    Jacks Journal! - Asaba Maryland~

MORE EARLY IMAGES NOW LINKS TO SAVE BANDWIDTH

Yay, got me a sketchgroup too!

Here I am after a long time lurking, craving a place to deposit my daily ramblings and sketchbook fandangos.

I am finally drawing... not quiet properly but im drawing.

Since starting at artcollege back in october and meeting many interesting people, i finally feel like i can draw because they push me. It's weird and most definately nice to have people to draw with, like minded people.

My sketchbook aint anything special, however its mine so even if thats the only original thing about it, ill try harder! I really should be studying anatomy a lot harder than I am at the moment, as i just end up doing doodles while i tune out.

    Ack.

As its my first post ill backdate a little bit, so first off some stuff from last year.

This is more recent stuff, most of whats in this my current sketchbook has be done since er, about xmas time. Unfortunately ive kinda destroyed 2 sketchbooks after getting through some school projects.

Storyboarding and 2 character design projects take up alotta space, so my ickle sketchbook had its guts ripped out so i could shove it in a a3 folder.

Luckily for our course one of those character design projects was given to use from some guy at lionhead, one of the animation dudes came in and gave us a nice talk... good stuff.

I hope he was a little bit interested in the thing i finally came up with.

    More stuffs!

i like your stuff. i dont really have many critiques but to keep exploring new things that you dont normally draw and keep practicing on the things that you do draw currently. i like your style, especially in the first batch of drawings. keep up the good work,

When i started drawing again back in highschool i was so stuck in my way using practically pencil only and not being able to sketch, id be really focused on details and try to do everything first time through.

I stopped drawing for about 2 years after that too, i started up again, just sketching and trying to better myself about 2 and a half years ago, its taken about that long to finally be able to sketch comfortably and to not be quiet as retarded and use different materials.

When i realised it had been 2 years since i started drawing again it through me, i was actually disappointed, although its only been a year since ive been drawing remotely seriously. I mean... this time last year i was drawing for my interview and since then ive got through... 4? sketchbooks and 2 of those i practically finished when i started my course.

    Gah, enough self hate!

So anyway, this was my take on Lyra. This was the project the dude from Lionhead gave us!

    http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...hat/new9_1.jpg

I've got more sketches buuuut they arent scanned in!

I did a more finished painting of lyra but she ended up looking a little too ... old and not quiet as sweet as i had intended. My sketch was better.

Ok, This post will be the last of my sketchbook for a while, my digital camera, which most of these are taken with, eats batterys. And i mean eats, i was lucky to get this much out of it.

I probably wont have access to the mega uni scanner till er, 24th of april so the updates that ill give will mainly be digital studies!

Which until i started watching the anime, Major, i was doing 1 or 2 a day... damn thats a good series!

So, towards the bottom is the more recent stuff in my sketchbook. Ive mainly been doodling heads in my sketchbook, its my way of neglecting anatomy because ive at least studied how to construct a head, whereas ive no clue on how to go about the body.

    http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...at/new11_1.jpg

    http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...hat/sb2_15.jpg

    http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...hat/sb2_13.jpg

So anyway, i guess you could call this an introduction... I'll try and keep on updating for those who are interested!

jzeltman - Thanks, I commented on someones character designs the other day and i realised just how much i should push my boat out more and draw things im unfamiliar with. As of late ive still only really been drawing heads, which i feel quiet comfortable with!

Your first batch has a fun outlined style which I love. Nice shading and sketching overrall.

The second figure in your last post is really nice. Even though it's reclined it has a sort of snap that makes it very appealing to look at.

It looks like they've got you doing a good variety of excrcises in college.

Most of the stuff i do in my sketchbook that doesnt get ripped out is just stuff i do for myself.

    Thanks for the comment revender.

An a quick picture from today, i need pushing to do more environments as most of the stuff i do is people :<

    http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h9...04painting.jpg

More mistakes than you can shake a stick at.

I get a bit stuck when drawing people from a reference. When im drawing from my head i go about constructing it like : http://www.anticz.com/heads.htm

However when im drawing from a reference i try and draw what i see, with only a little bit of planning... i think i should still be trying to rough it out though. Frustrating

    A couple of quick speedpaintings.

The first one was coming on quiet nicely and about 1/2 way through i was quiet confident in the way it was turning out. Then i pissed it all away, oh well.

Second is a study? i guess. Reffed from: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/26714723/

I was more concered with the pose and anatomy rather than the lighting really, i was painting on one layer in opencanvas as well so i couldnt easily change the background afterwards, hence - red. (gradiented in photoshop)

Both of em took about, er 50mins?

I'm a little iffy about approach to take, and ive kept my linework in these so excuse the mess. As of now i sorta rough shit out before i start slapping color in... makes me feel a little more at ease when ive got outlines. Aint sure if thats a good or bad thing.

The lighting is a bit botched in these but i was mainly concered with the pose, these all took roughly about an hour each, id like to get more done in this time really.

(I saw someone saying something about photoshops autolevels and how its good if it doesnt change anything. What exactly does it do?)

Sorry for the mishmashed face on the second one, didnt spend that long getting it sorted :< still, happy that the cloth looked ok.

    2 More pictures!

I used a reference for them both and er, first one took about 1.5hours, i got really into it. Never got around to sorting out her body though so thats a bit fucked up. Second one took about 45mins. The tigers face is a bit titsup, the nose / mouth / eye aint quiet there. :<

Not done 2 pictures in 1 day for ages, been way too hooked on anime. Major is such a fucking good series.

Keep it up, man! Nice sketches and colour studies are here. You have feeling of form and your line is energetic. Study of a sitting woman with red background is just great. Cheers!

Ok heres a BIG update, ive not been doing much for a while now, got into Wow again and just lazed around towards the end of my holidays, hell now that im back im still being way too lazy.

Anyway, i could go into a lot more detail about what ive been upto but i really doubt anyones interested in that.

Past few days ive been drawing a lot more... maybe more than before, reason being is that im at my computer. I dunno what it is but I feel really at home at my pc desk with my music on / able to load up webpages... just keeps my mind busy without being in a stuffy room with myself and my head for company.

So, mainly doodles but ive started on the Loomis book... with a little more focus on learning, might not be the most interesting things to look at but if you can give me some C&C it would be much appreciated.

    EDIT, MADE IT TWO POSTS.

Last coupla pages, first one made me think id leik mega regressed but i tried to crack on and fill it with pap anyway to hopefully get it outta my system, second one is a character i was knocking around with, theres some issues with it at the moment but ill carry on and try to iron them out. I was trying to keep clean good lines too but i guess that doesnt really show.

I think ill get around to coloring my second guy and ironing out his powarfist thingeh cuz at the moment im not entirely sure where i wanna go with it.

Color update of the previous picture, trying out a different way of doing things and its turning out really relaxing.

The metal is looking pap but ill work on that, its also unfinished overall, especially the face... Good fun!

Keeping with the... keeping shit simple theme heres another. Im glad how this one came out although from the nose onwards it sorta goes downhill, ugh ill keep it up.

Is it good practice to be using Greyscale to get a feel for value instead of color? Should i practice both? I should i get a feel for it in greyscale first?

It's great practice to use greyscale to get a feeling for value instead color! You get less distracted by different color hues that may or may not be the value you actually want.

Eventually you would move into color "color theory" (as I guess it's called) and your prior knowledge of value with greyscale with help out there a lot. Idiot_Apathy, for instance, has awesome color abilities, and check this out, we can see in greyscale stuff that his value skills are pretty darn spiffy as well.

I was looking for stuff on color theory a while ago, i remeber seeing a really good guide ages ago but i couldnt find it again. If i remeber correctly there was a picture of a rat/women and it was talking about the different values and moods, was really indepth.

Thanks for the pointer, browsing his thread now \o/

Could learn something about the amount of texture he gets into his pictures

For my artcollege project we had to design a seacreature, I think we are pretty free to do some crazy shit but i sorta bailed and did a varient sorta thing. I like the idea of gargantuan things, something insanely huge so im a big fan of the whale shark, only mine will be about 75 metres in length! So without keeping it just to one thing i shoved a manta ray in there too because .. they look fucking cool, not sure how it would work in reality. A shark/whale with huge wing like things, dunno if i want it flying or swimming yet.

Oh and ill try and update with more substance from now on, no more 1 picture posts, it'll be 2 (ideally more ) or 4+, unless i want a bit of feedback i guess.

These were my first attempts at something underwater and it shows in the first one more so than the other, i fell foul of the colorpicker a lot on the first ones because i couldnt get some areas of the water right, the brights/darks were ok but the inbetweens were a weird blue/tur...cant spell that color :p

(these are still sorta early in my head... im gunna sketch the stuff out so itll look more feasable, as is its basically reffed photos with little differences I cheated. First the ray second the whaleshark, both easily found on google, google.)

    So, here the lovely is!

    GO RAYLE!

Love the studies you've done. Your colour work has really come on in leaps and bounds as well.

The last two look nice. Very ethereal.
