Jason needs improvement so beat his ass with critiques

*** TINY SCANNER ALERT ***

Well, been here for what.... 6 months? high time for a sketchbook. I know what you're thinking though;

"Why now, Rhine?"

Well, I'm extremely frustrated with my art. I create lifeless poses and nothing I create looks realistic. Focussing on a skecthbook will help me forget about goblin sketches and badly painted characters that I normally deal with, all the while helping me get some much-needed practice in.

My first little batch is just simple hand crap. For some extremely odd reason, typing 'hand' or 'foot' into google will yeild a usable picture every 5 pages or so. C'est la vie I suppose.

Well, went up to camp, so I had a great opportunity to get some sketching in. First is an incomplete pic of the kitchen, next is a view of Campbell Island. Both are pretty sketchy.

After those is the 'muffin TOSSING man' and a personal project.

Hey man,

Thanks for your feedback on my comics. I will take your advice into account, although I have studied anatomy for many years now. (I'll try to get some of my realistic work and non comic work up) When I draw realistically I rarely mess around with line variation and thickness and human porportion. I prefer not to simplify my body parts in my comics, not out of lack of knowledge of body structure, but mostly for the odd appearence, stances, and shapes that may come about with contour and partially blind contour line drawing. Thanks again for the feedback, hope this doesnt sound like an excuse, just my side of it.

No I know what you mean, there is a wackyness that can be attained in doing that. The problem is is that it seems like some parts are too wacky while others aren't. I see it as a contrast of styles within each pic that fails to bring everything together. All it needs is some tender love and work is all

The figure's pose in the upper right corner of your last post was pulled off pretty good.it captures the movement well. just keep paying attention to proportion, which,which I'm sure you already know to do, and I'm sure you'll make good progress

Thanks cordy... even though his legs are totally broken :p feet, faces and general proportions are the worst thing that's happening with my stuff right now, and Ima trying to grind all the innacuracies out.

It looks like you are improving Rhinville. I see when you take the time you can produce some very ncie work . ( loki ).
I hope to see more of those from you. It's a shame your class isn't doing nude figure drawing, but i'm sure you can go to some after work/school lessons, somewhere else in town, for a small amount.

Hey Rhineville, youre showing improvement in your figures and your keeping your proportions nicely measured.
I think that what would really push your figures is some intense study of the skeleton and how the muscles attach to it. I've been studying that recently and its really helped.

That's one thing that I havn't done. I've done le skelete and figures, but never a mucle/skeleton mix. I just bought 'an atlas of anatomy for artists' (a GREAT book btw) and I think it'll come in quite handy in that regard

Good! This new tonal stuff is good. Keep at it, studying the face is hard but a worthy cause and is definately an important part to concentrate on. Remember that sometimes a lot of quick sketches can be of more worth than one long-ass study that is really just an excercise in perseverance. Keep goin Jase. Jase

Tjose spartans are looking cool. Have you ever tried drawing your characdters to a horizon line? I've started doing that recently and it helps to solidify them in space.

Nice work on those studies. Try to do as many as you can and be aware of the lines you use, don't make them randomly. Every line should have a purpose and add to what you want to create. Only just beginning to understand this properly myself =D

Really love that first one! The pole is a bit thin, don't forget that is a big part of your picture too, so try not to neglect it, needs some solidity at the moment.
I like thhe upper body a lot, good work, just be careful with the legs, because the angle they are at suggests that he is a little unstable. Seriously though, goood to see these last few dude, getting me excited about art here heh.. Keep on going!

This is what I like to see. Your lines look cleaner on these last two. you should concider making sure all of your lines are connected on the characters form, because it helps to make them seem solid. I have problems remembering to do it, but it's something to consider.
