instead of merging try this( i started using it recently and it improve my speed)
just select( roughly) part of image, copy(ctrl+c), paste(ctrl+v) and what it does, it paste already merged entire information onto new layer
(assimilate to merging, but allows you to choose part of image you wanna edit instead merging entire image)
