    First Speed Paint

    First post, First Digital Painting.

I'm a 3d artist by trade, and have never tried to paint like this before, so bare with me. Hoping it will better my 3d skills. I've been so inspired by this community, that I thought I'd give some painting a try. And I tell ya, this was really fun. Lot's less to think about...of course, not an accomplished piece, but I'm hoping that posting it will keep me going.

Painter 7, just over an hour...

    Thanks for look'n!

Hey, thanks for the encouragement, man!

I hate it already. Too dark, not enough depth, muddy, and of course, lacking in detail. But hey, for a first try, I've done alot worse.

Thanks again, man. I'm just keep'n at it. Hopefully I'll get there.

I really like the piece, especially the color variation and separation of fore and background. Don't sweat the lack of depth etectera, since you are speed painting. The point is not to get every detail perfect. I really like it! The blades of the plant are very well done.

    Irate Customer:

Hey, thanks so much, man. I really apprecieate the encouragement. I hope I can get better at this, as it's making me really think through the 3d process from a more traditional angle. Still really need to work on my technique, and now that I've figured out painter 7, it's just practice, practice, practice.

    Thanks again.

    MattyMoo:

Painter is well, a traditional media approach to digital painting. Think of it as photoshop for painters. It's got hundreds of different art mediums to use, such as watercolors, markers, airbrushes, pencils, pens, impasto media, etc, etc, etc. All customizable.

If you have a tablet, the pressure and tilt of the pen can make brushes act like the real thing.

When you paint with water color, the pigment actually runs(really cool to watch), and you can use alot of 3d effects, like the impasto stuff to create tons of depth.

It's a neat program, certainly worth the cost. It has some issues, like you'l need a fairly beefy system to run it, and it is not the most stable at times, but I'd consider it must-have app for anyone doing digital drawing, sketching, painting, concept work, texture work, etc, etc.

    You can find it here:

    www.corel.com

It's up to painter 8 now, but I just don't have the funds to get it. 7 works great, though, all things considered. I've seen it on ebay for a lower price, so check there too.
