The style of execution makes even a fiend seem rather beautiful. Detect certain Lovecraftian echoes.
Really enjoying this one, Tristan. I'm intruiged by the red spatter. Until I noticed it passed in front of the creature and sun I was reading it as distant stars but now my perception is jumping between several unresolvable possibilities, all of which is adding a subtle sensation of unease to an already creepy piece. Nice!
( Cool lineup indeed! I hope the show's a hit! )
The fact that the wings seem too small to lift its entire body and that its body seems too light for its head just adds to the eerie effect. I imagine it would continuously flap its ears to keep its head up while standing or walking, at least on our world.
I wish I could see this show!
Dumbo meets Lovecraft.... spooky indeed. Great stuff Elwell!
Pretty unsettling stuff! Beautifully executed. Sounds like an excellent line-up for the exhibition. It's just a shame I live over 5,000 miles away!
love the details on the muzzle and the smoothness of the rest of his body, makes the monster look .. you know, HUGE.
interesting concept. there are elements about it that don't really work though.
I like the the light around the edges, it isn't very exaggerated. And, how the wings connect to the head. For me, the problem is in the hands. They appear to have a zig-zag pattern, which to me looks weak. Maybe it's a matter of personal taste, but I'd prefer a single curve, flowing from the arms right down into the ends of the claws. I feel there's a stonger structure in a single curve.
Thanks for showing us Tristan!
I love that monster, it look like a mix between Re-animator 2 and cthulu. But the type and the background in the second pic make it hard to read.
Very nice! I wish I had half your skills. But could the shoulders of the Cthulu/Elephant do with a bit of a darker shade?
I mentioned this before to you, but this piece is so awesome. I LOVE this one. Such an incredible glow to it.
This piece is really impressive! Your creative juices were most definitely flowing when you thought this one up 8 D I am so glad you posted it!

Ya your a bad *ss w/ the brush dude!!!
Maybe you should stick to that!
As for your comments, well, I think your just jealous.
Ha...let's se what you have to say snarky about that one!
The press release for the show is up here.
Hexokinase--
The top-heavy feel was intentional. My concept was that this is a creature who never touches the ground; all the power is in the head and wings, and the body hangs down from them.
Matt--
The red is more a compositional device than anything else. In my initial sketch it was small flying creatures/insects, but I got rid of them as over-complicating the image. I still wanted the texture and shape to break up the symmetry, though. Any ambiguity is fine with me.
WODZGN--
My description was Ganesh meets Cthulu meets Dumbo meets a Portuguese Man O' War meets the Isenheim Altarpiece.
newman--
Probably.
Max Challie--
I've always been a fan of angular Nosferatu hands myself.
To everyone else, thanks to all for the kind words.

just gonna throw this up, those are great pics by the way, i checked these out and the first thing i thought when i saw the cats was that they're the same cat. they have the same pose but flipped, though it was the tail that got me. just sayin', the cats look like the same one. maybe try some different poses. just a thought.

A new Elwell! This is really nice man. The fumes look like they were done with colored pencil a little. But I like the scraggly quality to them.
I just noticed how you gave depth to the whirls with almost no value change and only using the opacity of the paint, nice!

Mannerism. Cool.
I am glad that I can say that I don't drink, I don't smoke and I don't swear.
Shit, I do drink and smoke.

Would love to see more of this stuff from you. Really loving the restraint and the simple power of design.

I really like the textures and colors of the background especially how the smoke and hair combine at the top of the page to create this nice, deep brown, earthy texture. She has a unique profile with the strong forehead and nose you gave her.
I don't really have anything to critique about it; probably wouldn't be my place to. But it's nice to see a new painting from you.

Get in line, pal!

No colored pencil, lots of spattering and solvent. I have a bunch of process shots I'll try to post up.
SouMeng-
Pretty much, although there was actually a bit of overpainting/manipulation towards the end.

Mannerism is cool, isn't it?

Thanks a lot, I'd love to do more. It's just a matter of fitting them in between the bread-and-butter work.
