    Sketchbook for jlward

    Hey everyone,

I wanted to get in on the sketchbook action. To start things off, I'm posting a couple of sketches I did a few weeks ago. These were just trying to get a feel for the characters and figure out a rough idea of what they looked like.

Good stuff, keep going! you should work more on shading though, that would really help to show the forms of the face, and therefore get more likeness.

Hey dude welcome aboard: Good start, did you use reference on those? as posted earlier, you might want to add more value to your shadow areas, because shadow areas are really important in shaping the form. If you haven't checked out loomis yet, you might want to do so here:

Okay, there seems to be a pretty strong concensus that I need to spend more time shading and finishing my sketches. That's actually why I wanted to start this sketchbook thing. I tend to be lazy in that once I have enough information to go on, I'll scan it and start painting on the computer.

I'm wanting to change that habit because I've come to realize that even though I save time doing sketches it always ends up causing me to spend more time painting resolving the very issues that should have been addressed during the concept sketch. So, please continue to call me out if you see me getting lazy.

Here's a couple of other sketches I dug up. These are a couple of years old. The Two Towers had just come out on DVD... I paused the movie and went to work.

    Here they are:

    Hi jlward!
You'r portrait look really nice, but work on the shading, give it some more mid tones so it looks more natural.
Thats's all i can say for now, you don't seem to have any other kindof probleme, just practice, and it'll come along

Hey. On the very first picture, try flipping your picture upside down and looking at it, or flipping it horizontally...

The Dwarf's beard isn't shaded like the rest of the picture, and Gandalf's teeth are just little rectangles, you might need to fill in the details on your own if the DVD doesnt show enough... Looks like you know what you're doing and that's fine though. Pretty good copies.

And the first picture, the problem is that both eyes aren't the same size and position, one's higher up. If you still don't see it, try covering one of his eyes and then covering the other eye to compare.Just checking if you see the problem yourself. Nice drawings though, I see subtle expressions in the first two. I won't be able to comment much about copied stuff though.

It looks like you know what to do, so that's good.

I did notice that on many of your sketches the "blacks" are actually light gray. Maybe you could make them darker while drawing? That will increase the contrast and make it look better. Or, maybe your scanner is set lighter than it should be, I know I have to fiddle around with the settings when I scan stuff, otherwise it turns out too white. Play around, see what happens.

some good likeness and really clean stuff man!!
looking forward to seeing more finished stuff.
on a side note- i noticed the 1st pic- the eyes look a bit uneven ones higher than the other. i think they should both be in the same perspective...just a small thing...

jlward - let that pencil dig in and leave some powerful lines. i think once you play with the weight and contrast of your lines, your work will pop. 8)
