CONAN smells distinctly like rotting fruit

Hey guys, thought I'd make a sketchbook too. I'm out of practice and need to brush off the rust and improve.

CC welcome, I'm relatively thick in the head at times. (My record is taking 3 years to understand one particular crit before, but I got there eventually.) So yeah, help is appreciated.

My aim is to get stuff up weekly, and get better. Eventually.

Quickie from today, was thinking about antelope-archers.

Cool deal. I always like to see animal studies. The girl's face on the first page looks a little off, the jaw line is over way too far. I tend to do that sometimes, too. Other than that I think you've got some fun ideas going on here.

Looking good so far, theres some good control of line and form, the animals are looking good, they are a difficult area to do, especially horses, but yours are looking good. Keep up the good work ya sausage.

great stuff. But like Saikin said i wanna see more. You have a great handle on your lines and anatomy of animals and things. What about forshortening. lets see some wild images of rearing horses and leaping jaguars or a person flying right at you or something.

Those horses look really good. That last one looks abit off. Like there is some balance issue. Anyway, wish there was more to see; but a good start!

RSloan - Thanks, yeah I was going for a fairly square jaw on her but maybe a wee bit too square.

Guitarjames - Hey you're right. I need to watch eye size on her. As for the old man, the ref photo had his eyes in complete shadow.

Ewing, Saikin - thanks! I'll try to get more up, I think I spend too little time on my SB.

Prophet - Sausage. Hey that made my day! I've never called a sausage before.

Sweetoblivion314 - Ya caught me out. I need to do more action poses. I tend to get stuck doing calm pics.

Masterpug - Yeah I noticed it too afterwards. Either her human half is too big for the animal part or she's leaning forwar too much for her center of gravity. Either way it looks ungainly.


Well only two pages today I'm afraid. Sweetoblivion314, I did the jumping puma today just for you lol. (The ref pic didnt have back legs visible damnit.)

Awesome work on the cougar (or lion, or whatever it was), and I loved the shading and detail on the horse's head. Always good to see good animal pictures, keep up the good work.

Some criticism on the "antelopes":

-The face on the left one is a bit too round (looks like shes puffing or holding her breath or something)
-The ear is a little too high up, but not noticeably.
-The back horn would be coming out of the back of her head.
-I believe someone already mentioned the differences in eye sizes?

Besides those very small things, the pictures are great. Would be a lot better with some shading or texture thrown in; color optional.

Blue Severin, fedezz, devil-inside, Fishspawn, guitarjames, sabe2003 - Thanks guys. I'm sorry I haven't posted a lot but there's been some crazy (not good) stuff happening out here atm. I know it isn't anexcuse so I'll try to post more in future.

Sweetoblivion314 - lol, a puma is a cougar is a mountain lion. Hope that makes it clearer for ya. I haven't tried landscapes yet but ok for you I'll try soon. 8)

Xerobound - Thanks for the pointers! I'm pretty new to values and colour so I need to practise on it quite a lot.

Some face sketches. A quick 2 minute ballpoint pen of my housemate who plays a lot computer games next to my pc, so I get the profile view of her quite a bit :






Two more sketches. The top one is also from life but I messed up horribly. (yes video games for profile models lol) I didn't pay attention and ended up drawing it from 2 perspectives. The chin, mouth, nose and ear are profile. The rest of it is from a slightly lower view angle. ARGH!! Thought I'd post it up anyway. The second is a head from a photo ref.

Some hand studies from photo reference. They're all from "Bodywatching - A field Guide to the Human Species" by Desmond Morris. Old book but pretty good reading with lots of interesting photos of the human body. I'm regretting picking the photo of the Indian woman's dancing hand because her fingers were angled scarily.

Work in progress. I'm a sucker for art nouveau. The pose is based off a statuette by Julien Causse. I only noticed the lines were crooked after scanning it in. Oops.

this all looks really good,try shading your drawings more because the lines look spot on.
