If youre wondering, its mostly gouche(watered down a fair bit), a tad watercolour and a bit of brushpen for the blacks(black paint doesnt look very good when it dries)

is the first thing on your book that really attracts my eyes! you have a lot of cool stuff, and yes you've made a great progression that you should be proud of, but that picture, what ever its from ref or not have so great colours, and its technically good executed which is pretty 'not so often to be seen' on your digitals. As I said, you have some really cool stuff so don't get angry at me for being honest, after all its just my opinion , you choose whatever to listen or not

I like the colors (although a bit more of something more saturated here and there would be good) and the texture in the abstract, but I'm not so sure about the comp. The value pattern doesn't really draw me in, it leads me away and out through the corner.

"actually I thought the clouds were weak.." - the pattern there, the uplift (especially in the cloud on the left), mimicks the unique rock shapes and that helps the comp work. as long as a strong fundamental like that is in place, it doesn't matter if they're more unfinished or such.

I like the color choices in that abstract, but I think, given its nature, that you should be more assertive and conscious with your strokes. I agree with Craig in the comp issue as well.

Lee, I understannd the general bias people have towards abstracts, but i urge you all to be open minded about all aspects in art.
mine was admittedly, a crappy abstract, but look at Mr blonde's abstracts, they are really great!

some really dodgy sketchbook pages, some totally unreffed, some from life, some from ref( fairly manipulated tho), the same old drill

also, I bought some high quality bristol paper( paper of the gods)
and I am working on some finished drawings.
They are turning out really nice, and I may end up posting them in finally finished.. we'll see
I was thinking of buying a whole lot of bristol and binding it up into a sketchbook, that would be sweet!

oh I'm not bias toward abstract art, there are some that I do like. It's just that abstract art doesn't fill me with awe.

yes i understand you, and your right, the majority of abstract art(mine included is rubbish)
I find abstract methods are found in all good designs, and illustrations.
Have a look at andrew jones and Targete for example.

this last week has been an odd one.
School has been stressing me out big time

other news i did a painting course on saturday "painting for beginners" and it was tons of fun and inspiring.
we did a 1 hour still life which ill show.(wip)

also, i was thinking of dropping these into finally finished, is that a bad idea?

I'm very impressed with the still life drawings. There's a patient appreciation of the values in all three, and you kept things interesting with the choice of objects.

You're already doing it to a degree, but I'd suggest stepping up the difference in level of attention, value, and contrast between objects in the fore and backgrounds even more. This is especially true in any piece where the still life arrangement moves back in space (as with 1 and 2). If I recall correctly David Leffel (awesome oil painter) always made the distinction between a still life work where things move back in space and those that stretch across the canvas vertically. In the latter he concentrated more on the rhythm and intensity of the light as it moves across the piece from l to r or so on.

Anyhow, you're already doing it to a degree, but if you play up the differences between the fore and the background objects more you'll avoid any flattening and the viewer should find it fun to move across the space, whether they realize it or not.

those are some ace still lifes dude! especially for your age! the darks could be pushed just a little bit more though but whatever... your other stuff is nice too man! keep doing what you are doing because its obviously working! it will definitely be interesting to see where you are at in a couple of years!

okie, the finish pieces ... great concentration on form, details and rendering, however, the values are too close to each other, the darks needs to be pushed more. This will also help separate one object from another and add depth.
