    JPS Sketch Book

    Hi all, donno if it's appropriate to start my sketch book b4 everyone here knowing me. Since I haven't been drawing any finished pieces recently, so instead throwing them all arround into other sections, i decided to put all my recent sketches here.

    ok to briefly introduce myself, my name is jay, 22YO, located in Auckland-New Zealand. I major in software engineering (errr has nothing to do with this XD) but compared with what we do in uni i found myself more interested in drawing as my career (pls dont ask y i didnt take arts >.<) Luckily i just started my first concept work as a parttimer (i havent graduated yet)....so here i am, a very very starter in this concept area, need serious critics and helps from u guys!

    [OLD WORKS]
    My old works and most of the recent ones can be found at http://ichitakaseto.deviantart.com

    [CONCEPT] old -> new

    [ILLUSTRATIONS] old -> new

    Great stuff! Like Ferg said, loose but tight. Just remember the basics, form, proportion, composition, and the rest will fall into place! Keep it up!

    J.Pan, I'm wondering how you got into your art style, and what methods or practices you used to reach something you found personally acceptable? i try to practice often, but become frustrated with my results. What would you recommend to do life studies, or more studies of other artists work?
    Thank you.

    BTW, your art is phenomenal. For the last picture, i would say that the colors and general concept works, but the fin itself would have to be more rigid to propel her through the water.
    Look, you know what I mean. You take a bunch of people who don’t seem any different from you or me, but when you add them all together you get this sort of huge raving maniac with national borders and an anthem.

    about styles, i think it;s just an abstracted term that doesn;t 'physically' exist. Everyone has his own approach to draw something, and of source this is strongly influenced by what u see and learn from the outside world. I personally think strong basic drawing skills are essential prior to styles. Then i think the first thing u need to sort out in ur head is WHAT style u wanna draw in, so you can tend to pay more attentions to similar works done by others and learn from them. Style is really developed through a long time of practices, speaking of myself, i dont even know if my own style has be fully developed or not.

    yeah that mermaid concept is just a quick practice, is lacks of careful thinkings, i will need to think more to refine it. thanx for the tips : )

    I understand what you mean by the abstracted terms, but i think i have to clarify my question.

    What i meant was: what kind of practices did you use to hone your skills, especially in body proportion and facial structure in such a manga/realism style?

    Did you study other artists work, or just flail away until you hit the spot? Any help would be appreciated, as i am an aspiring artist.

    umm sry, english is not my 1st language...XD

    ok before i could draw straight from my head, I copied alot other ppl's work, mostly from manga style works, like dragonballZ, I''S, lovehina...couldnt name them all, simply i tried to mimic everything that i found atractive. To be honest i doono which one influenced me the most. Maybe the idea of being open to different styles has resulted how i end up drawing now.

    i havent studied other ppl's work in details, by i did pay much attention to some artists like FALCOON, Yocky, the author of BLADE of Immortals, 大宪章 Hyung-ae Kim0, Feng Zhu....(really alot), as u might noticed the path i took is more about line drawing (i personally divide styles into 2 categories: line and brush, if u know what i mean), if u feel more like to be a brush guy, then i'd recommand Crieg Mullin, WASSUP....

    as i said, if u already have in mind of what style u prefer, go find similar works and copy and study them, that;s the best way i see to approach.

    hope it helps
