CHOW piece- "Mary of the Blue Lights". Two unfortunate things with this piece:

    1) Done before the brush breakthrough mentioned in the last post, so the edges are pretty out-of control and I spent a ton of time trying to manage them

    2) Didn't name my file properly, so it was disqualified from the CHOW final poll. Don't think I did the sketch justice anyway...

Hey there, I'm really diggin' this sketchbook so far. I agree with what others have said about working with your tones more to help bring out some depth.

Other than that i'm especially liking what you're doing with the Dr.Who piece, it looks like a little statue! look forward to seeing it done.

Today's composition of the day: "Above the Painted Plains"

@AustenFM- thanks for stopping by. I hear you about the tones. It's actually a conscious decision I was making a while ago, but I've since moved away from it. Good thing, because soooo many people were mentioning it!

    @DeeLock: Thanks!

Here's the daily compositions from this past weekend. Was out of town and didn't have time to post them until today (but at least I get them done!).

They're taking on a bit of a life of their own and forming into a story. Not sure where it's headed, but it's getting fun.

Also, my final piece for the Dr. Who CHOW. We got a late start heading back from out of town and hit some traffic so I wasn't able to take it to quite the level I'd hoped, but it was still a big improvement from my last piece so I'm pretty happy with it.

Edit: I keep forgetting the titles/captions for the composition sketches. First one is "Under Redwing Bridge", the second one is "At Gotteren Falls"

Composition of the Day: "The Show"

Not really happy with the way this one turned out. I don't think I worked it out well enough at the thumbnail stage. Will have to try this one again.

Composition of the Day: "The Escape"

@Shehaub: Thanks for stopping back in! I hope to start turning these into illustrations when I get the time. I often find when I do have the time I suddenly have trouble coming up with something to work on. This way I can have a nice stockpile of ideas to choose from...

    Hey Shehaub

For these little composition sketches I start out with a bunch of little thumbnails, then do the "final" composition sketch in a little 5x7 sketchbook which I have on me pretty much all the time.

I've only been doing it for a little bit, but doing it daily has been great. I'm learning a lot. They've actually started developing into some kind of a story...

Will probably put today's composition up tomorrow- I'll likely be away from the internet for the rest of the day and didn't get the composition done in class today.

Composition of the Day (from yesterday): "The Fox Returns"

Wasn't really happy with the way this one came out. Totally missed the feeling I was going for. Will have to take another stab sometime.

Composition of the Day: "The Challenge"

Spent a bit more time than usual on this one since I'm not trying to squeeze it in on breaks at work, and to prove something to myself after I wasn't happy with my past two. I'm including the thumbnail for today's- I took it much further than I normally do and I think it helped a lot for the bigger sketch.

Those last two are several notches above the earlier ones. Good drama on that first one, the gesture of the potential blow, the lightning shapes, the little fox trying to protect the girl. The blue pencil helps liven things up. I also like the design of that minataur, it's size and the flames and pose bring something a little different to a classic character. The story is very clear.

I agree with Armando on the Minotaur. I think the size creates a nice dramatic effect. I am really enjoying watching this story unfold, one sketch at a time.

Composition of the Day: "Snakeskin and Thread"

Decided to take a break from the girl and the fox. Was getting bogged down developing the plot along with the sketches. I think I have a good base of stuff from that to mold into something more finished later. Not sure if that would be an illustrated story or a comic or what, but the characters have developed to a point where the story is writing itself. I just need the time to let that run its course.

Today's is based on a drawing I did years ago that I liked, but that had some compositional problems I was never able to sort out.
