Moth looks really nice man, but the background busys it up too much, see about flattening that down a bit and it'll really shine.
Like where this is going.

Yup, 2B is too hard a pencil to get the values really dark. When I want really dark values in a pencil sketch, I use an 8B.
Life drawing looks good. Are you doing any simplified gesture drawings of these figures?
Moleskine life drawing.
lefran Thanks fran, I agree with what your saying,
John_the_One Mwahah the snowman is hunting you now Mr D :p
Badger I totally agree with you there, im gonna have to clean it up.
Moai Hmm, Ill have to try that 8b out, cheers. Ive tried to do a few simple gestures drawings though its abit difficult to do as the classes ive attended arent mine, meaning hes only been in a few positions. No 2 minute poses yet ufortunatley. Ill try and drop a hint to the teacher next time.
Some small Life drawings again. Would like to apply more tones next time.
looks good man...i like pencil sketches...keep posting.
Hey dude.
Making headway hear, next time try using the side of the pencil to lay in tones and you'll be able to block them in a lot quicker.
Look for the tones in the masses not in 'bits', start with the base tone the lightest then work through to the darkest. Maybe try breaking it down to a limit of 3 to 4 values.
Good luck.
Hey there, Rich! Nice stuff here. For some reason, the "crab" critter in post# 119 bothers me. It's the leg structure! It's a great idea, but the joints destroy it. I suggest finding crab refs and redoing it using real crab leg joints. If you really look at them, you'll find that they are really fascinating. they can give you lots of ideas for future sketches and designs.
Keep up the good work!
Alex
Its been hard keeping up to date latley. been allover the place.
Wip
I think the legs are too short?
Mr. Man all of these random object sketches are great practice. Keep it up.
Nice artwork mate but I think you should pay some more attention to details especially hands and feet of characters 'cos some of them really spoil the pictures... That hand of the monster waving at us...Not good at all... But in the same time some pictures kick ass with creativity and imagination.
Drawings on toned paper are really nice though. That monster- good shading mate and interesting concept.
Photoshop stuff- i see improvement but still not spectacular. Maybe after you've finished with colours try playing with lights and make some nice shiny surfaces and deeper shadows...That's my suggestion.

NIGHTMARE OF THE WEEK ACTIVITY- ROUND #6 Hotels & Mirrors[/U]
This is a WIP illustration for beauty and the beast. As ever my A4 scanner doenst quite fit the A3 image so ignore the wierd composition.
u have soem great imagination and creativity going on. its also nice to see you exploring various kinds of medias and styles. one thing that i see in many of your figures/characters is that their stances feel a bit unatural and static. try and explore some gestures and dramatic poses which can really show how the figure works. great stuff though. would love to see more.
Doing good so far. But as the others have said, you still need form in your characters. I suggest studying from Kevin Chen's figures and life studies. Heres the link.

Keep up the good work. Hope these help.
nice, I like your style. Those are some crazy ass horns.
I think kawakaze hit the nail on the head for you. Gestures, man, gestures! Also, the foreshortening on your Beast's legs needs work. Think of the legs as cylinders and it'll help you with drawing that. Also, try not to cut your characters off at the ankles.
Cool character design!
Interest imagination <> I do not work in pencil a great deal but admire those that do <> I have worked with graphite and powered graphite a great deal in the past and will take a look at your new thread to see if I have things to add.
Loving the doodles and all your stuff!! Keep practice, the progress is noticable!!![]()

JoeEffect Thanks joe!
[void] Thanks for that void, I think I might grab a few traditional pencils, these mechanical ones are pretty naff when it comes to using the side. Sometimes its good to fill large areas quickly.
escape2mars Hey man, nice to see you pop in. The crab creature was just a random sketch so there was no real thought into it. It was sort of a rendering test in my moleskine, however looking ar crabs joints is a great idea for the whole visual memory thing whether doodle or not. I went to the natural history museum a few days ago and in one section there was the muscle mechanism of a crab. It was so bizarre as everything its almost inverted.
DARAF Cheers Daraf!
Grim Reaper Thanks Grim. I really should do some hand studies as I really neglect them alot, same as feet. Thanks for your input I appreciate it.
kawakaze Dude thats definatley something Im gonna have to improve at, whats design if the character is all stiff and boring. I need more emotion in my pieces. Cheers!
Envisor Thanks for the link, I shall check it out.
styler Hehe yeh he needs extra big doors for them.
Moai Yeh your right its something ive had trouble visualizing latley.
mentler Thanks for popping into my book. Unfortunatley I think the rendering thread has died already. I think I might post some sketches to incourage people.
Pistol Thanks Pistol
style cheers for popping in!
Poison_art Ello me duck.
Ive been trying to do some more finished pieces latley, Illustrators illustrate and thats what I need to do more of hehe. Cheers!
Booty+Beast
Updated Beast pictures, I cropped the main piece as belle was hard to reckognise, she could either be a chair or a sumo wrestler hehe. I darkened some parts and gave the chair some padding. I still need to add a few extra shadows but this is pretty much finished.
nice concept...make sure to use harder shadows for the cloth though!

nice. i really like the detail you are beginning to pull out of this one. any chance u could do some closeup renders of his face?
Hey man, good to see the hard work up in here. With the first one, it's usually better to crop a figure at the the thighs than at the shins/ankles. Cropping just the feet makes it feel like they're footless and hobbled and usually says that the artist just didn't want to draw the feet. The second one has some very cool detail to it. The chair is very well rendered. Maybe try and work out the hand on the right a bit more.
They both kinda lack large areas of dark, working up from pure white with pencil can be exhausting and time consuming. You can try and put down midtone ground of graphite before you begin, then just push the darks and pull out the lights with and eraser.
Very cool concept, anyway. Lotta hard work that's payin off. Keep blingin!
Great sketchbook you have here.... love the skulls. Do you own one or are you looking at ref images.... maybe a museum trip or two?
I am really liking your imagination in some of those sketches. It really impresses me to see such ease of creativity. You'll do well as a character designer, if that is what your goal is. I think your "doodles" have progressed which is always a pleasure to see.
In my very humble opinion, I do notice a lack of attention shading. In those sketches of the spheres, you seem to be lazy, when it comes to smoothing out the gradation of the shading (which ultimately shows through in your sketches).
What i like to do, is set the opacity of the brush way down to about 20%, and work in passes. Once you have gotten to where you currently are with those, then you have a pallette inside of your subject to pull from. Just use those tones to work it work it and work it some more, to blend it to perfection. Really pay attention to the form and how the light reflects off of it. When you go back to pencil drawing, or whatever medium you prefer, make sure you preserve the lights and focus on the source of light. It will give your drawing a greater sense of depth and realism.
When drawing with a pencil, i like to turn it on its side to wash in some tone. It appears as though you like to line in your shading with the tip of your pencil, which is fine, but be sure to keep those lines as even and clean as you can.
I hope this helps, and feel free to contradict anything i have said. I am not a master nor am i even close, in fact im quite the novice, and could use a few pointers myself.
Good luck, and good drawing! Keep it up!
-edit BTW I agree with Andy P

Really like that last piece. It's quite emotive.

Blimey, its been a while since I have updated. This uni and college lark hasnt helped I must say.
Been trying to sneak into alot of life drawing classes and learning more about the figure, loosen up etc.
Sorry for the sloppy scanning.

UPDATE YOU BIG FRAZZLE.
Other than that, i think you should leave the lines alone for a bit. They are looking very confident, if occasionally laboured. In life drawing get some charcoal and work big, shade and get that form down, line is lovely for establishing silhuette but shading will really help you too see and break down the values.
If you really want to do lines, get a pen, it will force you too really look at the angles, justify them with the negative angles. Good luck Richibo.
