nice post.... has it already been a year since the folk festival? I worked on the book/program guide for it last year... barf. I like the stuff you're doin, and don't worry bout feelin like a sterling rip... you got your own drawing thing going, and it's not as similar as you think.

    cheeeeers you artmacheen!

Andy - love the last bunch, and the bunch before. Especially when you kick around the paints or ink splatters. Sterling Hundley is definitely nice. On his site or blog he also has a link to George Pratts blog with some nice notes. Any way, kep up that stuff you're cranking out.

    cheers

I like all the updates, your musicians are still my favorites. I think your style is very "musical", that's something very cool. Hope to see more, soon Keep it up!

Wow your SB is amazing, I love your work. It's your very unique, but effective style that I like. I like the protraits at the beginning of your sketchbook and I liked how your style is very evident in both your paintings and linear work. Pardon me while I use this reply to lick butt, my idea of your work has moved into idol status haha. keep at it. Are you in any professional work at the mo involving your art?

Bojee- Yeah, that guy, Sterling, he good. Thanks for the compliments, too. Your output level is a big source of inspirado!
codomotron- Wow, that's cool that you did the folk festival program, was that something you got hooked up with at the paper? Actually, my friend Brian just got back from school in Switzerland and I think he's applying for your old job at the paper. Fun times ahead...
oalexis- Thanks, I love cheesesteak like nobody's bidness.
embee- Thanks, I love noses, too. Along with hands they can be some of the most fun things to draw. I need to break the habit of doing red noses before I get reliant upon them. But not any time soon though...
Listing- Word, a limited palette means a little less to worry about.
tensai- Oh yeah man, I had George's notes ground into my face for two years at VCU. George is one smart mofo, great teacher. Thanks for stoppin in!
GunTrouver- Thanka mucho, man. Yeah, like most people who sit around all day and draw, I listen to a lot of music. Wish I could just do gig posters for a living, that would be the shee-it!
vigostar- Wow, thanks duder. Most everything in here is from ref, the stuff in that last one was from ref I shot at a big Folk Festival in Richmond. Some of those dudes will probably pop back up in the book later on.
DoodleCath- Huh, my butt hasn't been licked in many moons, what a weird sensation. Anyway, many thanks for the compliments, glad you dig it. Right now I'm seriously trying to get a freelance career going, but I need a more coherent portfolio to shop around. So that's what I'm up to right now. Thanks again!
Asgardian- Actually my stuff looks better the groggier you are. So fresh eyes might be a bit disappointed . Thanks for poppin in!

Oh man, creepy, creepy, creepy. Found this site of Victorian-era photographs of people posing with recently deceased children/siblings. Apparently around the turn of the century it wasn't uncommon to take portraits with dead relatives shortly after they had died. Most of the photos looked like Mike Mignola wet dreams, wish I could remember how I found that site. Couldn't resist drawing a couple, but man oh man, creepo deluxe.

Got to see badass mandolin player Chris Thile this weekend. And since an old friend was doing lights at the show, my bro and I got to sit at the side of the stage, bout ten feet from the band. Huzzah for Brian!

Also, a good friend recently sent me an email handing me my ass about not having a career yet. What's keeping me back is the lack of a consistent portfolio, both quality and style wise. So I'm gonna try and build a new portfolio, pretty much from square one. I'm gonna take what I've enjoyed doing with my SB recently and try to apply it to more finished stuff.
Here's the first go round. No oils (a big change for me), pretty much just pen, FW acrylic inks, acrylic paint, and a wee bit o colored pencil. Felt good to work big again (22''x28'', hard to photograph well). This one might be a bit tighter than I'd like work, tho.
Yeah, I know, enough with the red noses, can't help myself.

Thanks everybody for checkin this junk out!

respect to that, and looking forward to the work. i don't know why you wouldn't consider stuff like this

    and this
    http://www.andyparrish.net/SB/FolkFestival.jpg
finished work though. or if not those two, at least that level of finish and roughness. i love that piece that you posted, but would try to watch out for getting to tight and letting go of that nice looseness your stuff has.

you probably know way better than i do what you're doing though...
    have fun

A portfolio full of work like that latest would be truely beastly! It seems much more controlled and clean than your current portfolio work, and has managed to retain that slick stylization. Nice colour choices too.

I agree with Tensai, a number of your SB pages would make legit portfolio pieces, I dont think that their supposed looseness detracts from anything.

(if you manage to remember or find a link back to those Death Portrait pages please hook us up, seems interesting)

great work in here, and the pages only get better and better. very inventive, and interesting with some of your characters, the way you draw people and their little habits. Intriguing work, I really enjoy looking at these.

Yeah man, the recently deceased photos are definitely creepy. I remember seeing a whole book of those at a library in San Diego.

The colors/composition on the last accordian piece are excellent.

    Happy Halloween, weiners!

    mentler- Gracias!
Ferg- To die for? But I don wanna die! I'm keeping my eye on you...
glikster- Thanks, though my crap is far from holy.
    oalexis- Thanks!
tensai- Ha, I don't know better about anything, it's all just stabs in the dark round here. I did get too tight on that new jam, probably because I hadn't worked that large in a while and I actually could get tight on stuff like the hand. I might consider those kinda pages to be finished pieces if I would take a little more care with composition and what not. Anywho, thanks for stoppin in, always appreciated.
sith- You don't know shit about anything? well, I guess that makes two of us. Thanks for poppin in, update you SB jams!
Djohnston- Thanks a lot, I seriously don't know how clean/tight the rest of my portfolio will end up being, I'll be as surprised as anyone. I tried remembering that site. I probably found it through metafilter, but can't recall. Sorry.
poise- Thanks, very cool to hear. Your SB is the bling, ya know.
max xiantu- Thanka mucho. I couldn't come up with anything nearly as creepy as those dead people for a halloween update.
Bojee- Word, still figuring out what I want junk and stuff to look like. Thanks for the encouragement!
s.s.nails- Thanks, color's a real beast, I used to be afraid of color like mofo. Somethin to just get over.
entdroid- Thanks, but yer way too modest. Congrats on the calendar!

Nothin particularly great. But, thar she blows (more like, yar this blows!).

    Nuts to finishing stuff.

Hey, there's now a sketchblog over on andyparrish.net that I'm gonna try and keep updated bout everyday. Hopefully. So there might be newer stuff on that junk sometimes.

Thanks for pointing your lookin balls in this here direction!

Is that a Jorge Garcia from Lost portrait in there that I see? That show rocks my long socks. How have ya been, Andy? It's always such a pleasure to cruise around in here. The last painting you posted is lookin' great. Maybe if you could make it a stronger light in the rear to really pop her forward even more. I really love it tho. You should be getting some Time Mag covers in no time, man. I do have one request... are we able to make requests? I wanna see some pencil work.. and I'm talkin' rendered stuff. Make it nice and tasty. Hope life is goin' well for ya. I'll be watchin'...

Well, the hare krishna is creepy. And so are the half-submerged model twins.

I'm not sure if you've seen the oils of Malcom T Liepke. I just saw them in the newest copy of American Artist, and they reminded me a bit your work. Nice expressive figures and faces.
