Hey everyone.
I've been lurking around this forum for a while and have now decided to join the fray and post some artwork.
So here it is.

Some standard things, some a bit cliche, but tell me what you think.

I moved almost all of the images to attachments to keep the reduce the load on the server my website is on. Nothing major, just pointing it out to those who have frequented my thread.

I cooked these up the other night while talking to a friend on the phone.
Colored them today, although I didn't want to color these. I was going to refine them more and more, coming up with better drafts. But another friend got all whiny on me about posting just the pencil sketch on my blog, so much to my shagrin, I colored them.

What do you think?

This is the character which I use as my internet name. He is also my avatar of a sorts. Although on the internet (unlike, say, the Metaverse in SnowCrash) you cannot see the other person, but if you could, I would probably go with this.

I've had this character since the 10th grade and have just been upgrading him over the years. He follows some of my favorite character traits, belts, swords, long hair, big boots, baggy pants, etc. I'll follow this drawing up with a young version, his swords collection, items, spells, abilities, and so on.

This particular costume is a slight upgrade to the one I created in my senior year in college. I added the belts, and switched the details of his armor. The ridges are gone and a simple version of the "circuit" design is there instead.

This was a fairly easy thing to paint. Since he follows the hero-in-black architype, his clothing has very little light on it. In a previous post where I put up the pencil for this, you can see I planned out the folds in his clothing and the shapes of the black areas. This only tricky part was the sheath, which ended up looking bent just before I finished. So that was a pain to change.

What the, why is nobody else posting here? You got a really cool style, I especially like the sketch with the two elves, the guy holding the book is perfect and is in my opinion your best figure here. You tend to draw some huge upper lips on the girl but I understand it's a style you're going for.

You have a very good line stroke.

Keep them coming, people will notice.

Large file! Sorry if it slows anyone down!

So, here's the weekend project. Hairstyles for the female elf character, with the crazy gradient hair.

The only crazy-difficult-thing I can see right now is that, when I light her up at the end, it might take a awhile. Just so many faces and hairs to do, it will take a bit of time. Even if I copy and paste most of it.

Still very rough, obviously, but I will be updated this post as I go. No need to clog up the thread with lots of these pictures.

Some interesting work. Your line improved so much in post 7. Your forms are pretty solid. Your style is sort of an end in itself and I don't know what your intentions are here, but for general improvement you should try to break it a little and do more observational work. Also, Your colors are quite good but they can get lost in the value. Keep going.

And, right now, the intentions are for practice. Later it will be to get a job in gaming. But right now, I'm doing freelance work, this is to keep the skills up.

Video game design, eventually. But right now, I have the Freelance thing, which is fun. So I'm happy.

That's what counts.

But, right now, whenever I read stuff about the gaming buisness I just get depressed.

Also, game makers are looking for 8s, 9s, and 10s. And I'm more like a 5, 6, 7, so I would have a harder time getting a job I want. I don't mind being a middle tier artist anyways. I don't like being the best. Too many people are gunnin' for you and too many people end up kissin' your ass.

Besides, I would really prefer to make my own games anyways. I don't think I would be happy if I was stuck as an enviromental guy in the middle of an assembly line of game making.

I would like to start my own company, but I don't have the cash resources or experience yet. So that's in the far future.

The hair piece has more finished on it! All of the design are at 80% so that means the whole piece is at about 80%. Now I have to tweak the designs to either fix things I see wrong or to make them better, and then figure out a way to present them as a whole.

Hahaha! I *am* that “environmental guy in the middle of an assembly line of game making”. I used to think concept art was what I wanted to do, too. Then I got interested in 3D. Plus, I found out that the folks farther down in the assembly line have just as much oversight as does the concept artist. The concept artist does not have carte blanche to dictate what goes into the computer game. And I found out that not every piece of art gets concepted, or concepted thoroughly. There’s still a lot of creativity in what I do.

Anyway, some things to keep in mind: there are many more positions available as modeler/texturers than as concept artists in game companies. Not all companies can afford to keep full-time conceptors, so their conceptors often need to be able to model and texture in order to stay on the staff. And most concept artists are classically trained illustrators with years of experience, so the competition is stiff.

On the plus side, if you have a classical training in illustration, that leaves the whole field of illustration open to you, rather than just the narrow subset of concept art.

Lastly, most “successful” artists don’t have mobs of fans. They live out quiet lives with a steady income. That leaves no excuse to shoot for mediocrity. Mediocre artists are in danger of having to work a second job.

I have no yearning to do 3d at all. One of the reasons I haven't got a game job is they all want some measure of 3d. Which I'm sure is not hard, and if you want to do that, that's fine, but its not for me.

One of the reasons I want to do gaming concept art is I grew up looking at game art and playing games. If I were to list my influences, there would be some Impressionist painters, one or two older illustrators, and a bunch of game artists and creators (i.e. Shigeru Miyamoto the creator of the Legend of Zelda).

Although I know I will probably never be a Miyamoto. I'm not doing this for a fanbase. It's all for my own enjoyment, which makes me happy. That's sort of become a corner stone for me doing art, just to be happy.

Besides, the one or two positive replies in forums are gold! No they're platinum! And that's all I need on the fan side of things!

So...

Here is something slightly different and a couple more sketches.

A troll, which was a very quick coloring of a pen sketch.

Two new swords, inpractical but I have an excuse: They're magic!

And one pen sketch of a secondary character.

I think I'll go back into the troll later. Show some more muscle definition, flesh him out a little more and maybe texture up that skin a little. Maybe turn some of the spots/freckles/acne/ice-pick-wounds red, to add some more interest. The swords will maybe make it to the third draft as alternatives to the normal designs from before.

I actually got it from an Elvish name generator (you know, type in your own name and get an Elvish sounding name in return) when the first Lord of the Rings movie was just out. I believe it's Sindarin .

Besides, I really like the way how you tightened up the sketch of that troll. The sketch was rather messy, but the coloured overlay give him a lit more definition. Perhaps try tightening your sketches also (I know the trouble in doing that though )

So...

The final designs for Beonarri's weapons. Plus the rejects.

In the final design picture (white background) there are eight weapons. His main sword, an alternate (second player, etc.), four more with various properites and attributes, an "ultimate" weapon, and a goof-off weapon (ham, yummy!).

On the reject picture. A whole lot of variations on the finals. The trout, the inflatable sword, wooden sword, a magic wand, and others.

Now I have to find a way to present them. I will hopefully have this and the hair-piece complete soon.

Beonarri's name is the 'Beo' from Beowulf. The 'nar' from Narn, a race from Babylon 5, and 'ri', which I added on, so the name wouldn't sound so retarded.
BeonaR just didn't sound right, the "ee" sound at the end helped it.

Well, someone once told me that sirithduriel is Sirith (which is a river in Middle-Earth) - Dur (which means dark, think Barad-Dur) - Iel (female part of ME-names). But yeah throwing words together is a great way to make up nicknames

ANd that line of action as Banshax means is the basic line of what your character is doing. I remember some drawings about it, but I can't remember where, perhaps Loomis in his Figure Draing for all it's Worth...

I cannibalize names from everything to create names for my stuff.
