Vehicle Designs: Skoda

I got scolded for being thick and putting old work in the environments thread, so heres something new.
Its a conservative Skoda saloon intended for production in a couple of years, done as a job application thing. Its a bit of a dodgy design but was lots of fun to do.
Shout to SpackToy for some excellent feedback for the front.

I like the second better. They both look good, but the front of the first seems a little too short.

Yeah its a bit stubby innit? Hmmm.
Its Biro with lots of Photoshop over the top, total build time from sketch to sign off was probably 10 hours each, with a lot of drinking coffee, watching Neighbours and skinning up in between.

2nd looks more natural - but the front wheel lets it down (ellipse too big)

I like them both but it bugs me abit that you can't see any tire rubber at all on the side of the tiers, hubcaps (is that the name of thooe plastic things you put on the side of the tiers? sorry but sometimes I forget words..) usually don't cover that much and I doubt it woul actually be possible to make them cover that much.. atleast not without breaking them when driving down a normal road (that usually has quite a few bumps in it ). I like the car, it looks really neat, but the tire area just looks akward to me.

Nikita I'm totally with you on this; lots of designers have a bit of a love-hate relatinship with cartoon wheels in that on the one hand they stupidly easy to do and can add punch to the image, but on the other they do look rediculous. Personally I normally stick on reasonably realistic tyres but thought I'd have some fun with this and make it a Hotwheels toy!

The front wheel of ther rear 3/4 is out of wack isnt it, like he's cracked a kerb...

Keep the feeds coming though, I knew CAO wouldnt let me down!

Oww I do love fast cars.. and that one is just screaming speed even if I do like it better from behind (don't ask but I think msot cars look hotter from behind ).

Gonna bug you about the tiers again though, on the top one it looks like the front tire is actually standing on the rim in the bottom edge, loving it otherwise though.. more fast cars plox

But once again there's something int the front (in the second car) that looks weird to me...
I guess it is just me...

Crit for the first one (Coming at us), he perspective on the grille(sp?) seems a bit off... other than that I love it,

good stuff! i really like the highlights and reflections you've rendered in the first car. i'd agree with the wheels vs tire thickness comments though. that was the first thing that caught my eye. i know you're going for a different tire concept here, but it doesn't quite seem credible. another thing about that first shot - it seems to be turning to its left sharp enough to make the suspension dip, so it might help to make the front wheels turning much more pronounced. the red one is sweet too. the perspective on the steering wheel is a little off, but barely noticeable. nice work blex!

Man I love this site, the crits are reliably incisive and positive. So the consensus is against 'car designer' wheels; I think you're right there guys, although theyre so ubiquitous that modern real alloy wheels have ballooned to more closely tie the finished car with the concept sketches.

These are signed off (I got the job btw hehehe) but I'll use these crits for the next ones and update this thread.

So apart from me and SpaceToy, are there any other auto geeks here? Or anyone who has a really cool scene but needs a vehicle for it? Let me know.

Really? Quality. I used to work in a Landrover garage and a junkyard as a teenager; I've never been very good at fixing cars, much to my dads disgust but I love drawing them, or buying them off Ebay and seeing how fast I can go before the exhaust falls off (132mph).

You should have a go at drawing some; Spacetoy's a pro and might give you a few tips if he can tear himself away from lighting £20 notes from £20 notes to light his cigars. (They make crazy money at his level; he only lives in a silver bungalow but his boss has a platinum house, no joke!) And youre in Gothenburg, home of the 96 BTTC 850 Estate- drools!

I'll draw a wizard or a dragon or something if you draw a car....

Hmm that volvo, is thata re-work of the xc90 or an actual conecpt of it before it went in to production?

And well I did have a go at trying to draw a racing car (NASCAR ) about 2 years ago.. ehh didn't turn out great, but sure I'll draw a car if you draw a dragon... but well I am probably one of the less talented and educated artists around here (no education, been drawing for about 3-4 years.. so ya I'm kinda far behind you XD)

and Gothenburg pwns simply cause of the fact that we got the volvo headquarters here *drives an white, somewhat rusty 740 thats almost as old as she is* XD

Haha my dads terrible for these Volvos; he's got a S60 3.0, an old 960 and several of those 480 wedges to muck about with, but he wont help me weld my Alfa the bastard.

The Volvo was just a cynical attempt to do something vaguely relevant, cos i like drawing spaceships more than cars.
So, a dragon eh? I cant stick Lord of the Rings or any of that fantasy stuff normally, but the artwork on here is so good that its kind of won me over. I'll get back to you Nik!

Anyway I think I managed to get this kinad off topic, but well I'm just gonna finnish up a dragon (the pose is driving me nuts ) and then I'll get to work on a car, might take a month or so though.. but ya I'll do it (especialyl if you remind me to XD).. now to buy some icecream for my sore throat, and then back to drawing (finally found a place to work with my A2 papers.. it's called a wall )
