LOL ! Yeah, we will see ! But I think the topic is cool, very open...
And we will have to turn that into an illustration, you know. It will be not only a question of "stunning design", so many elements/factors have to be include in... Hum, hope this last sentence sounds like good ol' english ! lol !

Aside that: how come the evolution stuff ? Any update ? Can't wait to see that, it's really a good thing to see all that stuff link to such a cool topic/subject.

    Cheers, my friend.

I like your sketch for trash monster, there is something awkward about his face though, I think its that the top part of his face goes in one direction and the jaw goes in the other. I wish I could have finished mine, but it was bothering me too much. I did the textures on your medical illustration piece. You should do an after effects med ill piece of the image that flip posted in thunderdome thread. Keep up the good work.

    hey b!
with the left shoulder - what do you see that needs attention? it's situated below the folds of skin, so i'm trying to convey that the shoulder girdle is more beneath the body than right up on top - this allowed for the beast to run and breathe at the same time. I may have to move the right arm down beneath the body a bit more in order to convey this. hmmm. input is appreciated!

Hey Matt - thanks for the feedback on the trash monster - totally agree! There's so much shite in there that's wonky, that it's hysterical. As you can see, I really didn't have a plan for this one. It's very shoddy to say the least.

    Mmmmmm

delicious! I suppose the yellow is supposed to be a fatty coating on the arterial wall? nice--> does the word "build" in the file name meaning that it's a part of a series of images that "builds" to create an image or to show a progression of things? If that is the case, i can forgive that uncomfortably saturated level of the yellow; although i suppose that having two seperate elements (the other being the adrenal glands) which needed to be yellowish in one composition may have influenced your choice. Or it was a clients wish.

amphibian is looking good--> keep busting these out dave... the textures you are getting totally take these out of the digital realm. keep up the great work!

yeah, the adrenals need to be their true color (but didn't want to compete with the plaque). that plaque buildup is the focus, so....the saturation got ramped up. i may step it back a bit, but not too much. a follow up exhibit will have a bit extra detail added to the mix. gotta get crackin' on this project. sheesh. don't know why i'm so slow when it comes to my own crap. hah!
and thanks for the continued boost support, my man....i'll be postin' the dimetrodon in a few.

the chin seems to follow the shape of that tooth, I would have expected it to be more in line with the rest of the jaw.

Ok, let me see if I can explain what i mean regarding his left shoulder...I think if you move it back and to our right, it will look more natural. you're suggesting from the stripe on his back that his spine is curving to his left, but you have his shoulders squared to the picture plane.

that jaw is kind of scoop shaped with a recess to allow the canine to come down (the reptilian version of a sabertooth tiger).
i'll look into that shoulder tomorrow morning. thanks bud!

here's the dimetrodon - sheesh 2.5 hrs of speed painting/research. no longer why i'm burnt out at the end of the week.

Hi Rob! What a treat it is to have you here! Yeah, the med illus helps, but actually, it's the creatures that help my med illus more than the other way around. The evolution stuff is really helping me too. Your work has been off the charts lately....! Bravo!

Man. You're going to be onto another sketchbook before I make page 5.

I love watching the evolution series. I wish I had more to comment on for it, but I'm content to sit back with the tub of popcorn and watch the show. I will say something is looking a little funky in the dimetrodon's back leg. The lighting doesn't seem to follow the source you've indicated elsewhere-- the rim lighting around the "knee" area is a little too strong and detracts from the overhead front lighting. There's also a slightly disconnected feeling caused by the area where the leg meets the torso. I think it's becuase the folds indicate that the leg should be angled slightly towards us, whereas the contour and lighting on the leg make it look like it's parallel to the picture plane. Meh. I'm not positive in that analysis-- not enough coffee yet.

Keep up the killer show D!!

Hey bro, I know you're under a ton of pressure as it is..but to echo
    Ben's crit,
That back leg of dimetrodon: The foot is too 'in line' with the axis of the body.
If the thigh is pointing outward the calf and foot would most likely follow suit. The calf as it is right now is tucked tight under the body and showing at profile, whereas perhaps a nice 3/4 would benefit. Also the skull itself is a bit off. The end of the snout and front teeth are no longer following the contour. It sorta looks like a half a second after he just got whupped in the head with a ginormous stick.
But other than that...pure gold bro. Lovin it!
    Cheers

Is it bad of me to say I wish your dinosaurs didn't look like 1960's Polar Lights model kits?

Don't get me wrong, red... I heart dinosaurs, and the work you're doing on these drawings is just fan-freakin'-tastic... just wish they were a little more dynamic. I reckon that your hands are kind of tied in light of these being educational though...

    Lookin' forward to more, more,more!

    bravo dave!
    so impressive...
i really dig the dimetrodon, one of my favorite dinos of all... and an old one too. What are your references / research images involving generally? I know how hard it is to create an entire illustration from scratch...a whole lot of work. I know that at the field museum in chicago they have a couple of nice dimetrodon fossil skeletons--> something like this would be an ideal reference, though usually impossible to come up with when you are several hundred miles away from it. haha the story of my life too far away from the reference

one minor crit--> seems like the shading of the eye would indicate an iris / pupil, which casts his glare directly at the viewer/or is it at something on the ground and may be somewhat problematic... maybe a more ambiguous pupil? It's hard to say, you are doing a great job friend; cranking out the mad sci-ill goodness 2 fast 2 furious.

hiya kc! it's totally ok. i don't have a clue as to what the 1960's polar lights model kits look like...push me a link so i can do me some comparisons. if i had a lot of time, i'd create several studies and then go to final on one in a dyanmic pose like you're requesting. i'm trying to do that on a few, and when i do, they take a bit longer to hit due to perspective, et al. but, i'll keep that in mind! thanks for poppin' in here!

hiya joel - i'll look into that eye and fix it, thanks! my research goes as follows: google the name, read as much as possible on life style and morphology as well as get images ranging from fossils to rebuilds to drawings to even movies. essentially, in a half hour, i'm doing as much r/d as possible. all of these drawings need to be done in about $200 worth of time. that equates to about 3 hrs. it's fast for me....wish i was a rendering machine, but i'm not....at least, not yet.

    cheers!
