Want critique?! draw more nude chicks!

You're doing beautiful photo studies, they are very helpful but some phenomenons are hard to notice and understand on them. In Indian Head you could add variety of local colours and colours of light as a result of bounced light. I would suggest you to look for veeeeery subtle colour shift when you will be doing next study. Master painters observed it very well and emphasized is very often. I am recently fascinated with Bouguereau regarding skin subtleness and all kind of shifts (hue, value, detail amount...).

    Best!

Awesome work, your studies are looking really good.
The only thing i see is that in your own painting there seems to be a lot less contrast, and they seem very mid-toney so to speak. Try and push some darks and light and strong colours to push the contrast.

Cool stuff man, keep it up, youre getting really good

the last chow is a good step in the right direction for you.

overall the handling of light is better, but you're still trying to 'draw' the details disregarding light and form. and how u did the muscles of the stomach/chest just looks real weird. [wrong]

Beutiful colors in that last post! Great overall since of form. I'd really like to see you put that energy into some pencil sketches. Also, in the train/polar bear painting maybe play around with edge sharpness and focus like you've done in the winter forest painting. Hope that's helpful? Thanks for this great sketchbook definatly keeping an eye on this one

Cool Cammy! Not sure about the shoulder muscles, I think the junctions are too sharp, even for a tough girl like her. The perspective in the feet in our left looks a bit weird, maybe if it pointed forward it'd be better. Last but not least, the gun arm is in a strange position, considering that she's holding such a heavy gun. It would appear more natural if the arm was tilted inwards, with the gun just over her pelvis.
Well sorry for ripping off your cammy, it's a cool work anyways!

Spend more time on your studies. I don't think there is much to learn from doing many quick stuff from magazines. Instead, do 2 refined copies (in pencil) from sargent or repin or any painter who were able to concieve the head in distinct masses of color and tone. Employ the knowledge gained from these in your next set of skull studies (drawings conciously executed with mass and line, with a complete overview over all value relationships*). Combine all this with "conceptual construction" (Loomis, kChen, Bammes, Bridgman, Vanderpoel etc.).

During and after all this, you'll probably notice that the speed will pick up. You can't learn to be quick by painting quickly. Any musical perfomer would agree with me on that

*Big emphasis on relationships here. What is a pure black in the reference can be a gray in your drawing, as long as all the other half tones and lights correspond to that value.

worked well for this guy though V, maybe not that much of a cop out, def keep pushing for more complicated peices and bg, etc. though

    Thanks for the suggestion man

The reason I went for quick studies (about an hour or so) was that I just didn't seem to have the time for anything more than that. I had a few suggestions for doing one hour studies and they seemed to be coming out alright at first, but I found myself looking at the clock more than my subject.

One thing that did actually help me though was the quick faces (the girls), mainly because there were a lot of basics about face that I missed. I pretty much discovered the form of the eye on those studies.

So I think I'll end up making a compromise, quick "sketches" of faces or poses and gestures, and longer studies like you suggested. I'll probably start with that sargent painting of the sitting lady (can't remember the name off the top of my head, shame on me) in pencil... which is frightenting, and after that I have a bouguereau image that I've wanted to study inPS for a while now.

All I have to do is find the time (and the balls) to do it Thanks again.

I think the issue with your work is just value placement to describe form correctly. It is never a bad idea to find reference to get what you are looking for right. I don't agree with just doing specific things to get better at drawing and painting. Remember tools are tools. The end result is what you are trying to get to. Finding ways to refine what look you want is what you want to go after. Be careful with composition. In the snowy forest piece you have a couple of trees that kind take up space and split the composition up. Not a good idea. It doesn't work. I can understand what you are trying to go for as far as scale, but you want to use trees as frame. Think of a picture frame. The picture is not going outside of the frame right? Think in terms of that. Give it room to breath as well. You don't want clutter. It's like a junky closet. Atmosphere is another thing you want to address in your environments. Even values is almost consistent througout paintings. Less value as you go towards horizon. Even if you have to cheat it, will help sell the illusion of depth. I hope I gave you a bit more insight. Keep painting. You're improving a lot.

Well hi! Long time no drop-by, though I've seen some of your work on Facebook.
I'm loving all the landscapes, there was one of hills on the last page that kinda reminded me of the Alpine region in summer. Also the boat one is great. The one with the men in the snow in the forest too.. yeh, definitely keep the landscape practicing up
