BAD!!! But, just a few miniutes more on those, and they would have turned out so much better aswell, I meant, by saying "whoo I got photoshop" that some of the pieces seems like dodged and burned and some of them seems like based on NO fundamentals at all!
Like when you where younger, and should draw in school, "draw a spaceship!!" How many based that spaceship on cubes, spheres, though about composition, colours, perspective ? How many tried to give that space
ship a mood ? Not many , it mostly turned out as a "spaceship" and only that, it was recognizeable as a spaceship, but it didnt looked amazing!
Some of the pieces in this thread is somehow the same [and arghh if you take me wrong on this!!] I dont mean any of those looks done of a kid, they are good that way, I just , tried to explain my opinion in a way that some people at least should have understod, but NO, you just read inbetween the lines , and told people to ignore me, shit...Again, Im sorry!

*Just wanna clearify* I dont mean that users with 1-5 post isnt welcome
or isnt good in anyway, I just though, it was just a natural feeling, that it was somekind of spam, or that you had comeing from another small/local forum
to show off! its still nothing wrong with users with small post count, Im posting daily on this forum, and I visit it at least 5-10 times a day, And i think
because of that, im been improveing a hell lot over the 8 months or whatever it is, im been here!!

Ohwell, I voted for the picture at the top, David, really nice one I must say
and I was really hit by the "sarcifice" of it, really nice man!
To critique the picture, you have lost alot of your form by only
blocking in 3 colors on each form, try to establish more form by trying to block
it up in segments, check other armour pages to see what I mean, although
I dont think that bring the whole picture down or something, just something
to consider when drawing next time
Also the textures on the plate isnt looking that good, I think you could have used another texture!
The shadows on the ground for the guys standing far awy is really bugging me,
Maybe you should try to loose it down alittle, just now they are VERY visible, and it looks like you didnt put any work behind em!
The towers could alos need some work!
Otherwise, nIce picture man! as I said, I voted for ya!!

**********Crits for other people in here***********

Kjell: I must say I dont like the colours of the background, try to block in some more high tech stuff in there maybe use some sort of abstract brush
and let yourself be surprised! I always do that to come up with forms and shapes I havent seen yet! Some of the robots could use alittle more work, but as I have already said, I dont have a clue about how long time you guys
had on the pictures at all! Good work !
Upps, one more thing, I think you should practise more anatomy!
it isnt bad, but it isnt beliveable eighter really, but maybe that was the
    style you aimed for ?

Marthe: This is one of the pictures I liked the best, colour wise!
Really nice, and its easy to understand the sarcrifice of it, good work!
Good anatomy ! You could have worked some more on the details, and to get more colours in there, I see you got potential to do that!

Jabbe: I dunno really, you could have done sooo much more to this one
although I dont know what potential you have , since I havent seen any of
    your other pictures!
One thing must be to draw a line outside the windows to make that "I used the ereaser to get rid of the rest of the drawing-lines" to get away!
    Keep it up man!

Ward: I was supposed to vote for ya, but I think you got
some problems with the scales, I see you useed perspective, thats a good
thing to acctually handle the scales! Ohwell, exept for that, the colours are alright, and the perspective aswell, work some on the line economy!
I see you aimed for a kinda Industrial feeling of your work, thats why i said that, right ??

Sam; that soldier is really off, and why didnt you let it stay in pencil ?
the rest is really good, but that destroy the entire picture!

Pep: Good work on the creatures, I dont see the sacrifice thing in this one though, although it got nice colors, work more on the mood though, and in an enviroment, the colors are ALWAYS more desatureated in the background, so it is in reality!

Yokal: Nice piece, Next time, try to fix the contour between that black and
the acctual pencil sketch, looking good otherwise!

Floris: Nice handle of textures! really diggin that "creature"
although, work on your forms more, you lossing alot of it , and it looks very
flat !!!The lower part of the picture is pretty nice color wise!
The girl thats going to be sacrificed could need some more attention, therefor, the composition is kinda bad, it looks like that its the creatures lower part that want attention right now!
    Keep it up man!

Kristel: All I can say is : COOL and good work man!
    bit funny

Norbi: In your picture, theres to much black, And *I* Dont see the sacrifce
pattern in yours ? I dont know much bout nights and that shit, maybe
thats why! also , by useing to much black, as you have done, you loseing your forms
    ALOT!!
Otherwise, its nice, reminds me of Prince of Persia..

Michael: Nice pic, you lost alot of the forms by doing that texture, that way!
Try to think 3D next time! and take your time with the textures , its not gonna harm you, just gonna make your picture llook soo much better!
The sacrifce part is really well read !!

Maxine: The worst thing with this picture is that he is showing his back, and
it more looks like "Have a good time at the vaccation" more then its looking sad, thats because the guy wearing that type of clothes, and because he seem to be glad
    Keep at it!

Wouter: you know it, although, I think your picture is one of the best renderd once in here! alot of photoshop effects or what to call it, but its looking good anyways!

Jochem; really nice picture, the dark in the background of one of the pics isnt doing him any good, although is good rendered, the arm anatomy doesnt look
very beliveable though, but overall its good, although, I cant see the sacrifce part really, even by reading the text!

Tyhem: nice way of working with textures man! and cool picture aswell!
the dragon/creature is a bit flat overall, exept for that its cool, try to establish a dominant lighsource when starting out!

Bor: WHY ? yeah , why ? I dont see it, although, thats nothing to hung up on, since its a concept art piece, it could be sooo many reasons, good work man! try to get your facials down alittle more next time!

Swedly: nice picture, really likeing it all, one of those i though voteing for!
The colours are nice, but you been useing to much dark, its nice to see it isnt black though, keep it up man!

Alex: nice use of textures, i just have one crit, and thats : what is the sacrifice in that picture ? Ps. Work on anatomy/facials!

Joris: ???? I have no clue...

Ohwell, thats it, im not an expert, this is just MY crits, im just trying to help after makeing such a mess for ya

Hey man, I can understand what you mean when im reading my post, it was more to express my opinion, sure it was done in a kinda bad way maybe, but man, I never meant to be offensive or mean in anyway!
Im very positive to the whole thing, i guess i was just confused over that users I have never seen, with very "un-nickish-names" came in here posting art, I was just thinking it was some sort of spam I guess, im really sorry over that, and my confusion that maybe lead to my angry mode, sorry!

However, Im very glad that this [hopefully] have turned out ok ? right ?
and thanks for your words I cant say all the crits are 100% valid, but I guess they are at least something to work on! and sure, if you comes back here in a month on your next project/assignemt thing, I be sure comeing in and get some crits for ya!

*I* However would like to have alittle info about this concept art group !
Its a school ? its about 20 neighbours loveing art ? its about some forum ?
wheres this from ? Just some quick info would be cool

    Thanks!

My apoligies dile, I misjudged you too...First I really want to thank you for your advices. We are first year students at the highschool of Arts (Gamedesign and Devellopment) in Hilversum, the Netherlands. This is a just a contest for everyone who studies gamedesign here. Marthe and Ward are already in this concept art group and will also be the judges in this contest.

The concept art group at the gamedesign include just a few guys and one girl who are really passionate about concept art and draw on regular bases. Every month or so there is a contest and every week an assignment. With the art we made this time they will pick a few favorites for the recruitment of the Concept art group...

I hope you got the information you wanted now...

btw: I think this battle is already won by Marthe, she made (by far) the best piece...wished I would have looked better before I voted....I wanted to vote for more people then only wouter...
