I like the way your rendering is progressing... do try and push those pencils, though, the same way you push your inks and digi work, get those DARKS in there... experiement with a range of graphite, too... 2H on up to the 4Bs and such. DRAW MOAR!

    Hey dished. Cool sketchbook.
I know you have more updates, just talked to Daniel who were doing a OC session with you. He posted the last ones, now you post one

A suggestion, before rendering, keep it simple, get the basic shape right. The outline will suggest the planes and describe a lot of form. That's why you can tell so much about form just from an outline.
So keep it simple. make an construction of the head and stick with it until you know how it changes and how the proportions look like.

Good luck. And Happy New Year!

Skull study looks strong, I think you should take that sort of aim at your other pieces as well, great potential there! Don't forget you can push your values harder, more rendering, darker darks and highlights!

Time to fill your sketchbook! More updates! :]

Yeah, those Vilppu exercises are very useful. Looking at your gestures, I would say to concentrate on the action lines first, when you sketch you tend to go for the contour lines first. The action lines are the implied lines that move through limbs, and any objects that have obvious length, they're also implied whenever there are convex contours.
Linear direction tends to be ambiguous, but the figure can specify the direction by the sense of muscle action, I mean to say that 'if an arm is extended then I know that it's moving forward because the tris and shoulders are active, I know there's a twist in a specific direction because one of the obliques is active.' A good example of it is in Michelangelo's "the temptation and the fall of man", you can tell where everyone's moving by the use of muscle cues, and the clarity of his linear arrangement.
Lines are are also implied as acting on contours, the arrow is the perfect example of it ------->, I know that arrows moving to the right because I follow the line through it's effect on the line at the end, which is being bent by it's force.
The kid's left arm and right torso work like the arrow. Also clarified formal directions by using Vilppu's tools.

Hey Dished, it is a pleasure meeting you these last couple of weeks at the CA open figure session. Boy have you come along ways from page one to page three!! I would say keep doing studies and drawing the figure like you have been doing. And congrats on finishing the moleskin you showed me saturday morning. I look forward to your next update. And if you're not there next Saturday I am certain i will see you here on the forums well i'm off to bed. Safe travels and take care.
