i haven't been commenting much in anyone's sb since i've been chastened... but...
i know exactly what you mean by your last rant. in fact, i've discussed similar things with my former teacher (current friend). the outcome of our discussions has always been--it's about the concept. in LA, there are a fucking ton of technically competent painters. but--i know this sounds arrogant on my part--not all that many of them have something to say.
my frustration has always been having something to say but being unable to catch it and get it out. and that has been a hell of a motivation for me to learn technique. once i saw someone do it in front of my own two eyes, i saw that it was possible.
eventually you'll get comfortable with the cycles all artists go through. periods of intense study, doldrums, unforced errors, steps backwards, dead ends. it's hell on the soul until you learn to go with your inner artistic flow.
these figure studies and anatomy studies and color studies you're doing are great. i do see a lot of progress here. and i'm not blowing smoke up your ass.
thanks for dropping by my sb regularly, i really appreciate it.

I totally agree. I know I have things things to say, but my language isn't good enough to speak them yet. Guess I gotta stop second guessing myself so much, stop thinking so much, and just DRAW!
Shoes... and Posemanic gestures... I do them regularly, no point posting all of them though.
Played around with Painters acrylic brushes, they work a treat.
And some character thumbnails.
Hello! Oh, when I said TP earlier in your thread, I just meant 'toilet paper'...its just a short way of saying it is all.
I, like a lot of people here, can relate to the wall you were describing with your art. You have already been given some motivation by a few people, however everyone will probably describe it differently.
I decided that if you want to get paid for art some day, you either DO it or you DONT. You wont get there without hard work, so if you know its what you want to do, you must keep going. If I don't make it, I will still value what my abilities are and the dedication it took...I will have a place somewhere, and if you keep on going, you will as well! For every 10 people that want to tackle concept art for a living some day, I bet 9 of them quit before they knew they had it in them.
Some people are more natural in areas - I for one am lacking the imagination side, for example, since as a concept artist you are greatly paid for 'ideas' correct? I think I will get over this once I take the benifits from all the studies and draw confidently! What is the largest thing you feel you need to achieve? Your studies have obviously improved.

fuck yeah man! you´re doing great i see. the posemaniac stuff looks real solid!
mooooar selfportraits! last one looks suuh-weeet-ah!
You have beautiful hand and feet studies, really cool stuff. Your figures are also very nice; one can sense your knowledge of human anatomy. All I have to crit is the matter of making your people "alive". Their expressions are a bit too static, like they were copied from a copy of a scan from a magazine.
Keep posting![]()
Your drawing skills are good, no doubt about that. Its good to see you mix the studies up with the odd imagination work. I feel you should do more drawings from imagination though. Studies are great but to draw from your head really tests what you've learnt from them.
Maybe you could take the studies into digital painting too, that should help you feel more comfortable with the medium. Its hard to think about more than one thing at a time, so still life work could help you focus more on just the painting aspects and not so much the design at this stage. Youve already done a bit of still life, if it helps do carry on with it!![]()

Danuh: Thank you.
Bendragon: Thanks man.
Long time no update.
Attended the latest MB workshop, was an amazing experience, gave me a lot to think about.
I don't think I'll update too much in the near future.
For some, art is a lonely journey, for others it's filled with influences - good and bad.
So I'm going to take a less crowded route for awhile.
See you later.![]()
Whatever, kiwiKeep playing with Painter, I keep finding new things every time I do. Funny program heh.
Nothin' wrong with some hermitude anyway. See you round!

Too bad you feel that way HK, your figures are some of the best I've seen. Of course I know you have experimented with animation in the past right?
improvment is very obvious here! keep up
Hey man, its David from the Welly workshop. What's all this 'I don't think I'll update too much in the near future'? How about 'I'll be updating less frequently but showing more progress between posts'? Gotta have that Positive Mental Attitude...
Looks like you have a lot of the same bad habits I do...heh. I mean, I'm reading your public confessions of self-doubt are like hearing an echo in my head...and the endless anatomy studies, the aimless focus on technical skills...
You've got much better line quality than most people, certainly better than mine, and getting the lines right the first time is a big hurdle. You also have a good grasp of form, a lot of your stuff has a nice sculptural quality (its obvious that Bammes clicked for you). You faces and heads actually look quite good, I'm jealous
All you need to do is DO MORE FINISHED WORK. I'm saying longer studies. More time per piece and going whole-hog on some techniques that you are not comfortable with.
Push the value contrast in all your work and the saturation in your color/paint pieces. You've already shown in a couple examples that you can capture the key values in a composition, and you can clearly map out the areas of light and dark, don't be afraid to just fill in those high and low points. Of course that's just the beginning, then you need to be ready to take a drawing that you're quite happy with and turn it into a potential bloody mess of rendering...that's how you're going to move forward.
As a small note, it would help to learn some more effective brush techniques (and then teach them to me). But be sure whenever you're experimenting with a technique to APPLY it to a finished illustration, and commit to pushing that illustration as far as it will go, until you're just sick of it.
being a hermit is great sometimes but you still need someone to beat the self-doubt out of you. You haven't got time for that, you need to ask yourself how you can succeed, not how you can fail.

“When forced to work within a strict framework,
the imagination is taxed to its utmost – and will
produce its richest ideas. Given total freedom,
the work is likely to sprawl.”

Hmm, you've got great linework in your sketches, but I think you could benefit from rendering out your sketches more-like you do in your paintings, which are great by the way.

iolarnula: Yeah, Painter is pretty fun.
cout<mecha: Thanks dude. Reply is in your SB.
AndreRuben: Thank you.
BludHund: Very much appreciate the kind words, Dave. Replied in your SB.
Max Challie: Good videos, thanks.
Kim_bot: Thanks. I still am trying to push myself to finish drawings...
I'm think I've had enough 'hermitude' for the time being.
There's no way I can resist gawking at other artwork (and being influenced by them) for very long.
So here I be once again, sans sketch dump. Can't bothered scanning too much.![]()
new stuff looks great, dude! the planar studies kicks ass. more!
Wow, hunter killer I don't know how I've never seen your work here,( we'll i just got started last year), but your lines are amazing and the motion of your figures is good. I'll check back again for sure, good stuff!!

Small dump. Studies and life drawings.
looking sweet man, for this study you might want to have some contrast between the edges (have the back softer so it gets pushed more into the background etc, keep it up man! your life drawings look heaps better than mine lol.....![]()
paperX: Cheers for crit, Allan. Nah my life drawings are suck. x.x
Colours just became a little bit more fun after reading Lin Ran's tutorial!
I think one my of weak points with colour now is using too much saturation.
One thing that stuck out to me while colour picking some photos of natural scenes is how muted the colours actually are (more apparent when seeing it on the RGB slider than in the colour picker).
An enviro study and a colour study of a Studio Ghibli painting from Totoro.
Also a couple of small oil studies that I've started doing.
sweet studies man, altho now the colours might be too musted lol... you might want to have some saturation for contrast still![]()
paperX: Thanks, dude.
Finished off a study from awhile ago, and then a self portrait, which started in colour but ditched it coz it sucked ultra bad.
Is that watercolour on a paper towel? If it is, it looks good. Funny that, I tried on cartidge paper and that was interesting. Latest self-portrait is good too.
Max: Yes, it is on paper towel. Just experimenting.
Haven't done anatomy studies in a while...
And some more.
Some lame life drawings...
wow, great amount of studies and they sure are paying off.
I especially love the last painting of the headsculpt. the colors look reaaally good on that one!
keep it up.
daaaaang bro, fucking tight studies. gonna have to second monotony about that planar head study. really awesome!
Hi HunterKiller, nice work in here mate!
Studies look like there going really well [really dig the life drawings), and you seem to have a better grasp of colour too.
I'm looking at going to Freelance AS next year so I'm always really pleased when I see guys like you producing such cool work.
Kinda a stupid question, but would you recommend freelance for someone who's looking to getting in to illustration/concept art?
Looks like you've come along way since 06 mate, keep it up.
cheers
matt
