Well... I think there's some real progress going on here. I was going to suggest squinting to see the main shadow shapes, but some of work in your last update suggests you've started to do it anyway...

You can measure while laying on tone shapes even if you don't do a line drawing to start.

... I particularly like the still life of the cast of the mouth, and the sheeps head.

I can def. see progress throught this sketchbook so far.
My favorites were in posts #41 and #48 on the first page.

I don't really know what to say for crit. wise, but I will say this: I like your style that you are configuring here. The only thing I saw that looked a bit akward was the noses on your people drawings. I think they are a little out of proportion with the rest of the face. Other than that, things are looking great!

I really love the line work on your pen drawings!
    Keep them coming!

Not much for still lifes right now. I'm taking an illustration class right now so you'll probably be seeing a lot finished works and their paper trails.

You have some great sketches in your sb. I can see you have some trouble with perspectives. That can be trained up though with drawing simple to complex objects in different angles.

The belt should curve down around the body on the last picture. The chair could face the same direction as the person, to give the feeling of comfort

Anyway. It is important to decide on a set scene in a smaller scale beforehand, checking if your happy with the look of it (worth about 2-5 minutes effort), it'll improve your overview when diggin into the finer details on the final.

    Keep it up.

I really love all your pieces you have done in pen!
It's incredible, and your linework is really well done!
I wouldn't mind seeing more animal sketches.
    Your school work is awesome!
What school are you going to?

Shannon Thanks a ton! I'm really getting into ink lately and I'm hyped you like my new stuff. I'll definitely try some live drawing on some animals I know that are around here. My school is a local community college here in Waterloo, Iowa, called Hawkeye CC. I'm in for Graphic Design. Though its not all about illustration I am taking a class for it right now. Aren't you up at AI in Minnesota, hows that life?

    Nice updates man....

Envy the figure drawing classes you're in.
But finally I found an atelier too..hehe

Probably the crit I'll give you is that you should watch the proportion.

The last one is the best...you're getting there in the hatchings, man.

    hehe...ya caught me on proportions...

anyway, the cover has some tangent issues...
like the ships( I don't know what thats called, wave-motion?)
looks like it scraped the sea... maybe extending the lines outside earth?
And the sattelite was kind of sitting at earth maybe a little blur effect could separate that and lesser values than the ship because it's farther away from us...that's it.

wanna see more of that pages, man...

Drapery studies is something else i am taking up as well, since i can't seem to draw trenchcoats or folds as well as i'd like to, they are helping tho, as for your book, i see a lot of expressive work in your sketches. great basis for a style here, make sure u keep banging the study work,

ahhh studies, the greatest gift god cud give to an artist
Why do u stick your nose in other families business'. Come on dude don't u have any HOBBIES?

Hmm - perspective needs work (specifically on figures), but the pictures are improving nicely .

I really like the bird in http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...0&d=1170189887

It looks really nice, and the marks feel confident.

Keep pushing it and don't forget to jump on those studies - looking forward to seeing more.

Bard - I'm not sure what you mean about the ship and the wave motions. I'll put that satellite more in the background though. I haven't even started another page! I'm waiting for the script for the next one.

Blade-14 - Thanks for stopping by! Thanks for the encouragement. I know I'll only find my edge if I keep drawing. studies ftw.

Alzorath - Perspective on the figures? I'll look into what I can do to improve that. Not gonna bother going back too much on what I've done, gotta be progressive. I'm glad you liked the bird. That was a good sb page

Heres the character in color. Like 3 hrs in Photoshop.

I say keep the smoke simple and the bg color is almost the same as the skin color.

I say keep on the still lifes or life drawings, you don't know how it's helping my art trying to study these again because as I said I(like many youngsters would actually skip this important level).
Fundamentals will be your building block for making good art man.
    Trust me..

    These are nice...
You are studying everything from bones, rendering, animals, planes, gestures and experimenting.

The guy in the ski mask has very good rendering and so is the guy beside him.
Frankly, I never done sketching from live things, just from photographs.
So that will be my assignment this week, thanks man!

Will look forward to your next posts...

Yeah! Thanks Bard. I should do more studies from my anatomy book. It has bones as well as master studies and photo references. All around good one! The Ski mask guy was from my head. The portrait to the right of that was of my friend - real quick.

I love it that you use what I do as an inspiration sometimes, thats just mirrored back to me, I want to do more!

I colored the weird perspective guy last night.

Hi Mat! Some good sketches here. here are some things I have been using to improve on my figure drawing:

    Structure of Man DVD's

    Bridgman

    Hogarth

The Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing

Vilppu is also known to be top class! Nevere used it myself though.

Using a computer to do art can be deadly for the beginner, so just keep up with those traditional studies and I am sure we will see a pro in no time!

Hey, I like much of the bunch of pencil sketches. Some of (...ok, most of!) the figures seem stiff though - perhaps some curve would bring out the rhythm of the body abit more?
