Here are some finished graphite pieces...

Some of you may have already seen some of these, I felt I should post everything in one place.

Here is a cover that I did for "Shout" magazine, a free local publication in my area. This will be printed sometime this summer.

Thanks Ivan, I really enjoy graphite. It's one of those mediums that you can use anywhere. That kind of freedom really appeals to me. I'm working on combining graphite and watercolor in some of my sketches, so I should have some color stuff soon. They way that ideas come to me, I don't know where I will be so I have to make sure I can draw them right away. It's kind of fun.

NEwayz, this stuff is looking good, you know i like it. I'm envious of the control that you weild over the pencil... very, very impressive. my favorites are the compositions with all kinds of figures, monsters, plants, graphic elements and shit. so lovely.

Grack-rock! Wow, I'll have to use that one sometime. What shall I use to sign your ass with? Hmmmm, let me take a look around. Oh, here we go, I just happen to have a red-hot piece of iron......

Graphite is cool, but I'm working on other mediums too. Unfortunately, most people don't take graphite seriously as a finished medium. It's not bright and shiny enough, I guess.

I shall tell the Stamps of your friendly salutations.

    Thanks for the warm welcome!

your pencil work is amazing. I love the variety of textures and values you squeze out of your media. Do you use one single level of hardness(hb,b,2h,etc) or do you have a set of pencils or somthing? I also like your line work, its very light and sketchy, with lots of movment. My only crit is on the second female pic, she seems kinda stiff. But I like how she looks 3d even without shading.

Hey Buckweisel, I use a mechanical pencil with either hb or 2b lead. I vary the pressure and sometimes I will combine the two hardnesses, but mostly I just use one. The key is to maintain a consistent angle on the lead. That way, you always have a nice broad area to create gradients and also a fine, sharp point for fine lines and darker areas. I kind of move back and forth between shading and defining with line.

A lot of my figures look rather stiff. I think that reflects the stress of having a crappy job and trying to make it as an artists. Also, the more sketches that are completed of a figure, the more they loosen up. Both of those female sketches are the first renderings of each respective idea.

Your shading is amaazing. I love the 'shout' one. It really makes me think, and I discover something new each time I look at it! Reminds me very much of those old fairy tales that I'd read when I was younger.

Sweet! That's what I was going for, Jakien. I'm more drawn to older styles than I am to more modern stuff. That will probably come back to bite me in the ass, but you have to follow what you love.

    hey buddy,
our drawing session went VERY well today...Your handle was mentioned with great gnashing tears of regret that you weren't there (and with my tears also about my blaring TV accusation the other day where i really got a rise out of you... got your goat.)

Glad to hear it guggen, it sounded like a really cool opportunity to get some delicious sketches. I'll try to come up with my own version of what I think you saw. Won't that be fun? But, before I do that I need sleep. I just finished my piece for the COW topic so I'll need to store up the creative juices for a couple of hours until I can go again.

Thanks again for your kind words, my friend. Here are the specs for the drawing: It is 7"x8" and created with graphite (hb) with a mechanical pencil on bristol board.

Wow, it just so happens that one of my favorite past times is usurping power from others!! This will be fun (although, I think people around here are a bit biased against traditional media) I'll keep at it if you keep viewing!

These are done in my Moleskine sketch book. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. They are so choice.

Thanks, magicgoo! Beasties are my favorite thing to draw. I really like how they have the creature of the week contests. But, I'm going to be spending most of my time on the calender and the last man standing, so I won't be participating in the COWs for a while. I was thinking of some how incorporating a creature in my calender image, but I'm not sure yet. See in you in the girlie thread!

holy crap nice looking update grack!

    this one is my favorite,
though i was wondering if this sketch might indicate what your rough pencils look like before rocking the full grendelgrackolicious rendering treatment on them? special treat...I just got a moleskine myself and am planning on embarking upon an all-graphite adventure to a land where i can draw myself out of a paper bag, so i'll definitely be hitting you up for some of your voracious, infinite, pencil wisdom.

metaphors... nott... working... must... leave... now.

awesome work --> can't wait to see what you blast out next g!

It's never a real thread without some guggenmaneuverability. Thanks again, Joel. Yeah, I've had my moleskine since last December. It's kind of like art candy. I draw in it just a little bit here and there and use my other generic sketch book to really hammer out the ideas. I don't erase much, so I go through a lot of pages of crap until I bust out something satisfactory. One reallllyyy nice thing about the moleskines is how the paper accepts ink. It's not too absorbent, yet the ink lays down quite smoothly and evenly. I haven't tried color washes yet, but I think they will look just as nice as the ink on that paper. Mmmmmmmm.....Have fun.

And yes, the evil horse sketch is indicative of what my drawing look like before I go crazy with the detail.

    Awesome GG!

wish though that the jpeg here were slightly larger... maybe like 600 x 800 so that i can see the ink detail... Nice foot, though i'd like to see the other one. The hair is totally pulling my eye in though... it's like a magical swirling orb that isn't. is this a wip? what else do you plan on doing with it? and also, where is the hidden dead dog head in this composition?
