One thing to note on your lizards/dinos. The feet seem a wee bit out of kilter. Maybe it's the perspective, not sure. Beautiful as a whole though, just trying to push it even further.

Hey red!
These look cooler than I remember, but... Here ya go!
At any rate, maybe you get the idea... I was thinking they looked rather stiff and... plastic.
The new and improved pic is much better... the only difference that I can really see (by scrolling up and down like a git...) is that the eye is different. Maybe you did a little more rendering too? Anyway, bitchin' stuff man!

Definitely better. It didn't pop out at me the way it did the first time through. Of course, now that I'm looking for it I can still see that it's "off", but it may be my bias that I'm coming to the picture with now. I would say that it's "fixed enough". Especially on the paying gigs, sometimes you just need to let it ride.
Love the nautiloid! Are the closer set of the downward pointing spines supposed to be drastically different in length? Most of the other spines look like match sets, but on that one set the one on our right is much longer than the other.
Can't wait for more! Extra butter flavor at the ready!
great dimensionality in that spiny nautiloid shell. he does have one tentacle that needs a glaze or something, it's a few shades lighter than the others and doesn't look like a highlight.

Julien - Hmm....don't have that particular CD in the iTunes stash. We'll have to look into that. I'll tell J he's got good taste.
Tensai - Yeah, that mess just came about on its own as I was trying to establish the space junk. Randomness...nothing but randomness. I really should have put more time into this one. My thought processes aren't on track.
Klinesmoker - So...you kick cats, eh? Tsk tsk tsk. I got my name from my wife because I'm kind of a trend follower with music, thus Trendy bitch.Yeah, med illus is a funny thing...I dig it though. Thanks! Re my lizards - yeah, I can totally see what you're saying, and you're not the first one to come forward and de-gumbify my creatures. I may have to dive back into them a bit more once the entire series is done. Looks like I'll have another 12 or so to go. Oy.
KC - That link just rocks it. Thanks! Made my day. I made some adjustments to the creature you mentioned, more than just the eye, but that was a significant diff as requested by Joel. Glad you like where things are going. I'll post new shite tomorrow.
Ben - Thanks. Yeah, it's heart wrenching to know that I need to spend more time on the wonky anatomy, but then there's that clock tickin' away at the mighty client's dolla dolla and I just gotta say "oops I did it again...."
Glad you like that nautiloid - was fun to do. Your guess is as good as mine on the spines. Fossils suggest the spines, but not the size or variability. I'm just injecting personal taste here and there for the sake of chaos and being natural. Who knows. Got some good creatures coming up - the cool thing is there are some awesome recreations and even movies from the bbc to help me flesh out the shape better.
Joel - no bro....you're SEXAY!
Super B - I thank thee. I see what tentacle you're ref'n, but I'm going to leave er as is. I'm showin' the underbelly and I'm pushing it to the back a bit cuz I'm lazy as all get out. Please forgive me.
Lots of love guys! Thanks for poppin' in here and giving me yer thoughts.
Cheers!

Here's the latest. Finally in the Triassic Period. It's based off of fossils (shell only) and one illustrative interpretation and tie in with octs and cuttlefish.
I'll also be doing a Cymbospondlylus and a Coelurosaur.

Oh maaan, the Diictodon's hair came out awesome.....I luv yer work m8
PS:The nautiloid's shell's spiral seems to have shifted out of its plane, might wanna take a look-see at it
dave, i know you are working quick my friend,
seems like there are some issues with the geometric-basic-volumes with the shell here....
will pm you what i mean...easier shown than told ... that said, i know you are VERY limited in time to complete these, that one is inspired by seeing them goes without saying and i am particularly enjoying this series immensely.
also, i would like your involvement / critique as i move forward with preparing a portfolio for montreal / medical illustration school preparation. will include more information about this in the PM foo.
j
Hey Charlie_2.0 - thanks! Can ya tell that I blow at spirals and perspective yet?I'll take a looksie at the nautiloid. Thanks again!!
Hey Joel - Ooh! Montreal! Damn fine institution. I'll do whatever I can to assist, bud.
Lookin' forward to your PM - yep...workin' fast, but I can always benefit from some tweakin'!
Cheers!

=D You're just popping these out today, eh? Great fun! I like the COW, very cute, and I expect it'll look more amusing with more rendering.
I have to say, I really like the ichythosaur - you've gotten a slick skin texture using b/w which I can't remember if you've always hit with the other monochrome critters. B/W is tough for some skin textures from what I've seen, and you nailed that guy.
The wip looks pretty good so far. I'm not sure if this matters, but in the end maybe push him up a little on the page? Just the lasso tool, right now I think his foot's a little close to your type, I had a vague impression you started drawing too close to the edge or that there was something wrong with the other foot, and I think isolating his invisible base from the text stuff might be beneficial. $0.02
Going up on the page, a quick kudos on the textures on the abdominal aortic aneurysm. It looks really nice, and I can say I just learned about the urinary and cardiovascular system in my anat. and physio class - a full two days before the exam. =O
Awesome stuff! =D
lovin' these dinos...I actually have the recent NatGeo poster of some icthyosaurs (and something else much much bigger) on my wall.
....but, I'm gonna have to bust your stones a bit now...
take a second look at the head of your 3-eye COW:
log some more time on the thumbnail rack and see if you can push it a bit further, maybe combine it with some of these prehistoric crustaceans?

ssssaaAAYY nice looking beasties man. My paleo-radar went off as I was passing by.
Really like the ammonoids, they look great. The Lycaenops too. The B&W rendering is well done. Jeez, I'd like to go deeper than that but it's been a long day.
If you need any reference materials or skeletal drawings I've got a whole bookcase full. Be happy to scan something in for ya, just say the word.
Keep up the good work. Paleo art is a lonely subject around here, it's always refreshing to see someone else's interpretation.

Remixed this one. My client failed to tell me that this one is his specialty and that the shell does indeed coil in one plane, not like a snail shell (which was how the previous one was). He also told me that the suture lines are only visible if you go into the shell proper. Sheeeit. Why don't the specialists convey this stuff prior to finding the material (fossils) to work from. Ugh.

My interpretation is loose - based off of literature, fossils and other representations much like yours. I'm no paleo artist and these represenations are artistic and not scientifically authenticated, but I'm trying.
Thanks for stoppin' in here!
