if I can give you an honest crit, your digitals are somewhat sloppy... the ones from reference are lookin pretty good, but the ones from imagination need some work... id stick to doing studies with traditional media, and doing copies of pictures digitally, to get better at the basics of digital... and eventually you can use all you learned from the studies, and your knowledge of digital, and create something wonderful....

harsh maybe, and im sorry if you didnt want that, but thats my opinion, you have good promise showing, just gotta work for it (like me =/)!

Smile just trying to help you

    Hi Fishspawn...

    Nice efforts....

I would like to give a small comment on your lines..not that your stuff is bad ...i'm just trying to help you make things better...

there's a certain point about your line which you can improve....

    avoid 'catscatching'...
this may reflect a lack of confidence in your lines.
take bold strokes, this is one way of overcoming the fear of the 'big white' paper.

also, it would be great to avoid 'shading', unless you are doing a study...
Shading may turn out to be a way to beautify and hence justify our drawings.
try achieving the third dimension with lines...

Hope this is helpful and not offensive...

Its so nice to make your way to laguna...
I couldnt even make it to an arts college...purely because I couldnt afford it.
Its all your effort that pays and i can see you have what it takes too...

feel free to ask for help..there are a ton of more talented people than me over here and they are all such sweethearts...

    So go on mate...

You may delete this message after reading.
It would be great to have you on board my sketchbook..
    welcome.

    manu.

End of semester blowout pt 1

Woo, finishing up a long and difficult semester. Here is all of the stuff I did for my Concept Sketchbook Ideation class. The goal was to come up with creatures, people, places and things that you would find visiting an alien planet. We started out designing a little story and then quickly moved into design! It was a lot of work but i learned a lot about design and rendering.

Anyone who has been following my stuff for a little while can sit back and laugh at the fact that a year ago I couldn't even take anything past a rough sketch

Also I've entered the cgsociety steampunk challenge under the username Solais if anyone wants to stop by my thread As always crits/advice are welcome, enjoy!

    End of Semester Pt II

    thanks grandmassa

Here is my final work from environment design class. I was an art director for a mini-project where each of three teams had to come up with a "base" design and think in terms of story and function. My team decided to do "sci-fi Maya" where they are obsessed with observing space to defend against asteroids. The first four are my illustrations and the last one is a top-down view of the map with everyone in my group's stuff laid out by location.

As always I appreciate advice Enjoy~

Hey Wes! Sorry for not popping in a while. Anyway, I agree with Sev, your concept design is improving, really nice to see you progress and evolve.

But! Colour! You still need to work on that, so far I see you hang around fairly unsaturated values around grey, not utilising the full range that is available to you. Get Hawthorne on Painting, I cannot recommend it enough! Also try doing small thumbnail colour studies, concentrating on putting down the right spot of colour next another spot of colour.

    Now put some updates up

rayk - thanks, yeah i'm kind of hesitant about color at this point, but I'm going to work really hard at understanding it this semester!

jdeegz - >.> yeah I was totally lazy over christmas vacation, gotta remind myself why I want to make video games some times

meticulous - thanks for stopping by! will do~

Wow I got replies without even posting! So I was going to put up a bunch of scans of figures and stuff yesterday and my desktop completely broke! I had to reinstall the operating system and everything >.< So here is some stuff from costume design class last week. Its all studies from ref or model, learning drapery mostly.

Also here is a flier for a workshop my school is throwing to help some of us go to GDC, so if you're in southern california you should check it out!

still working hard. On the environments, set up and perspective are way better in the reffed set. paintings look good. The girl in red is definitely a step up. There's no way she'd carry here weaps straight up and down though. And the gold mustaches needs more highlight bling, looks like an actual weird mustache. Keep going man, stuff is showing improvement.

Costume design for this week. The ones without color are 5 min poses, the others are 20 min poses. The last one was the homework - combine two period styles and create a costume. Crit me up!

Here are some color studies from Ratchet and Clank and Resistence concept art, some 5-15 min composition sketches from stills of the Iron Giant, a 2 hour speedpaint from my imagination, and some 25 minute figure paints in PS.

Ninja update 5! Face doodles, costume drawings from slides, and model drawings. Pretty much each individual thing was done in about 5 mins.

Hey man, the resistance and ratchet studies look good. I think your values are off on the iron giant and robot sketches, (though I can't see the still) they're all midtone, the shadows are near the same value as stuff getting hit by light. Even if they are close in value in the still, they still have to be enough different in value to tell which is light. As far as simplifying shapes for studies, it's important to figure out what you're trying to learn from the study. Just copying it quickly without focusing on a single aspect isn't going to do much. On the iron giant ones, if you're focusing on composition, then color and value are hugely important, and getting large flat areas of color with clear borders instead of choppy whatever. If the shapes and colors get confused, then the idea you're trying to simplify doesn't carry at all. I'd say the concept art studies have good value ranges and the shapes read pretty well. Those are nice little thumbs. Face studies look good too.
