    Color study for today. Wanted to start moving into other lighting types. Also, felt like I was being too sloppy with the other ones, and actually did a bit of drawing to start things out.

    Pretty happy with the result from a digital painting perspective. Color needs work- threw in a guy with a torch at the end as I was running out of steam.

    Contemplating extending these over a couple days so I can bring them to a better level.

    Some color studies from film trailers. Also trying to do a quick study from classic animations each, with three purposes. The first is to understand constructive drawing, the second is to better understand general animation drawing, and the third is to get more comfortable drawing on the tablet. Here's a recent batch of those along with the color studies.

    nice work, as usual

    Particularly liked the drawing of the guy with environment, his head is turned up. Is that from Grimaldi's class?

    @Lena - Actually, that was from Costa Vavigiakis's class, which I was in for a while before Grimaldi's. There was a great show in the gallery next to the classroom of old academic drawings from the League's early history that I was learning a lot from during that drawing. Almost all of the old drawings were charcoal, so I was trying to glean what I could from them, including the weird smudge of charcoal in the upper right corner (as far as I could tell they used it as a pool of pigment to brush or stump onto the drawing). The other drawing from that batch is from Grimaldi's class.

    @Zarahn- thanks!

    Nice to see you hitting the sketchbook lately. Does putting the figures in their simplest shapes like on this last group really help you wrap your head around the forms in space?

    Hi Shehaub!

    Yes- the box you see around a lot of objects helps keep the forms straight in space. It makes it really clear which direction they're facing and sets up the major axes for the perspective. We have a tendency to want to make things like eyes or mouths on a line parallel to the bottom edge of the paper when often due to perspective they are not. The box helps combat that. It also sets up a concrete space for me to work with, which is helpful with symmetry and proportion. I am always dividing the box or adding to it (usually dividing).

    I've found this really helps me internalize things when working from life for drawing later for imagination. It's also really useful when the model shifts position. I can say things like "Well, even though they've moved I can still see that the bottom of the nose is about halfway between the eyes and chin on this model", and I can still divide my box accordingly. This is pretty useful on the train where I do a lot of my sketching and people tend to move around a lot.

    Thanks for stopping in!

    I really like how you are making sense of the form in 3d. It is like a visual note taking.

    Here's a portrait I finished over the winter but had a really hard time photographing. I finally threw it on the scanner and stitched it together. The scan still has a bit of annoying glare from the varnish, but it's miles better than the photos I was getting of it.
