The japanese guy's face and hair is very nicely done, but it looks like you lost interest as you prgressed down his figure. Nice heels, tho

The last two are especially good, I really like the confidence of the geometrical background elements.

In all these pieces I think you've made real progress with your edges, particularly the in the stabbing-in-the-moonlight scene. Atmospheric fogginess and the dark edges are nicely smokey.

Hands/feet and drpaery all still need a bit more consideration, but the way you're rendering the faces is very nice.

Nice sketchbook, you have a good sense of composition and how to direct the viewer. I think you need to work on depicting form quite a bit more, but the still lifes you've been doing are the fast track to learning that.

getting better all the time. those oriental illus are by the far the best thing ive seen from u. the snowy ones so atmospheric and the soft edges are beautiful i might just have to do a piece like that some time

a couple of things r letting ya down: i dont think the composition on the dinner scene is working as well as the others. to emphasize the guys pain u could contort his shape a bit more, make his gesture more twisted in comparison to the calm balance of the woman opposite. there something detached about the perspective and they dont relate spatially as well to their scene as the characters in the other illustrations

i loooove the butcher one, a little more elaboration on the contents of the table would have been cool . not much, N maybe some highlights on the cleavers n bones would work to seperate the textures. right now it looks more like u made it murky cos u couldnt be bothered rather than u wanted to leave the gruesome details to the viewers imagination.

lastly i just want to reiterate what bones weep tedium said about where your strengths and weaknesses are atm, but man ur really developing ur own style and im just waitin to see what else u come up with! really cool stuff

    Lil update.
I'm going to have to scan my sketches at some point. It's somewhat laborious, which tends to put me off.

By the way, Is there a way of putting spaces between uploaded images?

The crypt is a very ambitious image, cool angle. I think the perspective is a little skewed in places, but the candle light is very effective. The skull wall is nicely done too. Maybe a photographic stone texture laid on top on an overlay layer would make the walls a bit more stoney?

Bones Weep Tedium Yeah my perspective could do with a lot of work. Good idea with the texture overlay, It does look slightly too matte.

Some sketches, I'm not feeling too confident with these but I thought I ought to at least post something.
My scanner has decided to go a bit apeshit on me, so the contrast is a little strange on these scans. I think I could do with tightening my pencils up a tad, im far too scribbly these days.
I have also been trying to work on my females. It's one of my biggest weakness...soo difficult... I'm actually a little too embarassed to post a lot of them up. Even the ones here make me shiver

There are some really nice details in all your sketches, and some really nice pencil work. But there are also a lot of flaws, and it seems to be the same nice touches and the same flaws in each sketch.

I say your male/monstrous faces are nice but the legs of your figures are a bit nervously constructed, go grab a figure drawing book such as Bridgeman and focus on the nuts n bolts of how legs turn into hips then how hips join for example. Then start trying to build poses then start making the poses slinky and feminine. Focus on one thing at a time

Bones Weep Tedium Thanks, your crits have been really useful, so ive spent some time studying the hips and legs today. Theres so much I still need to study. Like hands and forearms etc, etc.

witek Haha, I don't know what to say! I'm constantly kicked in the nuts every time I look around these sketchbooks, just keep fighting!

Ok, small update. Ive been doing mostly leg studies today. I really can't be bothered to scan them right now, It just takes too much time plus they are A3+. I might start taking photos though instead.

The first sketch is just an anatomical memory test, exploring in my mind particular shapes.

With the troll bloke I wanted to try sketching something a little more polished, however it's still pretty messy.... My hands still bloody suck...so guess what I'm going to be working on tomorrow!!!!
I also want to get some obsy paintings on the go, they are invaluable!

Hands still suck... I think Im going to polish up the barbarian character, he's quite fun. Definitely need to fix his hands.

With the skull study I wanted to use a hard opaque brush as I tend to rely on the opacity pen pressure too much.
Loomis mentions something along the lines of "How round can you make it square" or something like that, which is quite an interesting way of simplifying round forms.

    Hey there,

Absolutely in love with the variety and gripping quality of some of your characters. The only thing I could love more here is where they are placed - their worlds and surroundings (something I fail at entirely). Amazing variety and persistence!

I have just creeped through your whole sketchbook and would finally like to say you're rate of improvement is astounding.
But also not surprising given how hard you're working.
You've been coming up with some awesome ideas too, I loved the batch on post 304. Tearing off a man's face is a hard thing to convey- unless you routinely do it yourself. xD

SO yes, I really don't know what to say crit wise.
    Just keep posting!

dude your pencil stuff is so rad! you asked some time ago but if you still want to know - you can leave spaces between images if you upload from a different image hosting site instead of using the ca uploader. paste the [IMG] tag in then just leave gaps between them or write between them.

are you at uwe? if everything goes to plan i would love to end up there in a couple of years (:

    Something a little bit different

    raminafshari Thanks for your comment!
Jansi Yeah, my locations are not particularly exciting. I need to treat environments as characters themselves.
Naidy Hehe, thanks. It was very difficult trying to make the tearing off the face "tasteful". Hopefully it's not as horrible as the original old japanese print.
    M!CK Thankyou!
Raffix Yeah, I know you can put spaces between the images using the img tag, but I was wondering if there is a way to do it when you attach an image. There are quite a few threads that have disapearing content because photobucket or whatever think the images are NSFW. So I'm trying to avoid img tagging.
I have just graduated from UWE. I'm shoved out in the open, where money is king and jobs are few
fudgeloaf Yes I definitely need more hard edges, I could do with building up my understanding of specific shapes.

Right last night I thought I should try something a little different from the norm. I can feel myself stagnating a bit. I decided to sculpt a trolls head. I know everyone sculpts trolls but I don't care. They are incredibly fun to make. I can see myself wanting to get into sculpture more in the future. I could do with some better equipment though for a start. Like decent paints and carving tools.
To make this I used sculpy, the rear end of a brush, acrylic paints and a cocktail stick. Oh and the hood is just my sleeve.
This is very fun and very addictive!
