Hey Dile those digi sketches look really familiar, very nice, now long did those take you?? Right now I'm talking to you on Skype so you pretty much already answered my question. great quick sketches, keep up the good work. I would agree with what the others have said about your the skull, but I know its a work in progress. Looking forward to seeing the update on the skull project.

i'm liking the headphones one. what's needed here is a bit more blending, and some exploration in depth and color. i'd suggest using airbrushes a bit more, rather then hard brushes with 30-40 % opacities (unless I'm mistaken of course).
you're showing lots of progress. keep it up.

p.s. some advice; never use a pure white pure black background. always use a dark, but yet not too dark to throw off your values. i'd suggest starting your paintings on a brown background, if it is going to be color. if not, then just a dark(er) bacground.if you were to take your painting with the wacom tablet with a whit ebg, and put in a darker bg, you would see what i'm talking about . i hope it helps. also, everything outside reflects the color of the sky somehow an dto osme extent. the sky is never purely whit as in one of your landscapes. . i hope the crits help in your next sp's

Hey Dile that environment painting is nice, I love how you keep mixing it up with environments and concepts. Keep up the variety. It will do you a whole lot of good in the end. I really need to do some environments my sketchbook is really lacking variety. I better get on that. Good work Dile see you later bud!!

Hey Dile! A few things about the last enviro.

    1. USE BIGGER BRUSHES! I know I do the same thing too, but it's a bad habit. Check out Idiot Apathy's sketchbook to see good big-brush stuff

    2. Boost that saturation! Check out The Peer Project thread for some awesome color exercizes.

    3. There's some white from the base layer showing through. Try to avod that by using bigger brushes orbumping up opacity.

Everything else is looking coo! Keep it up!

Whoaaa, crazy stuff with that lamp of yours, glad to here you're okay (and your sketchbook too). Looks like you've been working hard as always, on to yet another page O_O I really like the concept of the skeleton cowboy dude, although the top of the jaw is still looking strange to me - it seems very flat or almost concave, it need to maybe be more curved? Not sure if you're still working on that one.

great improvement, a SB that really worked.
All this will pay one day, so keep working hard just like you're doing now.The T Drome piece looks good, it's got some texture, the values are ok.But maybe i would have studied a bit more the human skull, the teeth look way too short. And i would have done the gun smoke on a different layer, so i could smudge it to give it a more realistic effect.Anywzy, really good work, nice improvement in these pages.Keep working, and posting!

    ciao

    Darktwin

Ok, Dile here is a front view of the 8 head method to measuring (for women it various a half a head smaller, depends on your drawing style) method I loosely use when roughing out a concept or anatomy study from memory. Now remember when measuring don't get to tight about it when measuring for porportions, don't want your drawings looking to stiff and rigid just to get everything measured right. Its just for structrual purposes. I just use it as a guide, as long as things look right to the eye or close when drawing loose conepts and such.

Since the sketch is a little off and to make clear, its roughly 1 head from the shoulder to elbow, and 1 head from elbow to wrist. The wrist to the tip of the fingers is about 3/4 or .75 th the length of the head.

From shoulder to shoulder its about the width of 3 heads (in red at the top).

this is just a method I use when drawing, its not perfect, and there are other methods out there. This is the one I like to use thus far, just thought I'd share. enjoy

    Yo Dile

Look carefulle at Darktwin's 8-heads post. This does vary from person to person, but a common rule is 7-8 heads in a body including the head. Sometimes 9.

On to crits: I say this to many people, and many people say this to me: avoid petting your line - use as little as possible, and have it say as much as possible. Not only your pencil drawings, but also your photoshops. Less is more, dude.

Then, your skull doesn't look like a skull yet. Add as little highlights as possible, and make your brushes work for you. A skull is hard and kinda rough/grainy. The texture on your skull seems a bit too rubbery. Again - use your brushes. Pay close attention to the features of a skull, and feel free to exaggerate these features - not too much, tough. Your eye also looks a bit dry - make it nice and shiny!

And this last drawing (post #347) the drawing of the woman needs some. Mentler explains the 3/4 factor very well, but in short: the light in your picture should either cover 3/4 of your subject, or the shadow should cover 3/4 of your subject. a 50/50 spread will have one's eye see the drawing and then bounce back, whereas working with 3/4 light 1/4 shadow or 3/4 shadow and 1/4 will enforce a focal point and retains one's eye.

You're making great progress here. Draw as much as you can, and keep these things in mind. Keep us updated!

    - d.

hmm interesting, I would say keep up what you're doing, but make sure you envision everything as basic geometric solids before you lay down the lines. Like in that wooden stool above, you hinted at a cube, but it should surround the entire thing before you even worry about curves. Then, imagine (or draw) a solid pyramid in the cube to understand the angles that the curved legs are at. They seem to be pointing inwards to a point way above, so draw out that as an aid.

The speakerphone shape is a short cone with the tip cut off. It's all about finding the vanishing points. It is definitely a good habit to think of everything as fitting inside a box, sphere, or what have you.
