    Talking USA today. superhero thingy

Last year, i had the opportunity to work for the english magazine "CG world". I had to create some super heroes and i ended up with some very classical figures. I made a couple of attempts on some original designs (more sculpty/Botero like characters), but unfortunately they were not selected.
Because i'm a loony bastard, i made myself a quick picture, called "USA today", with a very dense/fat/strong/funny super hero. This picture was designed for the web, in 20-30 min i think.

And after one year, i felt like it was time to push this idea a bit further.
Yeah yeah... this new proposal lacks the funny aspect of the initial one and it's a bit more serious, even if, to me, proportions are still amusing.

So i found back an old release of the geometry, that i've tweeked in Zbrush for 2 or 3 hours, then rendered in Maya, with a basic lighting and an occlusion shader. Back to photoshop, i guess i must have been doodling for 6-8 hours in the end.
This time, it is designed for print (A3-300dpi).

    and yeah, some closeUps:

and the old pict for reference:

    Hope you'll enjoy.

Wonderful piece...reminds me a bit of Alex Ross. The texture work behind this piece is amazing. Great work!

bengine, thanks. glad it had this traditional media aspect that i definitly want in my work

Nephilim; yup. i must admit it was an idea (the 30's look) i had in mind since i started this pict.

m@; cool, thanks dude! i'm working more and more on my brushes, and the way i can mix 3d with a 2d organic feeling. Allow me to have fun modelling, and fun in texturing too.

Andreasrocha; Alex Ross, a logical influence considering the 30's thing Nephilim was pointing at. Thanks.

SBACHAN, mr Incredible was an obvious reference when i made the first shot on this pict; guess i kept the idea although now it's a bit less visible.

Sweet! I see a bit of Alex Ross in your work....way to make the humanity creep into the character of USA Today!
    Cheers!

5 stars from me... I really do love this image. Your work in general is the kind of style Ive always admired and you have a way with layout... I particularly feel you are one of the few artists for me that make images which really leave an impression. Great work, again :] - J

Voraz; thanks man; yeah, the guy went popular; you know, free buffets, drinks... gained a lot.

    se7en; thanks man

redehlert; Alex Ross, i really like what he did on some portraits. Trues, there's some kind of sick desperation in his characters... I really think that when you wake up every day with the world to save on your schedule it come become tedious...

J.Decker: glad i got one, finally - thanks

Mecha Hate Chimp: thanks dude, sincerely. Since i like your work too (creations) you comment strikes into my heart.

    Lewiston; say what???

Keep on and thanks for the interrest.

Loic this is cool but to be honest i liked your original far more it has subtle bits of surface information that dont over describe them selves. I think you nailed it with the first aproach. Iv always admired your 3d work and Im glad that you have found euphoria in your 2d, I only hope that it doesnt overshine your 3D.

I would LOVE to see this superhero in action, with all his imperfections, and (apparent) phenominal strength! I love the style.

    great job.
i don't know why but i'd love to see him with hair.
i think it would be more "american".
for now he could be a former soviet superhero.

    J'adore !
La technique semble intéressante [même si je connais pas Z-brush], mais alors chapeau sur le rendu !

That's a pretty cool piece! You really feel the denseness/mass of the character.
