Maieth: Look for the 'MY ACCOUNT'-link (to your upper right), press it and you'll find a submenu called 'Settings'. Press that one and to your right you'll see a square with yet another link called 'Profile Picture'... that's where you upload your avatar... I think... (took me a while as well.)
(Now where do you change the text under the profile pic that initially says 'registered user'?...)

background
i know the problem with having a great background is manipulating the votes...but still at the end an awesome rendered image is nothing i want to reject or miss in here...also in the past we had many winners without a background at all, so at the end it comes to the strength of idea, design and execution. Use the background to support the concept...
resolution
The 800x600 preference is a suggestion if your piece is fine with this format and you can read everything...but sometimes you need a horizontal or vertical canvas or maybe details are getting lost when keeping it at 800x600...so if your piece needs it break out...other than that, most users have at least 1024x768, actually 1280x1024 i think, so the resolution rule needs an update actually

Generally, don't worry about posting. The worst that can happen is you don't make it into a poll voted on by a bunch of people you don't know, because somebody else you don't know didn't include you. You have to be extremely lame to get banned. I should know. I've survived on these forums for several months and I haven't had a real art class for 40 years.

click on "User CP" on the top left of the menu, there you can change anything related to your Profile, except your underwear.

You can enter whenever you want, but it might happen that your entry will be rejected when it doesn't fulfill certain quality standards or breaks any rules...but that's the worst that could happen, not being taken to the poll...it doesn't hurt really
